Nissan IMx Electric CUV Debuts With *373-Mile Range


The Nissan IMx is an all-electric crossover concept vehicle offering fully autonomous operation and a driving range of more than 600 kilometers.

The two electric motors push out a combined 430 horsepower and a beefy 516 lb-ft of torque.

The rumored Leaf-based electric SUV is finally here as Nissan has unveiled the IMx concept today on the dawn of the Tokyo Motor Show. Fan or not of the exterior design, there’s no denying the zero-emissions showcar has a bold appearance with suicide doors and an angular body featuring a fresh take on the corporate V-motion grille.

The floating front and rear fenders lend the concept a rather unique appearance and it also looks quite interesting when viewed from above thanks to a massive panoramic glass roof stretching from the front to back. The concept’s predominantly pearl white body is combined with a vermillion accent color and contrasted by the black pillars and roof.

Inside, it’s typical concept business as the four-seat IMx adopts a minimalist layout without any physical controls. An expansive OLED display serves as the instrument panel and sits above a wood grain-patterned display that extends onto the door panels. Nissan says it has used a 3D printer for the frame of the seats, which boast a laser-etched katanagare diagonal pattern and have a kumiki (Japanese interlocking wood puzzle) motif on the headrests.

As for power, the electric SUV is equipped with two electric motors that generate a combined output of 430 horsepower and a beefy 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque. Riding on Nissan’s latest EV platform, the IMx has a completely flat floor to enable a spacious interior and a low center of gravity that should help out with the handling.

The unspecified high-capacity battery pack has enough juice for a maximum range of more than 373 miles (600 kilometers)* between charges, so range anxiety shouldn’t be much of an issue considering an average gasoline-powered vehicle can cover roughly the same distance.

Editor’s Note: A word on the stated range.  As this debut is from Japan, this number is based on the JC08 standard…in other words its far too optimistic.  As a point of reference the new 2018 LEAF is rated at 400 km/248 miles on the same system, but in reality is rated for 150 miles/240 km.

In other words, this concept is likely powered by Nissan’s upcoming ~60 kWh battery, and has a real world range of some 225 miles/360 km…still pretty decent!

Much like other concept cars, the IMx features a highly advanced autonomous driving system that will handle all the work. When in ProPILOT drive mode, the steering wheel automatically hides inside the dashboard and the seats are all reclined to boost comfort while the SUV drives itself. Switch to manual mode and the steering wheels pops up and the seats revert to their original position.

While the IMx is billed purely a concept (much like the IDS Concept was to the updated 2018 LEAF), an all-electric SUV will be arriving from Nissan by 2019.   We imagine, if one deletes all the bells and whistles (like everything found in the interior and the funky doors), this is the basic shape and blueprint for that offering.

I was hoping for something closer to a production vehicle.

600 km on the Japanese testing cycle (JC08) is about 225 miles on the EPA testing cycle. Same range we expect for the 2019 60 kWh LEAF.

So was I.

In this market craze of CUVs, I don’t understand why the only electric SUV/CUV available today is the Model X. (I don’t count the RAV4 EV). I guess the I-Pace is on its way.

And you’re probably right about the EPA range. Unfortunately, this thing will cost at least $50k+ just as the Federal subsidy will expire for Nissan.

Why can’t someone produce a lightweight 200-HP electric CUV, instead of these 430-HP monsters? [A: Because the motors are cheap after you’ve already produced a heavy 60 kWH vehicle.]

Toyota’s RAV4 hybrid is outsold the Prius last month.

He’s talking abour RAV4 EV not Hybrid, a very rare species.

If you make it lightweight it will cost even more. If you reduce motor power by a factor of two you maybe save around 500$. I don’t know if that’s worth it.

with the size of that concept and the large motors….they will be lucky to get 175-200 miles of range with a 60 kWh battery.

Hmmmm….”Nissan IMx”, does that name pronounce “Eye Em Ex”, or is it “El Em Ex”?

If it is Eye Em Ex, is it a play on words: “Intelligent Model X”? Or if it is El Em Ex, is it another play – “Little Model X”?

After that, since It is a “four-seat IMx”, it seems, “Little Model X” is closer to the mark, and might be Smaller than Tesla’s Model Y, expected to be at least 5 seats!

Next, can it Tow, and what will its Tow Rating be? Inquiring Minds ‘Just Got Ta Know!’

Their next EV concept will be the Rx. It’s a prescription for gasoline addiction.

IF it’s the BMW REX solution, than bring it on, cause it’s only on .1% of the time. And for rural drivers, it’s really the only option.

Well, in Europe Nissan’s compact SUV (as the propossed IMx), called ‘Qashqai’ is selling very well, and – IMHO – looks very good. If the “series” IMx will be similar, it will also sell in large numbers.

Agreed. Especially compared to that Z-esque concept Honda just released. That thing is hot.

Totally agree. Although it is mostly the japanese automakers. I have to really try hard to find a Toyota or Lexus design that I don’t think is completely idiotic looking.

Lexus in particular. They all look like they’re seriously pissed and about to devour you.

I agree Wade – Lexus has gone off the deep end on their designs. Nothing says “not green” like a monstrous front grille.

I could see an electric version of a Rogue-sized AWD EV replacing my CMax Energi one day. Lucky for me, the CMax should last another decade. Because that’s how long I may have to wait.

You should know by now that I hope to only buy electrics from here on out. The question is how often. My wife and I each have a car, and I’m talking about replacing her PHEV with a full-electric. Notice that I mentioned that I hope it’s a full decade from now!

I would take this over most current offerings. Like the HP. Dual motor Nismo LEAF anyone??

It looks like the NISMO leaf will use one of these motors, so 160kW (213 bhp)

Can’t they say the precise size of their battery ? Instead of playing arrounf with Kilometers and Miles of Range that we all know are meaningless ?

Uhhhh.. All my excitement for this vehicle just went out the window. I was hoping it was something nearly production ready. Not this fantasy that will never see the light of day.

300 mile range is excellent and I am sure the Taxis and others who drive a lot will jump in and buy. Design is fantastic and I guess they borrowed some from the Mitsu e-Evolution. Go forward Nissan.

I thought this was based on the same platform as the latest LEAF.

If that is the case, I think it will look more normal when it is due for production.
They have to think about cost, and ease of production. The doors will not work on the current LEAF platform, so they will be normal.

I’m sure it will be more powerfull then the current LEAF, but how much more.. at least not like the prototype. Even though many would love the power (just like people are impressed with the Tesla acceleration).

I would have thought that they would rush to get this into volume production due to the demand for a CUV.

Strange it’s not a more ready for production prototype they are showing.
Unless this is going to be based on a new LEAF platform.

Nissan needs to Hire some designers from Mazda, even for a prototype that is far fetched.
