Mitsubishi is introducing for Europe its updated Outlander PHEV for 2017.

The Outlander PHEV is already one of the most popular plug-in hybrid vehicles in the world (unless you reside in America where the Outlander PHEV has been delayed 7 times), and the most popular plug-in model for Europe in 2016 with over 20,000 sales.  The electric Mitsu has also logged 26,000 sales to date (by the end of 2016) in the UK alone.

In 2017, Mitsubishi says it has “extensively revised” the utility vehicle by introducing some new features, performance additions, and wait for it … improving the all-electric range by one more mile!

  • all-electric range increases from up to 32 miles to 33 miles (53 km) via its 12 kWh battery (NEDC rating -think about ~22-23 miles (35-37 km) real world/EPA equivalent
  • a new EV priority mode is actuated by a new switch to allows the driver to operate the vehicle in EV mode – without the engine starting (provided of course that the battery is charged enough to power the motor). This feature will extend the non-engine operation to more situations compared with the traditional modes.
  • performance:  0-62mph (100 km/h) in 11 seconds, up to 244lb/ft of torque
  • towing capacity is ample at 1,500kg
  • improved regenerative braking – steering wheel paddles to better adjust regeneration
  • the drive battery output has been improved by 10% (thus keeping the Outlander PHEV in all-electric mode more often – and adding more capably)
  • faster DC CHAdeMO charging to 80% (in 25 minutes instead 30 minutes)
  • new Cool Silver color option
  • CO2 emissions have also been lowered by 1g/km to 41g/km, with an average weighted fuel consumption of 166 mpg – a 6.4% increase versus the previous version
  • Safety features have also been further developed and improved on the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Forward Collision Mitigation technology, standard on the Mitsubishi Outlander 4hs and 5hs versions, now features for Pedestrian Detection for added safety, while Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert have both been introduced on the 4h variant to assist the driver when reversing out of a space. For example, if traffic is coming from the right, the icon located on the right-hand mirror will light up, accompanied by an audio alert.

For 2017 Mitsubishi introduces a new EV Priority Mode across all variants. The new EV switch is located below the 4WD button and once activated, it allows the driver to operate the vehicle in EV mode without the engine starting, provided there is sufficient charge in the batteries. An electronic parking brake is also new to the 2017 Outlander PHEV, as well as the brake auto hold button function which, when activated, holds the vehicle in traffic or on an include the same way a handbrake would, allowing the driver to release the footbrake.


Across all variants, the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV powertrain and chassis has been revised, with new dampers and rear suspension bushes, making it a quieter and more refined to drive than ever. Rapid charging has also been improved, reducing its charging time to 80% from 30 minutes to approximately 25 minutes, and its pure electric range is increased to 33 miles, up from 32 miles. The 2017 Outlander PHEV also delivers more performance with improved acceleration in EV mode compared to its predecessor. CO2 emissions have also been lowered by 1g/km to 41g/km, with an average weighted fuel consumption of 166 mpg – a 6.4% increase versus the previous version. Regenerative braking technology, which works to put lost energy back into the battery when slowing down and which can adjusted while driving using the steering wheel paddles, has also been upgraded for 2017 Outlander PHEV – the drive battery output has been improved by 10%.

Safety features have also been further developed and improved on the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Forward Collision Mitigation technology, standard on the Mitsubishi Outlander 4hs and 5hs versions, now features Pedestrian Detection for added safety, while Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert have both been introduced on the 4h variant to assist the driver when reversing out of a space. For example, if traffic is coming from the right, the icon located on the right-hand mirror will light up, accompanied by an audio alert.

Another colour has been added to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV colour palette in the form of Cool Silver. A shark-fin antenna is now incorporated in the roof line and there is a secure charge-point cover linked to the central locking. For a more refined exterior look, Outlander PHEV also features silver roof rails, as well as clean chrome accents on the sills.

Inside, the new Electronic Parking Brake and auto-hold button are located to the right of the 4WD and the new EV Priority Mode switches on the centre console. The console, and other key surfaces, have been finished with a black ash design and chrome accents and, as before, it is extremely well finished with soft-touch switches and ambient lighting flooding the floor area and centre console box. A four-spoke heated steering wheel, with a thick high-grip rim, fine leather trim and multiple control switches, completes the upmarket cabin feel.

EV Drive Mode is an all-electric function in which the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electricity from the drive battery. With zero on-road petrol consumption and zero CO2 emissions the driver can enjoy a quiet and very eco-friendly performance for up to 33 miles, subject to weather conditions, driving style and the usage of the car’s electrical and climate control systems.


In Series Hybrid Mode the petrol engine operates as a generator supplying electricity to the electric motors. The system switches to this mode when the remaining charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level and when more power is required, such as accelerating to pass a vehicle or climbing a steep gradient.


The system switches to Parallel Hybrid Mode when the vehicle reaches high speeds. In this mode, the high-efficiency petrol engine provides most of the motive power, which is then assisted by the electric motors as required; such as when more powerful performance is needed to accelerate or climb a slope.


Externally, the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 3h is fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels and LED DRLs with headlamp washers as standard and in terms of comfort and convenience it feaures a long list of standard equipment including a touchscreen Display Audio system with DAB and Bluetooth, Rear View Camera, an Electronic Parking Brake with Brake Auto Hold and the new EV Switch. Steering wheel paddles, for adjusting the level of regenerative braking, are also standard, as is dual-zone climate control; automatic lights and wipers; cruise control and speed limiter; rear view mirror with auto dimming and electrically retractable door mirrors.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 4h builds on the high specification of the 3h with the addition of LED front fog lamps, Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. A 360 degree camera function (displayed on the infotainment system display) which can be activate via a steering-wheel button is also standard, while the 4h version also features leather upholstery with heated front seats and electric driver’s side adjustment; Mitsubishi’s MMCS touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation; a power operated tailgate and a heated steering wheel.

Forget 33 mile Electric only, I get just over 20 in winter and around 25 ish summer months which is still pretty good !

Humor me, please: why did you buy this car ? What are the advantages of owning it and, if you don’t mind sharing, in which country is that ?

I leased it for 3 years here in the UK,

Had it for 20 months, it equates to 107 mpg in electric only mode (due to high cost of fuel here),

I am averaging 93 mpg less electric costs which brings it down to just over 70 mpg.

I have done over 15k miles so far with 80% of miles in EV only.

It’s great to drive, fits a lot of stuff in when the back seats are folded down.

It’s not surprising it has sold very well in Europe given fuel costs and it is even better for company car drivers with only 7% (was 5% until last year) benefit in kind tax wise.

I didn’t get the feeling of it being that great of a car from online reviews like these:

i have one, love it, Ev smooth… and considering 90% of my driving is in EV only, even with “just” 20 or so miles of range. total fuel use for me for the past 12 months has been 82Mpg. what other 5 seat SUV will do that?

In the interests of balance we’ve owned our Outlander PHEV for 2 years and we love it! It’s our go to car which is saying something given we also have the choice of an e46 M3, e28 M5, Alfa GTV V6 and an S3 when we leave the house.
The PHEV is so incredibly refined, practical and economical to run esp. as we power it with dolar panels.
And as The engine barely runs.. And we only need to put petrol in every 3-4 months or so.

What’s your experience?

I’m from Down Under and have had the PHEV 2014 for 3 years. Would never go back to oil burner only. I use about 30lt/mth in fuel. Have solar panels and home and work, so charge most of the time from the big nuclear power plant in the sky. 90% EV driving, 10% fuel. Never have range anxiety and drags of almost every thing at the lights if I feel so inclined. Just clicked over 75,000km on the same tyres. Never changed the brake pads as they almost never get used with the regen braking. Absolute rocket to drive. No gear changes, super quiet. Can sneak up on pedestrians and bump them over if you are bored. It is the future. I don’t know how Mitsubishi got it so right first time. I’m to eratic to go pure EV just yet and Australia has some long roads with no power points along the way. The CV drive on the engine is a mystery to me as to how it works? Very clever engineers those asian dudes from up north. About to upgrade to the 2017 just because it makes business sense. If you can afford one, highly recommend it.

So did it get cheaper, more expensive, or did the price stay the same? £34,749 in GB is as relevant to me, as the current Big-Mac prices in Singapore.

But what o am really curious about – why was the reason for US delay, was it regulations or was it lack of supply to fulfill anticipated demand ?

And how is a trump administration that reduces regulation in general but may try to regulate foreign companies more going to affect that ?

I guess it depends on what wacky tariff system Trump wants to implement. If all cars not manufactured in US get a 35% tax then we won’t ever see it. Say goodbye to the i3 and i8 or any other German EV for that matter.


Likewise other countries will apply a similar tariff and rules for domestic manufacturing in response so GM, Ford, Tesla, etc. won’t be able to sell their cars anywhere but North America unless they have a domestic factory in every single country where they want to sell.

For example Germany would likely retaliate and impose a 35% tax on Tesla. This certainly won’t help them since they are still at a very sensitive stage of growth.

Early 20th century or 3rd world protectionist economic policies like this will kill innovation and still won’t save jobs because a lot of low level manufacturing is switching more and more to automation that doesn’t require even low cost labor.

Maybe Trump starts his Tariff Wack on ICE Vehicles first, and recommends those Companies that bring BEV’s and PHEV’s to America, to start making their BEV’s & PHEV’s in America, or by 2019 they will face the same Tariff on them! (That will Give Tesla a Solid ground to be operating on by then as well!)

It cracks me up that this is known as “the chicken tax” for historical reasons.

It is basically a huge protectionist advantage that the USA has given to the USA automakers. But go ahead and try to explain that to Trumpkins. They’ll just tell you that China and Mexico are the bad guys.

The vast majority of plug in cars sold in the US are American made. Of the top 6 only the Leaf is a foreign builder, and it is built in TN.

The i3 is 7th in US sales and seeing it disappear would be a disappointment but it wouldn’t be HUGE! Just 7625 i3’s were sold last year, a bit better than half the number of Leaf’s, which is the 5th best selling plug in car in the US. (C-Max was 6th with 7900 sold)

My takeaway on this is that Tesla, GM and Ford seem to be delivering decent products at a price acceptable for their level of quality/desirability.

BMW/Fiat/Audi/VW are kind of dragging in so-so products at a price point most car buyers find to be a bit too high.

Toyota may be late to the game but I would bet their yearly sales will be in the top 5 at the end of this year.
Now if the FFEnergi would get at least 30 miles of AER next year…

You guys need to sort out reality – the 35% tax is on US car makers that build their cars outside the US. As of other countries Trump is asking for a level playing field – our taxes will equal theirs. As for the 25% on trucks, yes that was protectionism – but that had nothing to do with EU and their 7.5% higher car tax than we charge them – they were cited together so I expect the point was to show we were charging them more than they were charging us – which is not true.

So foreign carmakers are allowed to build cars outside the USA but ‘domestic’ car companies cannot. Wouldn’t that become an unfair playing field for the domestics?

I also doubt that Mitsubishi will keep selling the Outlander cheaper and cheaper, just because the currency rates drop. They are still a Japanese company, if the pound drops 50% of its value, they will adjust their vehicles pricing.

Both but mostly the batteries. Previous iteration had I believe some safety build differences that didn’t justify the cost to bring until the redesign. But the big issue is they have supply shortages. Mitsubishi was able to get more supply of batteries into the pipeline last year but it’s still the case that the vehicle is in high demand in Europe and given the limited supply they feel they are better off selling it there at good margins and establishing market share rather than trying to compete here.

Eh, you do realise that if the pound weakens, then anything imported (like Mitsu’s) will be *more* expensive, not less.

So did the range really improve? Or did they just find a different way to test it?

i have the 2017 model 4h my best across london is 30 miles in electric,average 26 to 28 depending on temperature on long run through france 90 mph averages about 28 mpg no charging

GM could drop the existing Voltec system into the 2018 Equinox and get far more range and probably better acceleration.

Yea, GM definitely needs to spread the Voltec around more into different cars. Malibu would be a good choice too.

But apparently all you need to do to get 0-60 performance in the high 8’s is to buy a black Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Black is faster.

I don’t know why real world test results vary so much, but I’ve seen times in the 8’s, 9’s, and low 10’s for this car. I don’t know why the results are so different.

It seems to me the Malibu already has the Voltec Drive Train, just not much battery, and is just a straight Hybrid, not a PHEV or EREV!

If the finished expanding the Malibu to a EREV, it would be an interesting comparison to the Volt! Bigger Car, more head room, etc!


The lack of an SUV, minivan, or pick-up Voltec vehicle is also very suspicious.

Perhaps they got scared off because the ELR was a bomb. But I still think that all these automakers are just trying to milks high-margin ICE SUV & truck sales for as long as possible.

Yeah Nix, GM really SHOULD migrate their outstanding Voltec system into CUVs, SUVs, midsize cars, even trucks.

Unfortunately however, they would rather work with Voldemort to abolish CAFE standards and other “onerous” regulations like CARB so they can sell more profitable 15mpg trucks and SUVs for Americans to commute as single passengers to their desk jobs in!

And GM is actually far better then the other 2 of the Big 3 in at least preparing for the inevitable future.

The fact is that none of the laggard legacy OEMs will do much until forced to do so by either the Government (going in the wrong direction now) or by the eventual relentless pressure by true innovators like Tesla or possibly other start-up EV makers.

Yeah, buying any product from GM will help them fund their lawyer goons efforts to thwart CARB efforts and be able to sell their OPEC swallowing guzzlers.

I have outlander now 110k tows trailer for about 80k of that great machine but overdue for a REAL upgrade not slight improvement

Any mentions of what the SUV gets for MPG when it runs as a hybrid mode. What if the battery is depleted and you drive at highway for a bit or city? Can we get the numbers for the gas engine? When you have lower range EV the odds of driving in hybrid mode are much more likely, so I am curious how efficient it is.

The Mitsubishi car and SUV look great but when you guys going to show the commercial are the Mitsubishi?

Surely everybody already knows that Mitsubishi is de facto non existent in the USA because of poor sales of their very old designs that haven’t changed since the 90s incl the Outlander. The Lancer was discontinued & the tiny MiEV only sold a couple hundred in 5yrs so there was nothing else to sell by Mitsu. Its now wholly owned by Nissan-Renault & bossman Ghosn has big plans for NRM in bringing out Mitsu PHEVs for the entire range which we all like to see happen. The Outlander PHEV is a big seller in Europe so its only a matter of time for the Outlander PHEV release in the USA.

But this Outlander is a no-brainer hit! It could easily sell here. It is not a mystery as to why they don’t try to sell the POPULAR car.
