Electric cars are known for their instant torque and seamless acceleration, but these models are certainly a step above the rest.

Time and time again we hear about Tesla vehicles’ incredible acceleration. In fact, the Model S P100D is arguably the quickest production vehicle to date (although the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon claims to be quicker) and the Model X is surely no slouch (Jeep previously called its new Trackhawk the world’s quickest SUV). Additionally, the Model 3 has been shown to hold its own against some pretty tough competition.

Some will argue that the zero-to-60-mph metric isn’t important. This is especially true if you talk to ICE lovers that are discounting electric vehicles or people that are trying to discredit Tesla. However, it’s important to note that it’s the only speed metric the average driver gets to experience in everyday driving and it can prove highly advantageous.

While top speed is a stat to tout, unless you’re breaking the law or taking your car to the races (or you travel regularly on the Autobahn), it’s rarely something that you’ll use.

No other pure electric cars can pull off the zero-to-60-mph sprint quite like those of the Silicon Valley automaker’s flagships. However, there are a handful of other plug-ins (some of the plug-in hybrid variety) that pack plenty of giddyup. While Tesla’s vehicles won’t impress everyone when it comes to top-end power or top speed, some cars on this list are plenty capable in other areas.

Black Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid

6 (tie): Cadillac CT6 PHEV – 5.2 seconds

The 335-horsepower Cadillac CT6 Plug-in will deliver you to 60 mph in a mere 5.2 seconds. It boasts a top speed of 152 mph.


Black Mercedes-Benz S550e

6 (tie): Mercedes-Benz S550e – 5.2 seconds

The Mercedes-Benz S550e (plug-in hybrid) ties with the Cadillac, with a 5.2-second zero-to-60-mph time. It packs 436 horsepower and tops out at 130 mph.


Black Tesla Model 3

5 (tie): Tesla Model 3 – 5.1 seconds

According to Tesla, the Model 3 (in its current Long Range configuration) achieves a zero-to-60-mph sprint in 5.1 seconds. Though it’s been recorded at 4.66 seconds. Getting exact horsepower and torque ratings for pure electric cars using traditional methods (dyno) is inconsistent. Two recent dyno tests of the Long Range Model 3 conflict, with numbers as low as 280 and as high as ~394. Top speed is 140 mph.

5 (tie): BMW 740e – 5.1 seconds

The BMW 740e (plug-in hybrid) matches the Model 3’s 5.1-second metric. It’s good for a total of 322 horsepower and will take you to 130 mph.


BMW i8 Frozen Black Edition

4: BMW i8 – 4.2 seconds

The BMW i8 Coupe hits 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, according to the manufacturer. Similarly, the new 2019 Roadster variant will take you to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, due to the fact that it’s a bit heavier (132 lbs. to be exact). Both put out 374 horsepower and achieve a top speed of 155 mph.



3: Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid – 3.2 seconds

The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (the fastest model in the E-Hybrid family) blazes from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Additionally, it delivers an impressive 680 horsepower and boasts an incredible top speed of 192 mph.

Even the new 462-horsepower 4 E-Hybrid model pulls off a 4.4-second stat and tops out at 172 mph. Especially relevant is the fact that it’s a whopping $84,400 cheaper than its Turbo S sibling!


Black Tesla Model X

2: Tesla Model X – 2.9 seconds

The Tesla Model X P100D with Ludicrous mode will zip you to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, making it the quickest SUV in production. In addition, it has a top speed of 155 mph.

In its least expensive configuration (Model X 75D), it delivers a 4.9-second zero-to-60-mph time.

1: Tesla Model S – 2.5 seconds

It comes as no surprise that the Tesla Model S P100D tops this list. According to the automaker, it hits 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and with the Ludicrous+ update (which is also available on the Model X) it’s even quicker. Also, it has a top speed of 155 mph.

The “slowest” Model S 75D goes from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds.



If zero-to-60-mph bragging rights are a high priority, then perhaps one of these eight plug-in electric cars will be the right choice for you.

Any of these cars is quick enough off the line for everyday driving. How about giving us something more important and that is passing speed, say 50-80mph for each car for those times you are stuck behind a slow moving truck and several cars and need to quickly get past them all.

PHEV = disgusting gas car

If it doesn’t have 40 miles of range it shouldn’t be on anybody’s list.

However, cars like the Volt is really the optimal car for most of America, now and the next 5 years. Most states don’t have the California, Oregon, Washington State highway charging network, or the California – Los Vegas run.

Lol, the volt will burn gas when the gas gets stale or when it’s really cold.

And any non-Volt electric car owner will need to rent a gas rental car if they are planning to roadtrip anywhere off the main interstates.
There is a place for the Volt for the next 5 to 10 years. And given how battery packs react to extreme cold, that 5 to 10 years may be a good bit longer in the northern states.

Purists have lost sight of what why transposition revolution was needed in the first place. It’s become a religion. In fact, a Prius Prime would be more environmentally friendly choice for at least half of Americans compared to a Model X (educated guess; you can check the numbers on fuel economy.gov). But it’s constantly villified on these threads.

be interesting to see the results if the gas engines were not allowed to run during tests on the PHEVs. The Volt and BMW i3 Rex would be the only PHEVs to hold their ground.

What is remarkable is the big heavy 740e is in the top 5 with a small 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine. BMW does some remarkable engineering. They had a luxury PHEV compare, and the BMW had the only 4 cylinder and average 10mpg better than the competition, yet was quickest. https://i.imgur.com/mwWf5o3.jpg BMW is very conservative in their HP ratings. How is it the Model 3 with similar rated HP and much lighter is the same quickness?? This is the same size engine in a 330e which is highly detuned. Can you imagine if BMW decided to put this in the smaller lighter 330e? The car would be very quick. But perhaps would cannibalize from the 340i sales? Also, BMW builds the quickest of the ICE Sports Sedans. In the current April 2018 Road & Track issue, they tested the M5 at 2.8 sec 0-60, and 10.9 in the quarter mile at 127.1 mph (some tests show 129 mph). Can’t imagine how quick the M5 would be with hybrid assist. But the extra weight would probably keep it from killing a car like the Tesla on any kind of road course, in which now the M5 will run many laps after… Read more »

It seems to me the Cadillac CT6 PHEV is more impressive as it gets twice the electric only range as the BMW and also uses a 2L turbo 4. Same 0-60 and power as well. I agree the BMW is impressive based on it’s weight but that just makes the cadillac even more impressive for keeping the weight off with a larger batt pack. I believe the BMW is slightly larger however.

Are any of these contenders’ 0-60 mph times on electric drive only?

Being an almost purist, these barely electric PHEV’s hold zero interest to me. I drive a Volt, it was the first (and only really acceptable) PHEV that has almost served it’s useful purpose- to get us to pure electric viability, which we’ve just about reached.

Yet these high end manufacturers continue to go backwards in electric range (14-20 miles, yawn), and somehow end up in the same conversation of Tesla’s and Bolts..

@Steven Loveday: I hate to say it, but someone knock GM and Mercedes off this list entirely, Jaguar has the 0-60 of 4.5-ish seconds in their GM Bolt competitor, the iPace. This means there’s no points for seventh place.

I agree, and every few months, as new models arrive, we’ll update these LISTS to reflect that. However, at this point, the iPace just debuted. So, look for new renditions of our “Top Lists” every so often to account for new models, trims, and redesigns. Thank you!

The iPace is Tesla Competitor not a Bolt Competitor.

Sometimes mistakes are deliberate.

Tesla does not have a small crossover yet, but the GM Bolt is a small crossover, like the iPace. Which is more of a mistake, positioning a small crossover against another one, regardless of price, or positioning a mid-sized, premium sedan against a small crossover that is not a luxury vehicle, because the premium sedan is less expensive than the crossover by $2500?
At some point this year, I expect the Tesla Model Y to debut. It will be the same size as the Bolt and the iPace. It will price a little above the Model III, perhaps $3000. – $5000. more. It will compete with the iPace on performance and premium aspects and compete with the Bolt on price.

Correct and the Bolt isn’t a crossover even though Stupid GM called it one. Small jacked-up car with a roof rack isn’t a crossover lol.

My Volt’s quickest 0-30 was in 2.5 seconds

Speed limits are 45 and 50 in the cities around me so I’m ahead of everyone to the speed limit with literally no chance unless it’s one of these guys but then they have to punch it as well and most people dont punch it at the millisecond when the red light turns green.

you forgot to mention the Porsche 918 Spyder with its rated 0-62 time of 2.6 seconds [1] and motortrend-tested 0-60 time of 2.4 seconds.

But assuming you just wanted to have a Tesla on top of your list, you forgot to mention that supercars don’t count, or that they have to be still manufactured or something.

Very good point! It’s not in our Compare EVs nor is it on our list since it’s a very limited production vehicle like the Ferrari LaFerrari and other similar high-end supercars. It also hasn’t been produced since 2015 and is essentially unavailable. They only made 918 of them and it cost well over a million. We could have included that and the Ferrari, as well as McLarens and Nio and Koenigsegg, but that’s really a whole different ballgame. Perhaps in the future, we can do a separate ranking for those cars. In the meantime, we will try to put even more disclaimers and be abundantly clear as to exactly what the list will comprise. At some point, the lists just become too ridiculous and involved with so many explanations, qualifications, disclaimers, etc. They’re meant to be fun and informative without going way overboard. I’d take the CT6, for its electric mode. Best all-purpose EV, when you want it.

I think the Mercedes and Cadillac would be kicked off the list… not sure how they got on a “fastest 0-60” list anyway huh? Perhaps you could roll your D20 dice again and get a random number bigger than 8 for your list.

Pretty sure Volvo XC90 T8 is missing with a blistering 5 second 0-60 on an SUV!

That’s exactly what I was going to say, they missed the only 7 seater PHEV SUV that does 0-60 in 5 seconds flat (C&D)! I know because I own one 😉 Love it especially the fuel economy and the instant power!

I did some research and the manufacturer says 5.3. Other tests do show 5 seconds. However, we used manufacturer estimates for all of the others, so that’s why it didn’t make the list. It looks like the XC 60 may be even faster and could have made the list, but numbers are inconsistent. We will be updating these posts with new models and new information periodically. Thanks again!

Yep. You got that right. I missed it during the redesign when we didn’t have that spec posted. When we do the next update to these lists and convert them to slideshows, the XC60 T8 will have a new home on this list. Thank you very much!

If they are using gas, then it shouldn’t count.

Those PHEV should only count if their “EV only” mode is that fast!!!

This is outdated or intentionally missing certain vehicles.
You forgot the Tesla Model 3 AWD with a 4.5 seconds and the Model 3 Performance of 3.5 seconds.
Not to mention the new roadster (even though not yet released) with a 1.9 seconds 0 to 60
