Renault’s Lineup Of Pure Electric Cars – Fluence Z.E., Twizy, Kangoo Z.E. and ZOE

One of our readers inspired us to dig for some more data and create one more graph illustrating sales of the four all-electric Renault models.

As it turns out, according to the manufacturer’s preliminary data (possibly inaccurate by a few hundred units one way or the other), total Renault electric car sales already exceed 48,000 units.

Almost all of those cars (46,500) were delivered in Europe.

Cumulative sales of different models, besides Fluence Z.E., is aligned at approximately 30% between Kangoo Z.E., ZOE and Twizy.

This year, maybe even in October, Renault will hit the 50,000-unit mark. For Europe, this is probably the highest number among manufacturers, however 14,000 Twizys aren’t full size cars.

The other carmaker that recently exceeded the mark of 50,000 produced cars is Tesla Motors, which probably already hit (or soon will) 50,000 deliveries (including Tesla Roadster).

Sales for Renault could have been much better but………………

Renault got sucked into the Better Place deal and actually ended up crushing a number of nearly new Fluence. (ouch!)

The Zoe is a cute car, but the battery leasing controversy plus home charging problems shackled it from the start.

Twizzy is as cute as a bug (and actually looks like a bug) It’s a recreational vehicle basically, with limited over all appeal.

The Kangoo is sort of like a car, and quite a bit like a van. Good concept but not everyone wants that van look. So, it has limited appeal and sales.

Still, it’s not too bad a start for Renault. After a few tactical errors at the beginning, Renault should do better going forward.

The Nissan half of Nissan-Renault seems to have gotten it right from the very beginning.

The Nissan half of the alliance did NOT get it right. Introducing a car that was almost universally panned as ugly is not getting it right…

The fact that it is selling pretty well despite its appearance is testament to the size of the market they both could have established clear dominance over.

The errors made by Renault/Nissan are giving VW a really good chance to grab a significant share of the market, now that R/N has done the difficult job of introducing the public to mass market EVs. Renault and Nissan could have owned this market fully, if not for Renault being weird and Nissan choosing such quirky styling.

The Fluence lacks a good charger like Zoe, better batteries (for range and durability) and a usable trunk. Betterplace has little to do with its downfall. The Kangoo is for companys and little buisnesses – plumbers love it. Aside from that, you are absolutely right.

Like you said Nissan and Renault should have the lion’s share of the EV market. Still, the combined total of Nissan-Renault cars sold stands at a solid 200,000.

On the other hand, we always knew that whenever the Germans entered the EV market, that all their faithful “Farfegnugen” groupies would rush out to buy VW and other German brands.

Every car company has its fans and groupies but especially BMW. I really don’t see anything that Nissan-Renault could have done to keep the lid on the Germans.

does this include the Renault SM3 EV ?

I don’t know anything about the home charging problems unless you are referring to the around 5 early deliveries that were incompatible with an earlier generation of the ChargerMaster charger (and all fixed foc). I do think the battery lease option has hampered business sales of the Zoe but I should point out that last year Nissan *introduced* battery lease options on the Leaf so I don’t think it was such a bad idea. Personally with the miles I do in my Zoe I’m happy for the lease.
