It doesn’t really come as much of a surprise that the Tesla Roadster dominated the Tesla Semi at the semi’s own event, but let’s have a look at some interesting data.

C’mon, we’re talking about a gorgeous red sports car that will break all records if it comes to fruition, versus a big electric truck that is industry specific. We wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla ran the event this way on purpose. With all the negative Model 3 production press lately, added to the automaker’s financial fallout from the situation, a truck geared toward a limited, corporate audience wasn’t likely enough to woo the world.

As reported by Electrek, engaged online content marketing group, Fresh Mechanism, to crunch some numbers. Fresh Mechanism uses geotagged Twitter data to compile and organize audience information.

Needless to say, the data revealed that the global social media response toward the Roadster made the Semi announcement appear almost non-existent.

Fresh Mechanism was also able to break down Tweets from each U.S. state using its geotagging technology. Of course, California dominated in Tesla-related Tweets, followed by states like Washington, Nevada, and Oregon. Somewhat surprisingly, Illinois fared very well on the list. Electrek reported that:

“as much as 5.2% of all geotagged tweets from California were about Tesla from October 18th to November 18th.”

The top ten states are listed below:

California at 5.2% with 244,200 Tesla tweets
Washington at 5.1% with 33,600 Tesla tweets
Illinois at 5% with 53,700 Tesla tweets
Nevada at 4.8% with 22,500 Tesla tweets
Oregon at 4.6% with 15,300 Tesla tweets
Utah at 4.5% with 9,300 Tesla tweets
Arizona at 4.5% with 25,200 Tesla tweets
New York at 4.3% with 104,400 Tesla tweets
Wyoming at 4.2% with 1,380 Tesla tweets
Colorado at 4.1% with 16,800 Tesla tweets

So, by this geotagging analysis, 500 “looky-loo” non-buyers on twitter are more important than a fleet buyer from J.B. Hunt, Schneider, or FedEx, and they’re more important than some analyst from OOIDA sitting quietly back in row 3. Got it.

Well, the analysis at least shows that people don’t really like game changing, or revolutionary. But rather they like shiny stuff.

Most people talking about it will never buy either of both vehicles, but there is a good chance that there will eventually be more Tesla-Semi drivers, than Tesla Roadster 2 drivers.

Still people give way more attention to the rather pointless vehicle.

“Data?” Your own website demonstrated this in spades. I was actively looking for info on the new semi the day after the show, and *I could find nothing*! Literally nothing. Not one story was about the semi.

Maybe you are thinking of a different site? Or were checking the ‘during’ the reveal itself (we didn’t do a late night live cast for the Semi…nor did we have anyone working at 1-2 AM ET putting out follow-ups, but rather started the article run at ~7AM the morning after). Here is a list of stories over the first ~48 hours (the first 4 of which, where within ~12 hours of the reveal itself). At one point on the 17th, the insideevs first page of articles was ALL Tesla Semi and roadster articles.

Absolute game changer…Roadster is a performance machine and they shared the relevent specs (performance date, price, range & battery size)…

Semi was a bit of a let down…Will “save you 20%” & “break even point after two years”…Since full power 0-60 romps aren’t efficient, fleet operators may disable them…An important spec is actually the opposite, braking performance, as LRR tires increase stopping distance…No pricing was available at the reveal, the convoy while pitched as cheaper than rail, didn’t give any pricing details including if convoy mode is free if you buy three, the cost of insurance & if there’s a solution to charging all three at the same time…

I agree that Tesla’s (or Elon’s) habit of giving out details on its new vehicles in dribs and drabs is somewhere between frustrating and infuriating, and it seems very strange indeed that Elon didn’t state the estimated prices during the Reveal, since it’s the costs involved which will most interest trucking fleet buyers.

However, I take issue with one of your points: I don’t think Tesla is in a position to say or even closely estimate what the cost of insurance will be. That would be up to the insurance companies.

Seems like he had to have insurance factored in as if this think is all carbon fiber it’ll be more expensive…But how much will the driverless vehicles cost?…Also a lot of fleets lease and may want to lease a Tesla, no details given on the lease…

Tesla will be offering its own insurance. Because insurance companies have been raising their rates on Tesla products because they are in more often and cost more to repair.

The semi is by far the biggest most disruptive and positive influence for sustainable transportation, and will by far do more to further that goal than. $250k 1%er toy.

I can’t agree more, the Roadster is a cool car, but it really doesn’t change anything. The amount of people that will afford this is small and I don’t think more people will buy a Model 3, just because there is a Tesla super-car now, or rather at some point in the future there will be one.

The Semi on the other hand could really help to transform the transportation business.
