In Research and Markets’ latest report, titled “Strategic Analysis of Brazil Electric Vehicle Market – Era of Electric Vehicles in Brazil, With Market Growing to More than 80,000 Units by 2020” a few predictors can be found.

For example (and as the title of the report says), electric vehicles sales are expected to reach 80,000 units annually in 2020.

However, in Brazil, electric vehicles won’t all be of the type that are now present here in the US.  The Brazilian electric vehicle market will likely be dominated by scooter, motorcycles and trikes, though electric passenger vehicles will be present.

It’s believed that Brazil’s plug-in vehicle market will slowly grow in almost direct correlation to the public charging infrastructure.  What this means is that as more public chargers come online, more plug-ins will be sold.  The growth will be slow though, as Research and Markets doesn’t predict an immediate boom.

But still, 80,000 is a decent figure, even if it’ll take 7 years to get there.

My bet for 2020 would be on electric cars with range extenders propelled by ethanol or, even more likely, a “flex fuel” (gasoline/ethanol) range extender. BMW i3 is expected to be priced at US$ 100,000.00. And you think US EVs are expensive…

This seems like a very optimistic forecast for Brazil. Currently there are less than 100 PEVs, and not only there are no government incentives but very high import taxes. The Nissan Leaf is estimated to cost USD100,000 with current import duties. There are some e-bikes and e-scooters, but nothing even close to the 80K forecast.
