Polar adventurer Marek Kaminski drove 16,000 km from Poland to Japan in a Nissan LEAF

The second-generation Nissan LEAF with its 40 kWh has just 151 miles (243 km) of EPA range, but as it turns out, that’s somehow enough to go across a big chunk of the world.

Polish polar adventurer Marek Kaminski, the first person to walk to both the North Pole and the South Pole, solo and unsupported, recently completed the 16,000 km (9,944 miles) journey from Poland to Japan in a LEAF and now is on his way home (another 16,000 km in a LEAF).

The journey through 8 countries (including Lithuania, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, China and South Korea) took 60 days. Most of the distance driven was in places where there are not many charging stations available.

Here are some stats for 13,000 km of the trip (excluding 3,000 km through CHAdeMO-rich Japan):

After an epic 16,000-kilometer drive, polar explorer Marek Kaminski has arrived in Japan, having started his landmark #NoTraceExpedition in Poland three months earlier in Europe’s best-selling electric vehicle, the new Nissan LEAF.

Marek’s eco-friendly trip took him from Zakopane, Poland through eight countries over two continents and a host of varying driving conditions, passing through Lithuania, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, China and South Korea on his way to the finishing point in Tokyo.

The “no trace left behind” mantra of the #NoTraceExpedition demonstrates the feasibility of zero-emission travel by electric car, and sets the example for explorers wanting to visit the world’s furthest corners without damaging the environment.

Though Marek can claim to be the first man to have trekked to the North and South Poles in the same year, his expedition by electric car is likely to be just as memorable. Among Marek’s adventures, detours along dirt tracks in Mongolia and some inventive charging solutions in Russia were notable highlights.

Unfazed by the first 16,000 kilometers, Marek will now get back behind the wheel and complete the return journey from Tokyo to Poland in the same car.

Well done! Goes to show the Leaf can do more than around-rown driving. Me and wife have added 6000 km in two months with 0 issues as well.

The Nissan Leaf is the sustainable choice for “Intelligent Mobility” and any and all 10k+ mi. Adventures!

I agree it is possible to do more than just around town driving (not where I am since hardly any CCS within 200 miles of me), but when presented with a choice between a vehicle that can with a lot of hassle drive more than 150 miles and one that can easily drive 300 miles (and recharge much faster), which one would you buy? (for the purpose of long distance travel, if that is not your purpose it might not matter)

What’s the price? That’s a major point at the present.

You sure wouldn’t BUY the gaspig when you’re only going to drive over 150 miles in a day twice a year, if that.

You’d buy the far less expensive to own and operate car and then rent a gas pig when you needed to go long distances if you couldn’t figure out how to do it.

…and you’d STILL save money.

I wish I had 60 days I could spend just driving around in my Leaf. I would love to do a North American loop. A side trip to Alaska would also be nice.

Better wait until Electrify America finishes their EV charging station installs.

What happened to his wheels? He started out with stock aluminum wheels and then switch over to steel. I wonder if someone stole his wheels along the way and he had to pick up some replacement wheels at a local junk yard.

The max was Less than 500 km / day with an average of less than 300? Unless he was stopping to smell the roses, that is horrible.

This is my thought as well. I think a vehicle needs to be able to travel 1200 km in say a 12 hour period or I would just use gas. The Model 3 LR just barely reaches this threshold, and not in all conditions, but close enough I think I could work with it. The Leaf? No thanks, great town or regional car. Maybe make a weekend trip on CCS if you have them in your area (I don’t).

Lol…this is not a Leaf traveling on freeways this is the E Europe and Asia we are talking about. Good luck doing 1200km in a day.

Exactly. That’s optimistic even with gas.

I averaged 210 miles (335+ km)/day with a 75 mile range 2013 base Leaf en route to a 43,339 mile visit to each contiguous state capital. I also did 650.2 miles (1,046 km) in a single 24 hour period, Jan 1-2, 2016, Canadian border to California.

Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.

It is nothing compare to the other polish guy who did south to north Africa trip with the Nissan Leaf. Africa is far worst than any other place when it comes to access to electricity. Oh and he did it with the old! leaf.

My respect for that brave man.

We drove a LEAF 40 from Ireland to Finland and back on our vacation this summer. Covered over 8000 km (5000 miles). Had to mind the battery temps a bit as the highest ambient was 35 degrees C but made it back with no issues.

Did you take any ferries except the one from Ireland to the UK? I hope you weren’t cheating! 🙂

Magnus, the journey had 4 ferry crossing each way (Irish Sea, Channel, Puttgarden-Rodby, Stockholm-Helsinki) so definitely cheated there. 🙂

Amazing! Hopefully his fame and feat will drive up EV enthusiasm in his native Poland and elsewhere.

I could not find on the web how he could charde along the way. I would really want to know how he could go through Russia and Mongolia.
