Tesla Model S P100D With Ludicrous + Sets New 1/4-Mile World Record For 4-Door Production Sedan – Video


A Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous + mode engaged just set a new 4-door production sedan world record with a 10.72 second run down the 1/4-mile strip.

The folks over at DragTimes laid down the record-setting run at Palm Beach International Raceway.

The previous 1/4-mile record for the P100D with Ludicrous (but without the new + mode) stood at 10.76 seconds. It seems + mode doesn’t impact 1/4-mile times as positively as it does the 0 to 60 MPH dashes, as evidenced by the slim .04 difference in the 2 1/4-mile runs from pre and post + mode.

We’ve seen multiple 0 to 60 MPH passes now with Ludicrous + engaged on the Model S, but this DragTimes run appears to be the first fully documented 1/4-miler and the time of 10.72 seconds firmly puts the Model S into 10-second car territory (a vehicle that covers the 1/4-mile in less than 11 seconds, but over 10 seconds).

Do Teslas drive well? Are the vehicles comfortable? Do they handle well?

Are they really worth buying? There is more to a vehicle than just it’s drag racing capability.

All of your pints are true. However…
People buying cars worth as much as houses rarely care about practicality. It’s about bragging rights.

So yes, the drag racing times of this car keep it in the headlines, keeps rich guys excited about them and buying them (sometimes buying a LOT of them to always have the fastest/newest) and keeps cash flowing into Tesla to continue development of future products.

It’s all good. Just enjoy the ride.

Easy bro, there’s a little of everything at this site. Everything from new released car info, to updates in battery technology, and yes, even race stuff. I don’t get why it’s angers some folks so much to see very fast cars used in a very fast manner, but it’s gonna be okay…

Speaking only for myself, I’m perfectly happy to see Tesla cars used at closed racetracks. Anything to advertise EVs and fight the public perception of them as slow “punishment” cars!

But it does make me angry to see publicity given to illegal drag races run on public roads. Dozens of videos of those have been the focus of articles here at InsideEVs.

I wonder how many of those illegal drag races have resulted in an accident involving a car that wasn’t competing in the race? Of course, those involved likely wouldn’t upload a video of that to the Internet!

The front is very comfortable. The back seat is also as comfortable as most any sedan. I am 6′ and fit fine, people much taller than that would probably be cramped. It handles very well while providing a smooth ride, thanks to the low COG. However you need to set expectations–it is a 5000 lb 4 door large sedan, not a sports car.

Is it worth it? It’s a 70k-140k car. It still does basically the same thing as a Camry in that it will drive you place to place. So most people (myself included) would say no. But if you are OK with spending that kind of cash on a car, yes: most owners are very happy with it and would buy it again.

Go to a Tesla store and do a test drive.

I have over 60,000 Model S miles, earlier with a 2013 S85 and for the last 2 years with a 2015 P85D with Ludicrous added. Last month my car was hit when parked, and the other person’s insurance had to get me a loaner car while mine was in the body shop. I got an almost new Mercedes E 350, which most people would likely be highly impressed with….BUT it drove like farm tractor compared to the Tesla. Yes, it is expensive to “buy into” any Tesla, especially the more high end versions, BUT they are DIRT CHEAP to operate and maintain. All my road trips have cost me ZILCH for actual travel (Superchargers are FREE forever for us early Tesla adopters); there is essentially ZERO service cost. I get the tires rotated every 5-6000 miles at my local America’s Tire Shop (and that is FREE), and there is actually ZERO required annual maintenance. I have 37,000 miles on the original tires and they have over 45% tread depth remaining… And my current model has the early version self-driving and smart cruise control, so it is totally relaxing in traffic jams; I just put on the auto steer and let… Read more »

That’s because it has the same farm tractor engine. The Mercedes and the farm tractor have both state of the art combustion engines.

Everybody knows that Model S is a 7 seat sedan with lots of trunk space, very practical car, very similar to the Cadillac.
It wasn’t designed for drag racing, it’s just having the natural advantage of electric propulsion.

Now let’s put the same vehicles on a road coarse and see which one wins. There is no denying the Model S is a superior drag car. The problem is life has curves.

Actually with the battery sitting lower than the hubs of the wheels the Model S does well around corners. I’m sure it has no problems with a CTS-V, and many other performance vehicles on the roads today.

I’m sure it gets killed by CTS-Vs etc. The Tesla is very heavy and the motor rapidly goes into power reduction mode to prevent overheating.

Teslas are great 0-60. But you don’t accelerate from 0 very often in road racing. All the rest of their time their weight is going to worsen their cornering and wear out their tires and fade their brakes quickly. And the engine reduces its effort after barely a minute and then cuts output even more a few minutes later if you continue to lap it hard.

Well, how quickly DOES a P100D go into power reduction around a race track? I’ve yet to see a single account of what you say!

It is called physics and weight matters.

Yes, I love the P100D. But its weight is its enemy. CTS-V is designed to corner as well as fast in straight line and 200mph top speed.

In the America’s version of Top Gear, they pitted a P90D against a CTS-V and a Hell Cat. The P90D was the fastest car to the first corner on the race course, but after that it was all CTS-V. The CTS-V beat the Tesla by over 3 seconds per lap!!!!!

That is eternity in racing.

Tesla is the BEST drag racing car money can buy, but it isn’t the fastest on the corner despite its low COG. Weight eventually adds up.

CTS-V is faster performance car on the windy course for sure.

Of course, the CTS-V is also a lot cheaper.

Yeah, but this is America. And American racing tradition is all about…

Yeah, that’s called the Electric GT, which at this point is all Tesla P100D’s. I can’t wait!

My S is the best handling car I have ever owned or driven – period. Instant, torque, extremely low center of gravity, one pedal driving with a strong regen. It will go faster than I have the courage to try. – amazing road car….The GT racing series will be really interesting.

What’s going to happen when a lighter, trackable version comes along. I imagine the goalposts will move another foot or two!

Wow, that is crazy fast.

I want to see them run at altitude. With the less wind resistance I would expect another 0.1 or 0.2 shaved off and maybe an increase of a couple mph.

Up until Tesla, a factory stock sedan doing the quarter mile in the 12’s would’ve been something to really brag about.
