Next Spring Daimler will start production of 80 kWh batteries for the EQC.

Daimler subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive intends to double the amount of employees to roughly 1,000 by the end of 2018, gearing-up for the launch of the second battery pack production factory in Kamenz, Germany.

The first facility already produced more than 200,000 packs for BEVs, PHEVs, HEVs and energy storage systems and from Spring 2019 on, the second factory will begin volume production of all-new battery packs for the Mercedes-Benz EQC.

The EQC itself will enter production in mid-2019, as batteries first need to be shipped to the Bremen plant (also in Germany). The first all-electric SUV from Daimler has been in the pre-production stage since summer of this year.

Daimler is investing some €500 million in Kamenz and in total €10 billion globally to have more than 130 electrified models by the end of 2022, including more than 10 all-electric cars.

Battery packs are to be produced at eight factories, in six locations on three continents:

Daimler subsidiary Accumotive doubles the amount of employees to approximately 1.000

Stuttgart/Kamenz, Germany – The Daimler AG is putting intensive work in the expansion of the global battery production network and is paving the way for the creation of a cross-divisional electro initiative. The wholly-owned Daimler subsidiary Accumotive at the Kamenz location in Germany will employ around 1.000 people until end of the year 2018. “We are taking big steps in the direction of electromobility. At Accumotive we will double the amount of employees until the end of the year 2018. We will achieve this almost one year earlier than initially planned. We are thus heading for the start of production of the EQC in spring 2019,” announced Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, during a visit of Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of Saxony, in Kamenz.

During a factory tour – at which Roland Dantz, Lord Mayor of Kamenz, Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, Jörg Burzer, Head of Quality Management at Mercedes-Benz Cars, Frank Deiß, Head of Production Powertrain Mercedes-Benz Cars, as well as Heiko Steinmetz, one of the Managing Directors of Accumotive, have participated – the Minister President Kretschmer has gained insight in the electro-strategy of Mercedes-Benz Cars and got an overview concerning the current progress of the site in Kamenz. On this occasion, Prime Minister Kretschmer took the opportunity to test drive the EQC, the new all-electric vehicle from Mercedes-Benz.

According to Kretschmer: “What has grown and continues to grow here in Kamenz in recent years is an important investment for Europe, Saxony and Lausitz region. By the end of the year, the number of jobs in the modern plant for lithium-ion batteries is expected to double to over 1,000. In this way, the technology location will continue to develop into a center of electromobility. I would like to thank Daimler AG for the trust it has placed in the Saxony location, with its know-how, its outstanding specialists, its strong and industry-oriented research and development and its experienced supplier network, especially in the field of electromobility.”

The German Accumotive GmbH & Co in Kamenz (around 50 kilometers away from Dresden in Germany) was found in 2009 is producing lithium ion-batteries for vehicles of the brands Mercedes-Benz and smart. At present a second battery factory is being built at this site with an investment of 500 Mio. Euros. This will be one of the largest and most modern battery factories worldwide. The investment of Daimler strengthens the region Saxony as important innovation hub of the German automobile industry and offers employees good perspectives in a prospective technology field. Furthermore the subject training and professional development is very important at this site. The Minister President of Saxony has been able to get an impression of this through a talk with two apprentices during his factory tour.

In the course of electro initiative, Mercedes-Benz cars will invest ten billion Euros in the expansion of its electric fleet. By 2022, Daimler will electrify the entire portfolio of Mercedes-Benz, offering customers at least one electrified alternative in all segments. The company is planning to offer more than 130 electrified vehicle variants. Thereof more than ten will be fully electric passenger cars – throughout all segments, from the smart to the large SUV. The first Mercedes-Benz of the new product- and technology brand EQ will be the EQC, which will be ramped-up in spring 2019 in the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant and then will reach the market in mid-2019.

Daimler is investing more than one billion Euros in a global battery production network with in total eight factories at six locations and on three continents. This includes in Germany Kamenz and Stuttgart-Untertürkheim with two battery factories each as well as Sindelfingen, Peking (China), Bangkok (Thailand) and Tuscaloosa (USA).

“With meanwhile eight battery factories on three continents we are well represented in terms of electromobility in the powertrain production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars. Since 2012 we are producing batteries in Kamenz and have gained valuable knowledge. Our team is working highly motivated on a daily basis and is coping with the increasing quantities while operating the new systems”, says Frank Deiß, Head of Production Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The second battery factory in Kamenz has been designed as a CO2-neutral factory: Daimler thinks in the sense of electromobility holistically and builds the production on sustainability. A power station and a photovoltaic system will – in connection with fixed battery storage – provide the production facility with energy. The new battery factory sets standards with modern systems and technology measures in the domain Industry 4.0. The start of the pre-series production has started in mid-2018 and in spring 2019 the volume production of the EQC battery will follow. The construction of the second factory on a 20 hectare (2,152,782 square feet) large site, quadruples the production and logistic area in Kamenz to a total of around 80.000 m2 (861,112 square feet).

“The location Kamenz belongs to the pioneers in the electromobility worldwide and in Germany. For our employees the expansion of this site is a confirmation of their performance and their know-how. Since 2012 until today Kamenz has produced more than 200.000 batteries on the basis of the lithium ion technology,” says Steinmetz. Accumotive is producing drive batteries for electro- and plug-in hybrid vehicles and also batteries for the stationary Mercedes-Benz energy storage as well as for the 48-volt-system. The trendsetting 48-volt-board-network celebrated its premiere in the new generation of the S-Class and will be implemented gradually in different models with new Mercedes-Benz engine technology.

Daimler’s commercial vehicles are also relying on batteries from Saxony in the course of electrifying their portfolio. Both the Vans Vito and Sprinter will be equipped with drive batteries from Kamenz at the market launch in 2019, as will the current eCanter, the Fuso light truck from Daimler Trucks.

Deutsche Accumotive GmbH & Co. KG is a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG and has been established in 2009. The company produces batteries for hybrid- and electro-vehicles on the basis of lithium ion technology for vehicles of the brands Mercedes-Benz and smart. The competence for batteries and cell production has a long tradition at the site in Kamenz: ten years ago, the Daimler AG and Evonik Industries had run a battery cell production on-site. The article says they produced 200,000 battery packs and it also says they produced 200,000 batteries.
Is this battery cells? Also how many GW, gwh of batteries have been produced and what is the goal after these sites reach full capacity?

With “batteries” they mean battery packs. Battery packs for hybrids are usually not very big.

80KWh battery to move the vehicle 320-ish km’s, thats not real efficient MB……

Tesla’s are more efficient, by a significant margin. We know the MB, BMW etc have had Tesla’s pulled apart and studied.

So the question is: Why couldn’t they copy the Tesla hardware tech close enough to get similar ranges? (I wont even mention about Tesla releasing its first EV patents etc)

I might as well throw Jag in here as well, as nice an EV that they have released it to is just as inefficient as the MB when compared to Tesla’s offerings.

I’ll give MB points for finally getting their EV’s out there, but is their efficiency so behind? Or do they just have crap aerodynamics?

I guess we will have to wait for their second gen vehicles in 2030….. *sighs*

I suppose aerodynamics play a role here. The Mercedes looks like an SUV while Model X…well, it sort of looks like a really big hatchback, the price one pays for uncompromisingly going for all the range the battery is worth.

I wish the discussion on efficiency here could be split between aerodynamics and machine-efficiency. I am sure the germans know how to make batteries, motors, power-controllers, cables and the other stuff required for an EV – it is not very hard. I am also sure Tesla knows this, but yet still has some challenges to overcome on this area, eg high standby power consumption.

But on aerodynamics Tesla seems to have the lead. This is a matter of choosing a design with a low Cd for a given set of variables. Choosing at what speed the vehicle should have the relative lowest Cd. But it is also a choice of design, and I guess the Tesla looks goofy to many Europeans, and MB opts for the classic look. This is not low efficiency, this is lower aerodynamic efficiency based on design choices.

This is essentially an ICE conversion, will all the associated downsides. (Including poor aerodynamics and huge weight, among others.)

Their proper BEV platform created from the ground up is supposed to come in 2021, though…

It has same drawbacks as the IPace from Jaguar. Slow charge rate, poor efficiency.
It’s announcing a car that is 2 years behind the times and coming out sometime next year, and this is a “Tesla Killer.”

With a 80kw battery, lets assume 5kw kept in reserve to protect the battery, so 75k usable.

75 / 22.2 *100 = 338 KM = 210 mile range.

The Europeans are very conservative with the ratio of gross capacity to net/usable capacity, to enure long battery life.

The E-Tron-55 with 95KWh gross is around 84 KWh net/usable, The I-Pace has a measured 81 KWh net/usable out of 90 KWh gross, so the EQC should be (my guess haven’t got any exact info) around 71-72 KWh out of 80 KWh gross.
