Road and wind noise bugging you in your Tesla Model 3?

Yes, EVs are quiet. In fact, if you’ve never driven an electric car before, it’s almost haunting when you start it up. There is really no sound whatsoever. People may ask you, “Is it running?” However, there’s one issue with the fact that the car itself doesn’t generate any sound. It’s kind of like sleeping in a silent room with no fan on, nothing to create ambient noise, and nothing else to drown out the “other” sounds.

A friend of InsideEVs recently bought a Tesla Model 3 Performance. He’s never owned or driven an EV before. His only complaint was that it’s so quiet. He actually said it’s just too quiet, and he can hear every bit of wind and road noise unless he cranks up the audio system.

While this may not be something that bothers the seasoned EV driver, the masses might take issue. Fortunately, some OEMs have taken note of this obvious problem and been proactive. For example, many Audi e-tron reviews praise its level of “quiet.” However, what if the road and wind noise is just plain irritating, like it may be for some Tesla Model 3 owners?

No worries since there’s almost always some easy solution when it comes to such concerns. It’s not difficult or expensive to add additional door seals/weather stripping to a car. The above video outlines exactly how to do it in great detail. Soon, SD Tesla will publish another video sharing the results of his noise reduction efforts. Hopefully, his work pays off!

Wind noise is one aspect Tesla need to improve. I hear people finding excuses adout evs being more wind noise susceptible because the lack of engine but to me that’s bull. I have driven top end cars many times and some of the german ones are coffin quiet, the engine noise and anything else are completely eliminated. Both the S and the 3 are bad in this category.

I’ll stick with my plan on putting my one 10″ sub in the frunk and 2 10″ subs in the back, there, no more noise from the wind.

Actually, that is pretty interesting. Audio engineer in Tesla needs to investigate active noise cancelling in the car wind noise. I think some sort of inverse low freq sound wave to counter the wind noise and vary it based on speed. If it works, just make it a software update.

Yes, that would be a far more elegant solution than the rather primitive, almost jerry-rigged one shown here.

some people just like to complain, my 3 has wind noise but it doesn’t stop me from leaving the stereo off sometimes when I drive just to enjoy the silence. sure it’s not a rolls royce but i’m not a saudi prince either!

My X has a lot of wind noise. I wonder if it is the seams in the falcon doors.

Where’s the best place to buy the additional door seals?

I bought a $50K car and I still have to seal it. LOL.

And after all that (plus trying to force us to listen to a home-made soap opera about all the problems he’s having in his life) he didn’t even tell us if it helped or not. 🙄

I wonder if this video was actually created by an automobile detailing company, as a way to show why you should leave this sort of aftermarket modification to the experts. 😉

Seriously, he points out the drain vents at the bottom of the door, saying they shouldn’t be blocked… then he goes right ahead and blocks them!

But worst of all is he doesn’t even tell us if the additional seals helped noticeably, or not. I find it rather odd that IEVs chose to make this into an article. Wouldn’t it have been better to wait until the follow-up, where he tells us how effective the new seals are… or aren’t?

Without moving the molding around the holes, a simple hole punch on the foam molding would take car of the drain issue. That’s what OEMs do to the existing molding.

Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking as I was watching him do the install: That he was going to cut (or as you say, punch) a hole where the drain vent was. But then he didn’t!

If you want it more silent, take it to your local car audiphile store and they can silence it more.
Typically with some MLV laid through out the car.
We car audiophiles have been doing this for years!

Yeah. If I wanted to do sound deadening on a $40,000+ car, I certainly would take it to professionals to do that.

I attempted to dampen out the road noise in my 2013 Volt by using a Constrained Layer Damper (CLD). This is a product that has Butyl rubber and aluminum. Brands include Dynamat Extreme, FatMat and Second Skin Damplifier. I then added Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) everywhere I could fit it. There is not that much room under all the molding for this type of product. In the end, I spent $500 on product, and it took me about 40 hours to install.

My verdict? I cannot tell a difference in road noise. By I did manage to reduce my range by about 4 miles per charge for the added weight. I plan to take it out one of these days.

Why would you reduce range.? It does not weigh that much. I have dynamat extreme all over our fiat 500e, even behind the dashboard. It is pretty much dead silent. In the winter time it also helps as insulation thereby extending the range a little bit.

Between the CLD and the MLV, I estimate I added over 250 lbs. With an EPA estimated range of only 38 miles per charge for the 2013 Volt, I definitely noticed the difference. I also noticed reduced performance. Acceleration is not what it used to be.

That’s weird. In my 2013 Volt, I got nearly identical performance and range, whether it was just me, or me the wife and the kid.

Now…load it up with 3 other typical fat Americans and I could tell a difference…but if you’re range dropped by over 10% by just adding another “passenger” you’ve got a bigger problem.

I don’t think one should have to do this on a $60,000 CAD vehicle – Tesla or other. My 2018 Leaf is very quiet and I often drive without the radio on as to experience the quietness. I’ve also owned many other less expensive ICE cars at a quarter of this price, that don’t have wind noise beyond anything normal. And yes I’ve also had some ICE cars that had more wind noise then they should have. But none of them even close to the Model 3 or equivalent price point. So, am I missing something on this article?

I’m going to be adding Coco mats from for the passenger compartment and probably the wool material mat for the trunk. I expect it to quiet the Model 3 by a lot and that’s just a side benefit to their looking amazing and the additional durability. And they’re made in Fort Mill, South Carolina, USA!

What was the point of this video? There was no information on whether the door seals made any difference to noise.
