Does this 400-horsepower coupe sound too good to be true?

The new brand Piëch Automotive presents a concept of its new electric sports car, dubbed the Mark Zero, at the Geneva Motor Show. It is the first in a line of products that Piëch Automotive plans to launch in the next three years.

The Piëch Mark Zero is an electric gran tourer that measures in at 14.2 feet (4.32 meters) long, with a wheelbase of 8.6 feet (2.62 meters), and a height of 4.1 feet (1.25 meters). The concept is powered by three electric motors: an electric motor on the front axle produces 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts), and two synchronous motors on the rear produce 201 hp (150 kW). Acceleration to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) takes 3.2 seconds, and top speed is listed at 155 mph (250 kmh).

The batteries should 310 miles (500 kilometers) of range on the WLTP scale. According to Piëch, the car uses a “completely new cell type,” which hardly heats up when loading and unloading, and allows for an 80-percent charge in less than five minutes. So “refueling” only takes a little longer than gasoline. The batteries are completely air-cooled due to the low heat, which contributes to a weight saving of about 440 pounds (200 kilograms). The total weight of the car should be under 4,000 pounds (1,800 kilograms).

The batteries are partly in the center tunnel and partly housed on the rear axle. Thus, weight distribution should result in classic sports car proportions. The low-mounted package allows for a typical low seating position.

The batteries come from the Desten Group Ltd. out of Hong Kong, which has battery expertise in the consumer sector. The charging infrastructure is managed by Qingdao TGood Electric Co. Ltd. from China and Hong Kong, which, according to Piëch, is a global leader in charging infrastructure and eHouse solutions. TGood is reportedly operating over 210,000 charging stations in more than 300 cities.

In addition to two partners, Piëch has a permanent team of specialists with years of experience in various industries. Together with around 200 external employees, the new platform was developed. Based on this, various body and drive variants can be developed.

Thanks to the modular concept, both the software and the hardware (such as the rechargeable batteries) can be updated and exchanged. At the same time, the modular structure also allows drivetrains other than the pure electric drive of the Geneva concept, such as various hybrids or a hydrogen fuel cell. In the future, the flexible platform will also be offered to other manufacturers.

Three vehicle variants are planned: in addition to a two-seater, there will also be a four-seater, and a sporty SUV. Other concepts in the form of convertibles or pick-ups are also conceivable. Production will be done in collaboration with other partners, but they are not mentioned yet.

Well he knows Elon isn’t involved so that’s all he needs to know, literally

Musk has never claimed anything as unlikely as this like Peich or Fiskar for that matter.

Why is what Musk claims even relevant. The religious worship of him is frankly bizarre and unhealthy, especially as he has NPD.

Musk’s FSD claims are much less realistic than this 5 minute battery charging claim. Toshiba’s LTO SCiB batteries could do that years ago. They’re too big and heavy for long range BEVs, but their new TNO cells could work in high end BEVs like this one.

I don’t know anything about this car or Desten. But the charging time claims are not “unlikely”.

Fast charging has been a Tesla strength, but their technical leadership is under attack. Let’s see how they answer with Supercharger v3 tomorrow.

So far Musk has delivered on the product specifications, he just has problems with time frames.

If someone said they had a pickup that got 100 miles per gallon, could you tell if they were BS’ing or not?

Not hard, just apply some physics and it becomes clear.
While technically possible, I’ve done it, handling a .4MW charge rate in consumer’s hands is going to be problematic.
Nor is it needed when a more viable 10 minute charge handles it well since one needs to stretch, walk, pee, get a drink, food, do e mails, etc anyway can take longer.

Well my math says it will take around 1200 kw (1.2 MW) to charge this thing, and that is assuming use of their new ‘high-efficiency’ battery system – whatever that is. I keep going back to my one-liner – who is going to pay for this? If it is a boutique item there won’t be enough of them around to have commonly available charging stations.

But someone well-healed enough to have a ‘dump-battery’ charger in their house could conceivably have one if they have around $50k to spend on it.

They’ll just do a deal with Tesla to use their 7 cent/kWh Megachargers…

DDWorld you have a point – although Musk’s 7 cent/kwh deal seems much more likely – as he didn’t have to specify any particular charging rate – and it assures the customer of a stable fuel price – one last thing for the customer to worry about since Musk is taking care of all the troublesome particulars – I’m sure that at least DOUBLES the amount of truck sales since it makes the tentative purchase of his SEMI much more worry-free.

Yes, but batteries that have more than a couple of mAh of capacity and can do it 1000 times are science fiction at this point.

BS on the car? Maybe. Piech has the name but his company is a tiny startup, probably fishing for venture capital.

Calling BS on 5 minute charging is just ignorance, though.


The need for an open platform available to hybrid and gas powertrains suggests that the EV price is going to be either very expensive, or very limited. I guess it is possible to make battery cells that can take extremely fast charges, but they would be very inefficient. That might explain the weight of the car.

5 minute recharge is an extraordinary claim. Which requires, you know, extraordinary proof…

SCiBs have done it for years. Toshiba’s new TNO SCiB could work in this car. Maybe that’s what Desten uses, maybe not, but 5 minute charging is not some fantasy.

300 miles – so give or take 100 kWh. A 5 minute recharge would need somewhere in the ballpark of 1 MW .. or ~15 minutes on a 350 kW charger, essentially the same as the Taycan.

If they were serious about making use of the 5 minute charge time in the real world, it’d make sense to reduce the battery pack size down to 40-50 kWh. This would decrease weight and cost and increase performance .. and still give a 0-80% 5 minute charge on a 350 kW charger.

It is lighter as it is passively cooled. Maybe just 75 kw-h

Passivlely cooled and high charging currents, the dream combination.


If you assume 95% charging efficiency, 5% of 1MW is 50 kW. Try putting 50 space heaters in a space of battery, and you’ll be cooking in few seconds.

LTO/TNO cells don’t have 5% losses during fast charge.

It seems nice. We have good EVs now so I won’t get excited about radical claims until it is on the road, performs as advertised, and I know what it costs. Maybe even wait to see some real world battery degradation curves.

12C charging is not radical. Lithium cells which charge at an even higher rate have been available for years, and are used extensively in the RC hobby industry.

Is this ‘Qing Tao’ solid state battery manufacturer related to the ‘Qingdao TGood Electric Co. Ltd’ company referred to in today’s article? If so that might explain some of the performance figures being quoted!

Sounds too good to be true… Looks like an Aston Martin rip off… Lets see if it ever actually gets built and sold in any sizeable numbers.

If someone really had that tech, they wouldnt bother with a small volume sports car, they’d simply license the battery to not just every EV manufacturer but pretty much everyone with a battery driven product, eg fully recharging your power tools in 5 minutes, your lawnmower, your fork lift truck etc etc.

This car won’t be made until 2022 (if ever). The cells they plan to buy could show up in phones sooner. Except they might be too big for phones. Or too heavy.
