  • Rivian will begin inviting customers to configure their own personal R2 beginning on June 9th.
  • The time from ordering to delivery is between 2 and 6 weeks.
  • Customers can also wait for their desired trim or paint option to be available without losing their ability to order.

The Rivian R2 is finally almost here. After two long years, pre-order holders will start getting cars  in just two weeks. Rivian officially announced on Wednesday that the automaker will begin sending invites for customer orders starting on June 9th, with first deliveries taking place on the same day.

Customers who put a deposit down on an R2 will begin receiving emails letting them know that it's time to configure their very own R2 and lock in the order for their desired spec. Once configured, Rivian says that the vehicle will be ready for delivery in just 2 to 6 weeks. Here's how the process will work.

Rivian is sending out invitations to order in batches, prioritized by a few different factors. First,  and most important, are the reservation timestamps and delivery location. Rivian says that these are the primary factors of when invites will be sent out.

There are also a few other ways that invites will be prioritized. Existing R1 owners will receive "accelerated delivery timing," according to Rivian, though the automaker says that it's balancing this priority alongside non-Rivian owners so that the line can keep moving for everyone at a fair pace. The brand says that it will also factor in expiring leases "where it can," so owners with a lease ending may also get a bump in line if there's room.

There's also a randomly selected group of reservation holders that Rivian says will be invited into early batches of R2. Rivian says that this will help the automaker refine its timing estimates in the ordering process early on.

For those who get invited but are not yet ready to order, Rivian says that your place in line will be saved and you can order whenever you're ready. This is extremely important for early reservation holders who want to wait for a vehicle with lidar (even though Rivian says that tech won't necessarily matter for a few years) or color choices not yet available, like Rivian's sweet Borealis purple paint.

Keep in mind that early buyers will only be able to buy R2's Launch Edition for now. The R2 Premium and R2 Standard trims will be available in late 2026 and 2027, respectively. Reservation holders invited to configure a Launch Edition but waiting for a different trim will also have their reservation priority apply once those are released.

What do you think?

This is a big deal for the company. Rivian's Model Y moment begins in just two weeks. Those who have been waiting nearly two years for Rivian's mass-market electric SUV will soon be able to order and, production hell permitting, receive one fairly quickly. As many as 25,000 R2 deliveries are planned for 2026.

And if you absolutely can't wait to get your hands on an R2, there is some good news. You'll at least be able to get behind the wheel for a demo drive at a nearby Rivian Space beginning on June 9th.
