Bjorn Nyland no longer holds the Tesla Model S record on a single charge, as Casey Spencer covered 100 more miles in an 85D.

He was driving for 26+ hours, exceeding 550 miles at an average speed of approximately 20 mph:

Slow speed, and turning everything off was key to setting the new record and becoming the first person to drive a Model S past the 500-mile mark on a single charge.

According to Teslarati’s coverage:

“He embarked on his voyage in the early AM hours when temperature was at its lowest point thereby eliminating the need to have any air conditioning on. Driving at night also guaranteed that a minimal amount of cars would be on the road. Two external battery-powered fans were used to keep in-cabin temperatures bearable as daylight swung around the horizon.

Casey broke the journey down into three legs with each leg having a different characteristic. The first leg would be mainly downhill, and at night – low temperatures, no wind and coasting most of the way.

The second leg would be mainly flat elevation but would take him into the daylight hours with an increase in windspeed. The third and final leg of the record run would see mainly tail winds bringing him over the finish line at an astonishing 550.3 mi (885.62 km) of distance travelled on a single charge.”

Stats from the 500-mile record-beating trip:

  • 76.8 kWh used, which represents 90% of the 85kWh pack
  • 140 Wh/mi average
  • Tires overinflated to 50 psi
  • Drove for 26 hours straight

That’s 880 km. If I work at it I think my Volt will go further on a single charge. 🙂

His first leg was mostly downhill. This is a kind of CHEATING: I can drive any car downhill with the engine off in neutral using Zero gas.

What would be his real score going all flat? This is why we need the Guinness Book people here, to enforce reasonable rules, and to prevent cheats of various kinds that we don’t know about. (For example: Did he have a trucker friend drive before him, so he could draft half the way?)

I see these records as mostly for fun, not to be entered into the record books, so I don’t mind that he used a hill.

Although I do suspect that if you keep towing a Tesla back to the top of a hill it can get INFINITE RANGE!! 😉 Actually that’s not true… it will run out of power for onboard electronics eventually. Maybe after a few months.

I find these kind of experiments to be stupid, dangerous and they prove no point.

That’s probably very close to the maximum distance. I’m surprised the average speed was so low. As I recall, the 313 mile distance record for the Roadster was set at about 35 MPH.

I’m pretty sure I could double the range in my SUV if I drove 20 mph too. What’s the point? I hope others do not try this too.

Do you also advocate violence against the Amish with their horse-drawn buggies, farmers driving farm machinery, and other low speed vehicles on public roads?

Public roads are not just for high speed travel, dude.

Well I sure hope these people put the ‘slow moving vehicle’ triangle symbol on the back of their car like the Amish buggies do.

Did you seriously compare a car that can do 155mph with a single horse drawn carriage?

It’s not illegal to do 20MPH (as long as you aren’t on a highway or aren’t impeding traffic). Yield to any build up of vehicles behind you and use turnouts or the far right lane and as close to the curb wherever possible.

With that said, speed differential has been found to lead to more accidents than speeding. If your speed is drastically different than the rest of the traffic (regardless of whether it’s higher or slower), you become a greater danger to everyone else on the road.

If you have access to a closed course for tests like this, use it.

Just to balance things out; maybe someone could run a Model S at a sustained speed of 100 mph with a headwind with an uphill stretch at the end.

The watt-hour/mile result would be just as useful.

I really see the point of this experiment. Prooves that range anixiety does not exist in certain driving scenarios. So, lets slow down, we’ll be able to go further.:)

Hypermiling fame is fleeting…

I now have almost 17,000 miles on my 2015 P85D and my cumulative watts/mile shows 299 w/mile. I do NOT baby the car, but do drive “legal freeway speed” and do demonstration “launches” at least 4-6 times a week. Further I have actually run my P85D 3 different times at open drag racing strips with a quarter mile performance best of 11.63 seconds @ 115.21 mph. This is “real world” operation economy which for the 16,000 cumulative miles is actually 10% LOWER power draw/mile than my earlier S85 (362 hp single motor) Tesla showed for the 24,000 miles i put on it and WITHOUT the full and regular “launch demonstrations.” I regularly see 270 miles of real range on road trips (Sacramento to Portland and Sacramento to Denver).

Wow George! That is amazing. Unfortunately the EPA tests don’t really capture that real world efficiency improvement.

Many years ago I had a friend who was driving a old 2CV (old French classic car). His top speed was around 85 Km/h with tail wind (about 50 Mph). One night he got reared by a German that came very fast behing him in his large Audi. The guy was probably tired & in a hurry to get back home. They both (my friend and his wife) were hospitalized for a long time, his car was pushed off the highway (up a tree almost…). So I hope car electrification will not lead to that kind of non sense being repeated over and over again. It is very dangerous to drive extra slow on a road as nobody is expecting a “wall” to sit in the middle of the street. Compared to this driving behaviour, drag racing on public roads could be considered ultra safe….

Why would it? All we really need is to build 1000x as many chargers as we have now, and the range issue is licked. If superchargers were even remotely as common as gas stations, you could floor it the whole way between them and not ever have to worry about range.

That day might not be today, but personally, I’m working to help make that day a reality.

Someone now needs to go for the “most EV miles in a Tesla in a 24 hour period” record. That would truly be ludicrous.

How long before Tesla makes a software update that puts an end to this kind of driving?

How can you stop someone from driving around the speed limit of most city streets? If I’m in rush hour traffic I could spend 45m-1h around this speed pretty easy if caught at the wrong area.

Well, “45m-1h” is not the same as 26h

Also, 3am isn’t anywhere near like 4:30 pm. Nor is “26 hours” anywhere near like “26 hours consecutively”. Just as interestingly, 20 mph *average* isn’t anywhere near like puttering along at a *constant* 20 mph. You know how they achieve those insane MPG ratings at the Shell Eco Challenge? The technique they use is known as “pulse and glide”, where the driver will accelerate to some optimum top speed and then turn off the engine, coasting the rest of the way. More than likely, the scenario played out here involved the first, downhill part of the trip going at or even above the speed limit. Who needs to worry about air resistance when it’s costing you nothing? Heck, I’ve done this on hillier bits of the Sea to Sky Highway and handily exceeded the speed limit of 100 km/h, even to the point of having to slow down for other traffic. Then, after this leg and on flatter terrain, slowly accelerating (never using more than say, 15 kW) to 70 or 80 km/h and then shifting into neutral until you stop, you can probably exceed the rated mileage of the car by about 3 or 4 times. It went from an awesome sports sedan to an expensive city Golf cart…

Things like this are just stupid for the real world and completely useless.

The only thing it would demonstrate or confirm is that the faster you go the more energy you burn… Duh!

Now let’s see who can get the shortest range!
