If only the Tesla were fun to drive & a leap forward in technology, then it might get nominated for Green Car of the Year!

The mission of Green Car Journal (as I understand it) is to “emphasize a joyful driving experience,” while  considering the categories of environmental impact, advancement in technology and fun-ness to drive.  Sounds like a Tesla Model S to me, or does it? Turns out, Tesla wasn’t even nominated for 2014 Green Car of the Year award by Green Car Journal.

Accord PHEV gets the back seat, while big brother hybrid gets all the attention.

Let us reconsider the Journal’s list of nominees for 2014:

Our very own Jay Cole spoke of this list way back in October, only he went easier on the Green Car Journal’s selections than I will.

Other “fun” cars on the past nominations list: Mitsubishi iMiEV, Toyota Prius, Honda Civic GX, Ford C-Max, Mazda CX-5, Mercury Milan, VW Golf diesel, Smart car, Saturn VUE, Honda Insight and the awesome Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid…whee!!!!

Now, the results start to make sense. We’ve got a group whose job titles far surpass their role as test drivers and judges in the Green Car Award. Jay Leno looks to be one of the few on the list worthy of voting in the GCJ Green Car of the Year award.

What vehicle will GCJ pick next year? My money is the 2014 Chevrolet Colorado diesel…

2014 Honda Accord Named Green Car Journal’s 2014 Green Car of the Year® Winner

Green Car Journal Reveals Winner During LA Auto Show® Press Days

After giving heavy consideration to each of the five finalists nominated for the Green Car of the Year® program, Green Car Journal named the 2014 Honda Accord winner of its prestigious award for 2014. This award honors the 2014 Accord model in all its iterations, including the Accord, Accord Hybrid, and Accord Plug-In. The announcement was made live from the LA Auto Show® floor, in front of a crowd of thousands of esteemed international journalists and industry VIPs on Nov. 21.

Honda’s Accord emerged on top of an exceptional field of finalists including the Audi A6 TDI, BMW 328d, Mazda3, and Toyota Corolla. According to Green Car Journal editors, the Accord has evolved in important ways to meet the needs of an increasingly sophisticated and changing market that seeks ever-higher fuel efficiency, lower CO2 emissions, and improved environmental impact, without sacrificing the features and driving experience expected by new car buyers. The 2014 Honda Accord brings notable efficiency with its conventional gasoline powerplants, and now ups its game with highly-efficient Accord Hybrid and Accord Plug-In hybrid choices that achieve up to 50 highway mpg or, in the case of the Plug-In, 115 MPGe, the highest of any mid-size hybrid sedan in the country.

In the Green Car of the Year® program, Green Car Journal editors identify five finalists after an extensive vetting process and the winner is selected by a majority vote of the Green Car of the Year® jury. Vehicles that are all-new or in the earliest stages of their model lifecycle carry additional weight, with models vetted in a previous award year considered only if significant changes to that model have occurred. The i-MiEV isn’t a track car, but is still fun to drive. Rear-wheel drive, instant EV torque, turn off traction control and fish tail around wet corners… what’s not to love? Okay, lack of power, nasty crosswind handling, and understeer unless you counter it with accelerator…

It’s much more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. 😉

It’s no surprise how the Honda Accord Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid won the 2014 Green Car Award if you read the qualifications.

“Vehicles that are all-new or in the earliest stages of their model lifecycle carry additional weight, with models vetted in a previous award year considered only if significant changes to that model have occurred.”

The Tesla Model S was a new car for 2013 and eligible, but lost to the Ford Fusion Hybrid/Energi models, and don’t qualify for 2014.

Author of this post (and the author of article) totally neglect the Spark EV and other EVs (BMW i3) which enter the market as 2014s. It’s standard for car awards to limit consideration to new models and significant model changes.

Some serious endorsements on this list. That’s alarming. Through control of the nominees, Green Car takes high flying names, from NRDC and EPA, and effectively has them harming the environment, by delaying the adoption of significantly cleaner tecnologies.

A 50+ mpg mid-size hybrid is NOTHING to sneeze at. And while Honda won’t be one to market its small-batteried, 39k, PHEV aggressively, this is at least the first time “Green Car” not only included one, but cited “Plug-In” numerous times in its release.

I also vote for 50+ EV miles. I’d really like around 80 in my next phev. makes getting back to the charger dock only a once a day occurrence. With my Chevy Volt I find myself doubling back to home all the time to make 2 charges per day so that I use as little gas, probably as many other Volt owners do with our “Gas Range Anxiety”. I know its not superimportant in the grand scheme of things, but it is a nice little game we play seeing how far we can drive our volts on electricity alone.

I have a coworker/friend who is the same way. He’ll go to great lengths to avoid burning gas. I sort of know how you feel, since I essentially have a Volt split into two vehicles (1 BEV, 1 Hybrid), and will go to great lengths to avoid the “gas guzzler” hybrid, even though it might mean burning 1/2 cup of gasoline.

I’m also lucky to have a very patient and understanding wife…

At least the Accord PHEV sort of has a rear seat (can you say Volt?) Let’s see if the next player can be lobbied or lawyered into figuring out some space for a trunk…
