The Polestar 2 Is Returning To North America
The fan favorite EV is going back on sale in North America, thanks to Canada’s openness to Chinese-built electric cars.
- The Polestar 2 electric fastback is returning to North America in September.
- The Chinese-built EV was discontinued in the United States last year, while Canada imported the last models in 2024.
- Now, Polestar’s first mass-market EV is coming back.
The Polestar 2 is going back on sale in Canada after a two-year hiatus forced by Ottawa’s 100% surtax on electrified vehicles built in China. The company’s entry-level EV also disappeared from its United States lineup last year, but there’s no word on when Americans will be able to order the four-door fastback again.
Meanwhile, Canadians can now order the Tesla Model 3 rival on Polestar’s official website, with the first imports slated for September, according to company representatives quoted by Automotive News Canada. On the automaker’s website, the earliest delivery window for a newly specced Polestar 2 is estimated to be between September and October.
The change comes after the U.S.’ northern neighbor replaced the 100% tariff for Chinese-built electrified cars with an annual 49,000-vehicle quota. The change opened the gates for several Chinese car brands to establish a presence in North America for the first time, and allowed some companies to significantly slash prices on their models.
“With over 7,300 Polestar 2s on Canadian roads to date, we know there’s demand from our customers, so it’s with great joy we announce the return,” said Hugues Bissonnette, head of Polestar Canada.
The Canadian-spec 2027 Polestar starts from $72,200 Canadian ($53,300) and is only available in the Long Range Dual Motor configuration, which comes with an 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack and two electric motors that can deliver a combined 421 horsepower. The estimated range is 277 miles (477 km), and the battery can be recharged from a DC fast charger at up to 205 kilowatts. The 10-to-80% top-up takes 28 minutes, and Plug & Charge is supported.
Polestar also sells the American-made Polestar 3 flagship EV in Canada, as well as the Polestar 4 crossover. The return of the entry-level Polestar 2 will likely be a stopgap solution for the company’s dealers up north, seeing how the second generation of the EV will debut next year.
“Polestar 2 is the foundation of our brand, with over 190,000 cars sold and an enthusiastic community of customers,” said Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO. “Bringing the next generation of this iconic car at record speed, by the start of next year, is very exciting. The car that we became known for will play a key role in our future success,” he added.
