How Easy Is It To Trade In A Cybertruck?

A man declares that he’s trading in his Tesla Cybertruck just 532 days after purchase. But, wait, just how easy is it to do that?

TikTok user Joe Fay (@jf.okay) purchased a Cybertruck nearly a year and a half ago. Earlier this week, Fay posted a video revealing that it’s time to part ways with the vehicle. “I’m finally getting rid of it, and here’s why,” Fay says to start the video. “And bonus points if you can guess what car I’m trading in my Cybertruck for.”

Is It Time To Trade In This Cybertruck?

“Yes, 532 days of ownership with one of the very first Tesla Cybertrucks,” Fay says. “And it’s obviously been far from perfect. But to be fair it’s honestly expected. This Cybertruck was one of the very first that Tesla ever built.”

Fay says this is natural for new models. “Whenever you have a new model of any vehicle of any brand, you have to expect that there’s going to be some issues,” he says. “In fact, this very Tesla Cybertruck has had several issues since I purchased it 532 days ago. And these issues are the only reason why I’m getting rid of this Tesla Cybertruck. And once you’ve driven a Tesla Cybertruck, you don’t want anything else.”

What Is Replacing His Cybertruck?

Astute viewers probably already know the video’s twist. “Which is why I’m replacing this Tesla Cybertruck with another Tesla Cybertruck,” Fay says. “In the past 532 days, Tesla has made a bunch of upgrades to the brand-new Cybertruck. You won’t see them, you won’t even really feel them. But trust me, it’s going to be so much better.”

Despite Fay’s rosy picture of the Cybertruck’s resale value, the real picture is a bit more complicated. The company did start accepting trade-ins of the vehicle this summer, but depreciation is hitting some owners for tens of thousands of dollars. According to CarGurus, the price of a used Cybertruck is down roughly 30% since last year.

Tell us what you think!

The Reddit users on this thread posted to r/TeslaLounge seven months ago generally agree that any changes between the two model years are negligible. Fay might be referring to a recent software update that impacts road feedback and adds suspension control to the app.

Viewers React To The Cybertruck’s Trade-In Potential

In the comments section of the TikTok video, viewers expressed concern that Fay is potentially in denial over the gravity of his situation.

“Just tell me when you show how much it depreciated when you trade it in,” wrote one person.

A second person said, “Only excuses.”

“This dude just HAS to say ‘Tesla Cybertruck’ constantly over and over just for us to know it is one,” wrote another person. “His comment every time someone says they would stick with a gas vehicle is always ‘why’ and he NEVEr replies. Like, bro, shut up.”

Fay cheekily replied, “Why.”
