New Smaller Audi e-Tron SUV Expected To Be Unveiled in Geneva

JAN 14 2019 BY MARK KANE 27

Audi is developing an alternative to the Tesla Model Y for a late 2020 launch.

According to Andreas Mindt, Head of Exterior Design at Audi, the company is working on a smaller version of the e-tron SUV. The compact SUV would be positioned in the same segment as the Tesla Model Y.

The concept version is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It could be interesting as Tesla also maybe will unveil the Model Y at a similar time.

In a previous announcement, the German manufacturer said that in late 2020 it will introduce an all-electric SUV based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.

We bet that the upcoming concept is directly related to the small electric SUV on the MEB platform. We’re now just one and a half years before market launch.

This is great news.

“The compact SUV would be positioned in the same segment as the Tesla Model Y.”
No it won’t. This is where the etron quattro is already positioned. This new SUV is going to be the size of a Q3.

Obviously all Audi cars will be priced above the Tesla equivalent for marketing position. If you want to claim you are superior you will have to charge higher prices. (This is marketing, it doesn’t concern itself with factuality.)

Audi e-tron is positioned against Model X and is cheaper than Tesla Model X.

Tesla needs to get significantly more margin than Audi. Audi margin should be around 10% (I don’t have the exact figure), Tesla is targeting likely around 25%. Can somebody confirm these figures?

The etron is the size of a Q5 and the Model X is the size of a Q7.

nope, it’s bigger than a Q5. Model X is its competitor. Apples to as close to Apples as possible the e-tron is significantly cheaper.

I would not say needs more margin, I would say achieves more margin, long term (once the factories are paid off) Tesla will be swimming in cash while Audi will be spitting even thinner margins with their dealers. e-tron is is not well positioned once the Model Y comes out. By long term, I mean less than 5 years.

Audi wants it compared to the Model X, but that doesn’t mean it is in the same class. It is sized more like a theoretical Model Y (midsize CUV) but priced more like the Model X 75d full size (now discontinued model). If rumors are true on Model Y, it might even offer 7 passenger, etc.

Let’s assume Tesla posts q4 $700 million profits, for the entire year they’ll still be negative I think.

True marketing determines what the customers want. Sales and promotion may be part of marketing, but they are not marketing.

Just to clarify something…

“According to Andreas Mindt, Head of Exterior Design at Audi, the company is working on a smaller version of the e-tron SUV. The compact SUV would be positioned in the same segment as the Tesla Model Y.”

Is the Model Y part of this speculation by the author or part of what Mindt said? The quoted text could be read either way, and it makes a pretty big difference.

Same here ginzo

Speculation. Although I don’t know if Autoweek or Electrek was first to claim that nonsense.

Audi is on a roll.

so is toilet paper – ba da bing!

I blame you for the Pepsi in my nose 😂😁

I think the real competition in standard gas powered vehicles….

Legacy manufacturers don’t see it that way, or they wouldn’t be offering hybrid and PHEV variants. They’d be all Byton/Rivian with their approach. Wouldn’t use terms like “electrified.” 2019 is definitely the year that everyone is saying here is our response. Will Toyota and Honda stray from their FCEV dreams? Will Mazda give up on the Wankel Rotary engine? Will Sergio Marchionne actually encourage people to buy the Fiat 500e? I look forward to the show.

Sergio Marchionne won’t be doing much of anything for the foreseeable future, except for pushing up daisies.

Well informed?
Yes, Sergio Marchionne died 7 months ago, so sure, he is pushing up daisies…..

RIP Sergio Marchione ‼️

This is hilarious. The Model Y isn’t even shown off yet. They should be saying they will compete with the Jaguar iPace.

Do Not Read Between The Lines

The iPace is severely production-limited. The Model Y wouldn’t be as limited.

It will be Q3 size with Q5 price.

Great. If your prediction is correct, it will be cheaper to own than Q3 after factor in the rebates, tax incentives and fuel cost.

Similar to what a SQ3 costs. The etron quattro costs the same as a SQ5.

The Audi compact SUV will a Q3 sized car. It will similar size and category as the coming BMW IX3.

Smart move Audi and others will compete with Model Y.
