Is Costco A Good Place To Get EV Tires Serviced?
‘Why do you care so much about saving $30, $40 if you have a Tesla?’ Well, 'cause that's just what I do.”
Even with a paid-off Tesla in the driveway, one EV owner isn’t above hunting for a deal, especially when tire rotations at the dealership top $70. So when Costco offered to do the same job for less than $30, he had just one question: Are they even allowed to do that?
Creator Howtomilitary (@howtomilitary) openly discusses his frugal nature in the viral TikTok clip, where he admits that the savings of a $28 tire rotation on his Tesla might be too much to resist. “I have a membership and it's literally, like, three times cheaper,” he said. “Before somebody says, ‘Why do you care so much about saving $30, $40 if you have a Tesla?’ Well, 'cause that's just what I do.”
Why Tire Rotations Matter More for EVs
For all the futuristic technology packed into an electric vehicle, tire maintenance remains a decidedly old-school task with high stakes. EVs like Teslas are significantly heavier than their gas-powered counterparts thanks to massive battery packs. That weight translates to faster tire wear, particularly on the rear tires, due to instant torque and regenerative braking systems.
Tesla recommends rotating tires approximately every 6,250 miles to avoid uneven tread wear and extend overall tire life. Failing to rotate them regularly can lead to premature replacement, and at around $1,000 for a full set of premium EV-rated tires, skipping this low-cost service can be an expensive mistake.
But it’s not just about frequency. Tesla vehicles require careful handling during rotation. Standard floor jacks won’t cut it; lifting a Tesla without jack pad adapters, often called “pucks,” risks damage to the battery tray or underbody. And while many drivers like Howtomilitary handle their brake jobs or oil changes on gas vehicles, Teslas are simply too heavy and too specialized for DIY rotations without the right tools.
This reality sends many owners to Tesla Service Centers or third-party shops. But that’s where the price gap becomes glaring. As Howtomilitary noted, quotes from Tesla and Tire Discounters top $70 or more for a simple rotation. Costco, meanwhile, offered to do the job for less than half that, prompting the viral question: Can they really do Teslas safely?

Can Costco Rotate Tesla Tires?
The short answer is: yes, but with some caveats. Costco Tire Centers do service Teslas and other EVs, so long as the specific store has technicians trained and equipped for the job. However, the company’s official stance is more limited than it might appear at first glance.
Tire rotations are offered for Costco members at a low price, typically $20 to $30, but are often limited to tires purchased through Costco. Some locations will service non-Costco tires for an additional fee, while others may decline the job altogether, depending on liability policies or technician experience.
Tesla forums and Reddit threads are filled with anecdotes confirming this inconsistency. On Tesla Motors Club, users shared stories about Costco rotation with proper jack pad use, while another cautioned, “you definitely need to make sure” the location has the correct pucks on hand.
Some locations reportedly do have the correct lift equipment and jack pads on hand, but others do not. Unlike Tesla Service Centers or EV-focused shops like Discount Tire, Costco’s EV readiness varies store by store.
In short: Call ahead, and don’t assume your local warehouse will be able or willing to touch your Tesla.
The price gap between Costco and Tesla service centers reflects deeper realities of the EV service ecosystem. Tesla’s service model has always emphasized direct control and standardization.
The company prefers to service its vehicles through Tesla-owned facilities or mobile service vans. While this reduces variability and ensures brand consistency, it also keeps prices high, especially for labor. As of 2025, Tesla's U.S. service pricing for tire rotation typically ranges from $60 to $85, depending on location.
In contrast, Costco operates on a loss-leader model in its tire business. The goal is to keep members renewing their $60/year memberships, and that means prices for mounting, balancing, and rotating tires often undercut traditional shops, especially for standard services.
However, this price advantage comes with tradeoffs. Tesla-trained techs will be familiar with model-specific lifting procedures, can flag early tire wear issues, and may update firmware or check alignment while the vehicle is in. Costco, by contrast, won’t offer that level of EV-specific support.
Still, for owners like Howtomilitary, that tradeoff might be worth it. As he points out in the video, his Tesla is paid off, and his personal financial discipline drives him to avoid paying more than necessary, even for routine services. For drivers who value cost savings and don’t mind doing a little legwork to vet their local tire center, Costco may be a smart move.
