- It will go on sale in China starting in August for about $42,000.
The Shanghai Auto Show may have been a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean China’s biggest automakers have stopped pulling out their new car debuts. In fact, it seems like the most important cars in China were held back, where manufacturers can do their own controlled launch. Car brand Xpeng seems to be no exception here. This week it announced its intention to completely redo its flagship model, the Xpeng P7.
If you’re confused, don’t worry because you’re likely not alone. The Xpeng P7 was one of the brand’s first models, introduced in 2019. The Tesla Model S inspired sedan dazzled foreign and Chinese domestic media alike with its gullwing doors and well-done driver assistance features. After a few years, the P7 was renamed the P7i, and then slowly phased out. Xpeng recently introduced the P7+, which the brand says is not related to this new car at all and is instead a more family-oriented sedan.

Got it?
For this year, the Xpeng P7 returns as a range-topping sporty sedan. Designed by the same French designer, Rafik Ferrag, who did the first one, Xpeng let him run wild for its latest effort. This car is meant to embody a “powerful blend of art, athleticism, and cutting-edge technology,” according to the brand.
And it certainly is a looker. The P7’s lines are long and graceful, if slightly retro in appearance. The exterior lighting is minimal, with the Y-shaped running lights neatly integrated into the black trim work that outlines the front fender and where the edge of the hood meets the top of the front fascia. The rear has a similar effect to the taillamps. It all culminates in a very sleek and clean roofline that gracefully flows into the nice and curt rear end. It’s a little reminiscent of the recently released China-only Honda GT, but I think it’s way cleaner than that car.
Like the old P7, this new P7 is destined for global markets. We don’t know much about the car’s whole running gear or mechanical specifics, aside from the fact that it will use camera-based driver assistance features, like Xpeng’s other vehicles. Xpeng says the P7 will start around $42,000 (300,000 CNY), and will go on sale in China by the end of the summer.

Xpeng is continuing to expand outward into foreign markets. The U.S. is still a no-go given the tariffs and hostile technological relationship between the two countries. Still, other markets will likely get the P7. Just a few weeks ago, Xpeng launched in the UK with its Tesla Model Y competitor, the G6. Interestingly, Xpeng says the P7 is the start of a new styling language for the brand. Could the next G6 eventually look like this car? Striking styling coupled with Chinese value and smart tech could be just what Xpeng needs to make inroads into foreign markets.
I certainly wouldn’t mind looking at a new P7 in my driveway.
