‘Pass Those Cost Savings Onto the Consumer': Expert Says VW Is Revamping Its EV Tech. Here’s What It Means For VW, Audi, Porsche
Volkswagen says its new battery system will have a range of 280 miles and a charging time of less than 25 minutes.
A car salesman discusses the new Volkswagen electric vehicle tech and what it means for VW, Audi, and Porsche owners.
TikTok user Driving with Jonathan (@drivingwithjonathan) posted a video with a breakdown of Volkswagen’s announcement earlier this week.
In the video, Jonathan says, “Volkswagen has announced that they’re going to come out with this new EV unified technology across their lineup. It’s not just Volkswagen; it also includes Audi and Porsche too.”
What Is Volkswagen’s New EV Tech?
“The new solid state technology that they’re going to be using can charge from 10% to up to 80% in less than 25 minutes,” Jonathan says. “Being able to use the same technology across the entire lineup is actually going to reduce their cost, streamline their production, and hopefully be able to pass those cost savings onto the consumer.”
Jonathan wants to know whether this development would win over any EV skeptics. “Let me know in the comments,” he says. “If they get the EV charging fast enough and they increase the range far enough and they make them more affordable, would you switch to EV over the internal gas engine?”
Volkswagen’s Solid State Battery Tech
InsideEVs reported earlier this summer that Volkswagen’s $5 billion deal with Rivian would result in big changes for the German automaker. That means EV models from Volkswagen—and presumably sister brands Audi and Porsche—will use the same software platform as the Rivian R2.

That’s not the only move Volkswagen is making in terms of technology. Last week, the company announced that its solid-state battery technology is ready for series production. The battery system will have a range of 280 miles (450 km) and a charging time of less than 25 minutes. Volkswagen plans to use these batteries in the majority of its EV brands across regions.
Viewers React To The Volkswagen News
In the comments, viewers expressed skepticism that the news will mean direct savings for the consumer.
“Great idea if you have too much money,” wrote one person. “VW has been circling the drain for years.”
“So if there is a manufacturing defect down the road, it will affect all their vehicles,” guessed a second user. “Nice. And no, I have no interest in an EV.”
“They will never pass the savings onto the consumer,” said a third person. “They’ll keep the price high to keep their margins high, which will make the shareholders happy—not the consumers.”
InsideEVs contacted Jonathan via TikTok comment and direct message for comment.
