A woman posted a video claiming she was kicked out of the self-driving car service Waymo. Viewers say she’s not alone.

On Oct. 18, a woman (@user245618862) posted a video of her and her friends dancing. Above the video is a text overlay that reads, “That moment when three girls get kicked out the Waymo.”

While she provided no additional context, many comments under the video shared their stories, claiming that they have undergone similar experiences with Waymo. “This literally happened to me last night,” wrote one commenter.

“I got kicked out for hitting my pen,” commented another user.

Why Might A Waymo Passenger Be Asked To Exit The Vehicle?

It is not unprecedented that Waymo users have claimed to be removed from their vehicle, as Inside EVs previously reported when one passenger reportedly had stuck her head and one arm outside of the vehicle.

It appears that the two primary reasons that passengers are removed from a vehicle are because of rider conduct that Waymo determines violates its rules or because of operational or safety events that force the vehicle to stop. Based on the information provided in the video, it is unclear why these specific passengers were told to leave the vehicle.

While Waymo’s terms do not explicitly state that riders will be removed from the vehicle for violating rules, they have stated that violating certain rules “may affect your account standing and lead to a loss of ride privileges.”

The self-driving service has also listed extensive rules, many of which may cause riders to face certain consequences. These include not touching the sensors, not sitting in the driver’s seat, not smoking or vaping, and not consuming drugs or alcohol in the car.

Can A Passenger Be Asked To Leave The Vehicle For Operational Reasons?

Additionally, it is possible that the vehicle might have operational issues that may result in passengers being asked to exit the vehicle.

Waymo states that its “autonomous driving system is designed to be cautious and defensive,” which can lead the vehicle to safely stop driving. They also state that “no matter the reason, we’ll reach out immediately and send someone to help if needed.”

What do you think?

It does appear that in this case, Waymo will most likely provide immediate support and an alternative. “If your ride stops unexpectedly, stay in the car with your seat belt fastened,” states Waymo’s policy. “In the event of a collision, please stay in the car with your seat belt fastened, unless there is an urgent need to exit. Please don’t touch any controls inside the car, like the steering wheel, accelerator, or brake pedal. Support will reach out soon, but you can always get help using the in-car screen or the app at any time.”

Inside EVs has reached out to @user245618862 via TikTok DM and Waymo via email for further comment.
