‘It Looks Like A Bop It’: Florida Woman Buys Hyundai Ioniq 9. Then She Shows Off This Unprecedented Feature
The Ioniq 9 doesn’t have a traditional gear shifter like you’d find on most automatic vehicles.
A car enthusiast points out what she views as the most “interesting” feature of her new Hyundai Ioniq9.
TiKTok user Amanda Cline (@drivevibeswithamanda) is an automotive journalist trying out the new Hyundai Ioniq9. In a video posted earlier this week, Cline reveals her love-hate relationship with the placement of the start/stop button.
“The Honda Iconiq 9 has a very interesting PRNDL,” Cline says to start the video.
Can You Find Ioniq 9’s Start/Stop Button?
The Ioniq 9 doesn’t have a traditional gear shifter like you’d find on most automatic vehicles. Instead, its start/stop button is on the left side of the rotary shift lever, which is what Cline is referring to as the “PRNDL.” When drivers press down on the brake and hit the start/stop button, the Ioniq9 turns on and is ready to go.
“The most interesting thing here is that your start and stop/button is actually on the PRNDL here. I saw someone on YouTube say it looks like a Bop It.”
A photo of the popular children’s toy momentarily pops up on the screen. Then, Cline demonstrates exactly why the comparison is so spot on. The end of the lever swivels up and down, allowing drivers to choose a driving mode.
“So to put it in reverse, you’re gonna go like this, flick it that way,” Cline says. “It does vibrate when you do that. And then the cameras come on automatically, and then to put it in drive. Then to put it in park, we’re going to go over here and press this button.”

Cline says she’s a fan of many of the Ioniq 9’s features, but this is definitely one that she’s ambivalent about. “And it’s not exactly easy to see,” she adds. “It seems kind of not conveniently located. It’s kind of conveniently located for your hand, but otherwise it’s kind of hidden.”
Drivers Weigh In On the Ioniq 9’s PRNDL
She asks her viewers if they would expect to find the start/stop button there. “Would you think to turn on a car right here when you’re just like sitting in here?” she says. “I wouldn’t, but maybe that’s just me. “
In the comments section of the video, one person noticed an interesting typographic occurrence. “Why does your car have a DNR?” the user joked, referring to a “Do Not Resuscitate" document.
Although the start/stop placement is different, the Ioniq 5 features a similar rotary shifter. A 2022 Limited driver posted to Reddit two years ago to reveal that the shifter knob on his vehicle popped off. Fortunately, he was able to hold it in place and get the car to shift gears that way.
In a statement to InsideEVs, Cline wrote, "The start/stop button on the Ioniq 9 is in a unique place for sure. It was a bit weird at first but after driving for a few days, it is easy to get used to. You can turn the car on and get into gear pretty much in one swift motion. Automakers have gradually been moving the gear shifts out of the central tunnel between the two seats, so this isn’t that out of the ordinary. It also frees up a ton of storage space between the seats! The Ioniq 9 is a really cool EV and I've enjoyed it overall!"
