BMW will begin local production of the iX5's high-voltage battery at its newly opened Plant Woodruff in South Carolina. The 144 kWh pack will be made by about 300 human workers and 250 robots, with high-level precision using virtual reality and AI to iron out errors during the process. Despite a down year for EV sales in the U.S., the automaker continues to invest in the future, including introducing new models and bringing battery production in-house. The iX5 will be one of the longest-range EVs in the U.S. when it goes on sale early next year. It will get a bunch of Neue Klasse-derived technologies, including the Gen6 cylindrical cells and the Heart of Joy supercomputer.
