A woman says she utilized Tesla’s 48-hour test drive policy to check out the automaker’s Los Angeles-based diner and charging lot. A TikTok user who goes by @lonespov shared her test drive/diner experience online.

While her video sparked varied responses from folks on the quality of the Tesla Diner and the manufacturer’s EVs, it also raised a question folks thinking about purchasing a Tesla may have: Does Tesla actually let people test drive its cars for two days?

Can You Really Borrow a Tesla For 48 Hours?

Lonespov begins her clip with footage of her getting out of a Tesla and plugging it into a charger. “Did you know that you can test drive a Tesla for 48 hours? So I borrowed the car and I took it down to the Tesla Diner. Look how many charging stations there are,” she says, recording the numerous spaces outfitted with charging ports in the Tesla diner parking area.

Tesla's website indicates that it offers three test drive experiences: regular, 24 hours and 48 hours. However, when InsideEVs attempted to schedule anything other than a “regular” timed test drive, the latter options were grayed out at three separate Northern New Jersey locations. Furthermore, trying to schedule a 24- or 48-hour test drive two weeks out yielded similar results. This also applied to scheduled test drives at Louisville, Ky., Greenwood, Ind. and Indianapolis Castelon, Ind. locations.

And if you were thinking of emulating the video and wanted to take a Tesla out for a spin for the full Tesla Diner experience, you might be in for disappointment. InsideEVs also tried booking 24- and 48-hour test drives in Southern California locations Century City, Sherman Oaks-Fashion Square Mall and Pasadena-Colorado Boulevard but still couldn’t pin down anything other than a regularly timed test drive.

It appears that there are others online who also had their 48-hour test drive plans thwarted, like this Reddit user who posted to the site’s r/TeslaLounge sub lamenting how their prebooked, 48-hour test drive was reduced to just 30 minutes.

Is The Tesla Diner Worth It?

Lonespov seemed happy with her Tesla test drive and visit to the 24-hour diner. In her clip, she films herself walking inside the metallic, retro-futuristic establishment. An employee shows off the dining menu, which includes a touchscreen kiosk, explaining that the eatery provides a self-service structure. “You pick up and then you sit wherever you like,” the worker tells her, pointing to an area where other customers are standing.

After being told the most popular item at the diner was the Tesla Burger, the TikToker orders it and some other fare for a total of $31.28. She taps her card to the kiosk screen and is handed two food items inside cardboard caddies in the shape of Cybertrucks, as well as a milkshake. She elects to dine on the outdoor patio area, giving her a clear view of a massive movie screen below.

“Everything here was $31. Let’s try our Strawberry milkshake,” she says before taking a gulp. “Super, super thick." One of the cardboard food carriers reveals what looks like an order of chili fries, and then she cracks open the other, which contains her Tesla Burger. After peeling the cheesy bun apart, viewers are given a gander at the burger’s contents: pickles, onions, shredded lettuce, and a smashed burger patty. "It's actually not bad," she says after a bite.

She says she’s also impressed with the Tesla Diner’s restroom area, pointing out its black tiling and the ambient, soft glow of its light fixtures.

After her visit, she thanks an employee who opens the door to the diner for her as she exits the premises. While walking back to the Tesla, she holds up the Cybertruck food caddy box and remarks that she’s going to keep it as a souvenir.

Commenters Sound Off

Replies to the social media post were mixed. “I would leave so quick,” one wrote. Another said that they were gobsmacked by the diner’s pricing: “$31 for a burger is diabolical.”

But one commenter thought otherwise: “$31 actually seems reasonably priced and a cool experience I would try this for sure,” another penned.

Another person had a positive reaction to seeing the food as well: “Wow Tesla burger looks so good,” they remarked.
