‘Tesla Is So Far Ahead’: Man Charges Tesla. Then He Discovers an Easter Egg When He Presses 10 Times
'Funny the first time.'
A Tesla driver showed off an Easter Egg folks can trigger when their car is charging. Brandon Conner (@hsvtesla) demonstrated how folks can add a flourish of color to their charging port’s icon while their EV gets juiced up. While some folks thought the functionality was cool, others knocked it as a cheap trick and knocked the brand.
Conner begins his video by recording the charging port of his white Tesla Model Y. The charger is plugged into the back of the vehicle, and he grabs its handle. “A little Tesla Easter egg. Press your charger 10 times and you’ll do a Rainbow Road mode,” he says.
Next, he taps the button located on the charger’s handle 10 times, which triggers the Tesla logo to flash a variety of different colors. As it does so, the Mario Kart Rainbow Road theme can be heard playing in Conner’s clip. “Kinda like your car does when you’re in full self driving if you have that option turned on. Just a pretty cool thing that Tesla’s do,” he says before the video comes to a close.
Tesla’s Rainbow Road Easter Egg
Like Conner mentions in his video, Rainbow Road mode isn’t just available on the Tesla’s charging port.
First, drivers must have purchased the brand’s full self driving software. Then, you’ll have to ensure that this feature has been turned on.
This can be done by heading to your car’s infotainment screen and selecting Controls. After tapping that, hit Autopilot and then toggling on Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Then, depending on which make and model of Tesla that you have, you’ll have to enable Autopilot. To do this, drivers can engage the feature by double tapping on the stalk located behind their steering wheel stalk.
Or, commuters can press the right scroll wheel if their vehicle doesn’t have a stalk. This driver demonstrates how to enable the feature in a Tesla Model 3 with a stalk and full self-driving. He can be seen double-tapping the stalk. Once the car’s Autopilot’s been engaged, he taps the stalk five times in succession. Instantly, the graphic on his infotainment screen shows the visualization of the lane he’s driving in light up in a chorus of different rainbow colors.
Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper” can be heard playing in the background, with the track’s iconic cowbell noise reverberating throughout the cabin.

Furthermore, the audio integrates Christopher Walken’s line from the memorable Saturday Night Live clip involving the classic rock tune. The actor’s voice plays over the track, “I gotta have more cowbell!” to round out the gag.
Not Everyone Wants More Cowbell In Their Tesla
While the aforementioned Tesla driver and Conner seem to appreciate this Rainbow Road functionality, others aren’t as amused. For instance, a Reddit user opined on the misery they’ve endured as a result of accidentally engaging Rainbow Road when they were just trying to go on with their commute.
They wrote that they couldn’t figure out how to turn Rainbow Road mode off while using Autopilot.
“Kinda funny the first time I did this last year but after it played on single track repeat, I was [expletive],” they said. In their frustration, they attempted a litany of different methods to disable the Rainbow Road Easter egg, but were incessantly subjected to hearing the track play over and over again. “Muting the radio, turning down volume, turning on Spotify or the radio didn’t stop the track from playing over and over again,” they told other users on the site.
In order to finally disable it, they said that they had to pull over and turn the car off to stop it. “Funny once. Annoying every time afterwards. How can I disable this?” they asked other Redditors.
Commenters who responded to his clip didn’t provide a solution, but rather asked why they were inadvertently toggling it on in the first place. But some seemed to understand the Tesla owner’s ire, stating that repeatedly hitting the stalk to enable Autopilot is a common occurrence. “Y’all never had autopilot not activate when you pull down twice? So you hear a dumb ding ding ding sound because it failed to activate for whatever reason. No lane lines, not available at this time, etc etc. so you pull down twice again, then Mr. Rainbow comes on,” one of the Reddit users remarked.
Another Tesla driver was alarmed by the Rainbow Road feature, as they weren’t aware that their Tesla had this Easter egg. They shared a photo of the glistening on-screen road in this Tesla Motors Club post. One of the site’s user’s replied that Rainbow Road mode was engaged by “press[ing] the drive stalk down four times in a row.”
While there were some who seemed to enjoy the feature in the forum, others, like the aforementioned Redditor, seemed to find the Easter egg bothersome. One person wrote that to disengage it, drivers simply have to press down on the stalk again or hit the “X” icon on their touchscreen.
Others mentioned that Rainbow Road could be toggled on in their Tesla’s Toy Box settings on the infotainment menu. One person highlighted that “Rainbow All The Time” is also in the settings. This option allows the multi-colored lane to be displayed on their driving display. But it doesn’t play “Don’t Fear the Reaper” so commuters can have a cowbell-less experience.
More Tesla Easter Eggs
The popular EV manufacturer has outfitted its vehicles with a slew of secret, whimsical Easter eggs drivers can enjoy. If you touch the battery icon when your Tesla has 121 miles (or kilometers) of range, folks are treated to a Back to the Future reference. Of course, you can enable Santa Mode, which turns your Tesla into a sleigh on the infotainment display. There’s Mars Rover and Starship themes you can put on your infotainment system, too.
Furthermore, drivers can activate Monty Python skits to emit from their Tesla’s speaker system. The Model X had a light show accompanied by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s holiday theme, too.
If your Tesla has an air suspension package, you can trigger a James Bond Easter egg which shows your vehicle become a submarine version of the Lotus Esprit bond drives in The Spy Who Loved Me. Also, beneath the frunk of the Model 3, there’s also a “Superbottle” caricature drawn onto the part of the same name. It features an image of a bottle that’s made to look like a superhero. Spaceballs fans will also appreciate how Tesla’ Ludicrous speed option is activated when they switch on over from “sport” mode to “Ludicrous.” This animation resembles the ludicrous speed option in the beloved Sci-Fi comedy.
And This Is Spinal Tap fans will enjoy that Tesla’s climate control settings allow drivers to pump their fans all the way up to 11.
Commenters Sound Off
A slew of TikTok users took to the comments section for the opportunity to decry Teslas. “Still not enough to convince me to buy one,” one person quipped.
Another wrote, “does it dispense period pads.”
While one person thought that this was proof Teslas aren’t fun vehicles. “You know how you’ve got a boring car. When you spend more time staring at an electrical outlet,” they said.
“Probably won't help with sales!” one TikTok user penned.
But there were others who seemed to enjoy the functionality. One TikToker remarked that they thought the feature was “dope.”
Another wrote, “love this.”
Someone else said that they were able to successfully engage the charger port Rainbow Road. However, they were disappointed to not hear the accompanying music that was playing in Conner’s video. “I just went to do it I thought it was going to do the music but the light is cool too,” they said.
InsideEVs has reached out to Conner via Instagram DM for further comment.
