Because the Model S/X are equipped with a charging inlet based on the Type 2 AC, they were able to use 1- or 3-phase Type 2 plugs or take DC fast charging at Superchargers. The use of CHAdeMO or CCS Combo 2 plugs requires an adapter.
However, there is a catch. The adapter can be used only for S/X manufactured from May 1, 2019, while the older cars need to additionally be retrofitted for €500 (including adapter).

Charging power using the adapter will be limited at 120 kW.
In the case of the Tesla Model 3, the car is equipped with a CCS inlet and can take 1- or 3-phase Type 2 plugs or CCS 2 DC plugs without an adapter, as well as retrofitted Superchargers with CCS 2 DC plugs. Tesla already gradually retrofitted all of its Supercharging stations in Europe with plugs for the CCS Combo 2-compatible inlet on the Tesla Model 3.
The CHAdeMO adapter for Model S/X is more costly (some €500+) and offers up to 50 kW charging capability. As the European market shifts towards CCS and most of the stations have both CCS and CHAdeMO plugs, Tesla probably will stick with CCS.
Can all Tesla owners use the Supercharger network in Europe?
Yes, the Supercharger network is available to all Model S, Model X and Model 3 owners. All V2 Supercharger sites in Europe have dual cable posts to enable charging for both Combined Charging System Combo 2 (CCS Combo 2) and DC Type 2 connectors. European Model 3 models are directly compatible with CCS Combo 2 connectors. European Model S and Model X are directly compatible with DC Type 2 connectors and can access CCS Combo 2 connectors with the use of a CCS Combo 2 adapter. Please note, European Model 3s are not compatible with DC Type 2 connectors.
Do the Model S and Model X have access to third-party charging networks?
Model S and Model X owners may use a CCS Combo 2 adapter to connect to compatible third-party networks. Model 3 can directly plug into third-party networks using CCS Combo 2 connectors.
How do I know if my Model S or Model X has the technical capability to charge via a CCS Combo 2 adapter?
All Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles produced after May 1, 2019 have the technical capability to charge at CCS Combo 2 charging sites with the use of a CCS Combo 2 adapter.
I have a Model S or Model X produced before May 1, 2019. Can I take advantage of CCS Combo 2 charging?
All legacy Model S and Model X owners will require a service retrofit in order to take advantage of CCS Combo 2 charging via adapter. You may schedule a service retrofit for June 1, 2019 or later at your local Tesla service center via your Tesla mobile app or your Tesla account.

CCS Combo 2 retrofit service will cost €500, including the cost of a CCS Combo 2 adapter (€170 when purchased separately).
What is the peak charge rate I can receive with a CCS Combo 2 adapter?
All Model S and Model X owners can currently receive the highest current peak charge rates offered by V2 Supercharging in Europe (120kW). We will continue to validate this technology as part of the V3 Supercharger rollout and will provide additional information regarding peak charge rates as it is available.
