The BMW iX4 Is An Electric X4 With Over 400 Miles Of Range

BMW’s first-ever iX4 electric crossover almost matches the iX3's ridiculous 434-mile range.

  • BMW has revealed the iX4 electric crossover.
  • Based on the same underpinnings as the iX3, it features a coupe-like silhouette and comes standard with the M Sport package.
  • Despite similar dimensions and an identical powertrain, the iX4 delivers a slightly shorter range than its more traditional sibling.

The first-ever BMW iX4 is here, and it promises a little more sportiness and a longer driving range than the already impressive iX3, all while flaunting the same coupe-like body style that has long defined the X4 and X6.

It’s a design that spurred plenty of controversy back when BMW introduced the original X6, which kick-started the crossover coupe craze. Now, it’s pretty much widely accepted, with plenty of automakers going down this route to try and capture a wider audience.

Despite being almost identical on paper, the iX4 offers slightly less driving range than a comparable iX3. BMW says the iX4 50 xDrive, the first version to land in the United States, delivers up to 428 miles. That's six miles less than the iX3 50 xDrive, despite the two models using the same 112.2-kilowatt-hour battery and 463-horsepower dual-motor setup. (In Europe, the battery is rated at 108.7 kWh, but they're in fact identical.)

The maximum DC charging power is 400 kilowatts, just like on the longest-range iX3, and a 10-minute session will result in up to 183 miles added, which is just one mile short compared to the iX3 50 xDrive. On AC power, the iX4 comes standard with a 15.4 kW on-board charger.

After the first trim launches in March 2027, BMW will offer a more powerful iX4 that blurs the line between a proper M car and a traditional SUV. The iX4 M60 xDrive will be powered by the same 112.3 kWh battery pack as the iX4 50 xDrive, but the power output goes up to 603 hp, enabling a 0-to-60 miles per hour sprint in 3.7 seconds.

The sporty coupe-shaped SUV will come standard with the Adaptive M Suspension, sport steering, and a limited-slip rear differential. BMW didn't provide a range figure for the M60, but it's expected to be less than the tamer, non-M-ified variant.

In Europe, a more affordable BMW iX4 40 xDrive will go on sale alongside its more powerful and longer-range brothers. Sporting a slightly smaller-capacity 82.6 kWh battery and a detuned 368 hp all-wheel-drive powertrain, its WLTP range comes in at 396 miles (638 km), while the maximum DC charging power is limited to 300 kW. According to BMW, this version of the iX4 can add up to 187 miles (301 km) of WLTP range during a 10-minute charging session.

The raked roof might look cool, but rear passenger space and the cargo volume have to suffer because of the design. The European iX4’s trunk has 17.3 cubic feet (490 liters) of space with the rear seats in their upright position, a figure that can be increased to 56.5 cu ft (1,600 l) by folding down the rear seats. Compared to the iX3, the iX4 has 1 cu ft less space in the trunk with all seats in place, but the front trunk’s capacity is identical, at roughly 2 cu ft. We'll see how the U.S. numbers look, but it's clear that the coupe-SUV will be a little less practical.

Speaking of dimensions, the iX4 shares the same length, width, and wheelbase as the iX3, coming in at 188.3 inches, 74.6 inches, and 114 inches. Where the iX4 is different is in height, measuring 63.3 in, or 1.5 in less than the iX3.

All iX4s come standard with a fixed glass roof and the M Sport package that includes specific design elements and 20-inch M-branded wheels. The M Sport braking system is also included and comes with blue brake calipers. The top-spec iX4 M60 xDrive ups the ante with 21-inch wheels, M Sport seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

Due to its Neue Klasse underpinnings, the new electric crossover gets a similar interior layout to the iX3 and i3. There’s a 17.9-inch central infotainment screen, a pillar-to-pillar slim display at the bottom of the windshield, a 3D head-up display, and an intelligent voice assistant based on Amazon's Alexa+ AI technology.

The iX4 supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) through the BMW Multifunction Charger, which has separate plugs for 120- and 240-volt outlets. To make use of the two features, BMW said owners will need to use different adapters, which will be sold separately.

What do you think?

With V2L, EVs can export energy from the main battery to power tools, appliances, or camping equipment, while V2H can power an entire household when the grid goes down. With V2G, the car can send power back to the grid, as long as the necessary hardware is installed.

The BMW iX4 will be assembled at BMW’s new factory in Debrecen, Hungary, alongside the iX3. U.S. pricing starts at $66,220, plus destination.
