Besides the Formula e Grand Prix in Long Beach, California this weekend, there was also a BMW sponsored i3 gathering.

I signed up the last minute on the day before, but was so glad I attended. It was neat to be at the biggest gathering of i3 enthusiasts I have ever seen. Although it most likely didn’t break the record recently set in Germany, this was most certainly the biggest i3 gathering in the United States.

The Formula e was a surprisingly impressive event. There was much more crowd interest in this event than from events attended prior.

Long Beach is a beautiful city, and it was a bonus to have such beautiful weather on Saturday. It’s our hope that electric car racing brings even more positive awareness to the public perception of electric cars.

Editor’s Note:  Besides hosting the Formula E, and this BMW gathering, the event was title sponsored by Faraday Future, who brought not only their Concept racer – the FFZERO1, but also a teaser design sketch of a future EV thought to come to market in a “couple year’s” time out of the company’s Las Vegas assembly facility under construction now.

    Welcome to my city! LBC!

  2. MTN Ranger says:

So, is there an official count?

  3. WARREN says:

Well, I know there was way over 100. But nowhere near the 170+ record. An event like this makes you realize just how much space even 100 cars can take.

And that you should replace them with an 100 seat commuter bus 🙂

  4. Tonic says:

Great event! So happy to be a part of it (#54). My understanding we were between 30 to 40 shy of the record.

  5. SparkEV says:

I wonder if Qualcomm sponsorsed EV has CCS, probably not for charging but for concept. QC makes GreenPhy chips that can be used for CCS protocol.

    Warren,

Great story and pics. I especially like the last pic where you caught the guy wearing his Faraday Future gear (t-shirt and baseball hat) standing in front of the Faraday Future banner/booth. A closer look reveals that it appears to be homemade Faraday Future gear, unless Adidas is a co-sponsor of the event.

But I’d really like to know how the repairs went to the back of your i3 from the accident: all the trails, tribulations, and repair costs? Hopefully, you’re fully recovered and not suffering from any lingering injuries.

Also, what the heck is on the end of your rear wiper blade in the #96 pic above? It kind of looks like a seed pod or butterfly cocoon.

      It’s a leaf…

      1. sven says:

Doh! After reading your comment it looks obvious, a leaf. Before, it didn’t look flat; the highlights made it look rounded to me like a peanut. Thanks!

  7. Dennis says:

I think the count was 132
    I was car number #13

  8. Gary says:

Warren, well it looks like you were able to get your i3 repaired in time for this event. How much work and cost went into repairing the rear hatch on your i3? I’ve heard others say their i3’s sit at body shops for weeks while parts come from Germany.

  9. Phil says:

Actually, the BMW drive event took place in the morning, long BEFORE the race, and actually before practice and qualifying laps took place.
We got onto the track about 9:15 am.
It was really good fun and the comarraderie and vibes were very sympatico.
The Faraday clothing gear was not homemade, but rather given as perks for filling out a questionnaire.

    1. Jay Cole says:

      Hey Phil,

Thanks for pointing that out. Of course it was before. That is my error as I set the title for the author’s (Warren) piece. /fixed
