Within 18 Months, GM To Launch 2 New Electric Cars Based Off Bolt Tech

Even if the next-generation Chevy Bolt isn’t coming until 2025, we’ll at least have two other General Motors’ offerings based on Bolt tech to hold us over.

Ken Kelzer, GM’s vice president of global vehicle components and subsystems, provide the keynote address to the SAE International WCX World Congress Experience in Detroit earlier this week. Kelzer made several comments related to electric cars and zero-emissions driving, but one revelation that largely got buried by the press was that over the next 18 months, GM will launch 2 new electric vehicles based off lessons learned for today’s Chevy Bolt.

We’re fairly certain that one of those two vehicles will be the performance electric crossover, of which info recently leaked out on.

The other vehicle remains mostly a mystery, though we’d hope for it to be a larger family sedan or perhaps even an SUV.

Kelzer added that GM will have at least 20 pure electric vehicles on the market by 2023, though ICE will still be around.

When asked about combustion engines, Kelzer commented:

“It’s not like we’re leaving internal combustion engines behind — we’re working on both. Depending on what’s going to happen with government regulation and consumer acceptance, that’s when we’re going to find out.”

“Everyone in the industry is working to make internal combustion engines more efficient.”

Of course, no electric car discussion is complete without talk of charging infrastructure, which has seen very little support from GM. Kelzer didn’t reveal any new plans by GM to install chargers. Instead, he commented on standards, stating:

“In fact, the majority of the industry has embraced this standard (J1772), meaning customers don’t need to carry different plug cords to charge their vehicle. Imagine if we all created our own size fuel filler what that would have done to the customer base.”

The Buick Bolt (likely the Buick Enspire debuting in Shanghai later this month) is likely one of those BEVs. An “all-electric performance Chevy CUV” has also been leaked from a dealer meeting. I wonder if that is the other one. Come on AWD Bolt SS! 😀

I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it would require a major redesign of the rear end of the Bolt to put a second motor back there. Seems unlikely for a niche within a niche vehicle. My guess this performance EV will still be FWD sadly if it is to be based on the Bolt.

i really did like the Enspire. Hope it will be put into production for sure. As for the Chevy Bolt – it’s a nice city car. The real struggle is with the electric SUVs.

The Bolt EV won’t need a new gen anytime soon but it does need better financing and upgrades like better seats and adaptive cruise control to compete with the Leaf.

My only hope is that these two new EVs are offered in North America, and not just some China offering. That bit of detail isn’t clear yet.

Well, it will go nicely with our Chinese made everything else. Don’t worry, it will proudly wear the “Imagined in the USA, accomplished in China” sticker so common now. I actually bought some expensive light fixtures for my house that actually had stickers on them that proudly declared- “Hand crafted in China” Talk about spin!!

It’s already here: it’s called the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid.

And to think: Johann (ev-hater) DeNysschen (current head of Cadillac Division) Killed the ELR after basically 1 year of production (9 months in 2014, 0 in 2015 and 3 months in 2016) , when it sold at least 10 TIMES better than the CT6 PHEV, which ain’t breaking any records in China, either – where it is made.

Reason for the poor sales:

1). Drives like a BOAT (same as all of Cadillac’s other Sluggish Sedans).

2). Extremely inefficient – Rube Goldberg (Crazy Clock, Mousetrap) power train. (EG: 3 planetary gearsets, umpteen number of clutches, and a 3 horsepower electric oil pump to make the thing constantly change modes).

– end result – same size battery as the new VOLT, (but takes up the good trunk space here) only gets you around 22 miles of electric range, whereas many volt owners report getting 70 miles with the same size battery.

3). Other intangibles – the ELR looked, per one teenager I spoke with, like a rocket ship ( – in other words, distinctive styling), whereas the CT6 although larger and practical for 5-6 adults, looks like an ‘old-man’s’ car.

The good news is that in 2025 we’ll only be a couple of decades away from a built-out network of CCS fast charging stations. I’m so glad that GM and legacy auto aren’t wasting their money on this; somebody else’s job to make a fuelling station for our cars. Who wants to drive from city to city anyways?

In the meantime, let’s keep pouring billions into developing an engine to improve it by a percent or two. That’s what I call smart investment.

Conclusion: GM ain’t serious about EVs, and we have unlimited time to make the changeover to electric. 2050? They might be ready for that. If we’re still alive.

Overall though, though 18 month time period gives more hint that they are limited by battery production until model year 2020.

I don’t care what charging standard the use. Until the charging rate gets close to 100 kw/hr it isn’t practical to travel with an electric car.

Let’s see what GM can deliver in the way of tomorrow’s desired products. An SUV like the Rivian R1S with it’s range and load capacity. Or the soon to be revealed and showcased Model Y.
