Wink, Wink: Infiniti LE to Have Greater Range than LEAF, Built In the USA, and Coming Late 2016 (Update)

Sometimes when a new car comes onto the scene, all the information is laid out neat and tidy in a press release, as was the case with the Nissan LEAF. Other times, very little is known about the car, other than its name and perhaps a blurry artist rendition, as is the case whenever there is a new generation of the Corvette on the way.

Then there is a third type of a reveal, which is every auto journalist’s nightmare.  When the knowledge that a particular car is coming long in advance of its debut, and while waiting on an ‘official confirmation’, sometimes for years, you are peppered with tidbits of information, nudges from people associated with the development of the car, and winks from spokespeople.

UPDATE (June 2013/June 2014):  It appears the that Nissan has decided to wait to debut the Infiniti LE until the 2nd generation of the LEAF gets closer.  Look for the LE to bow in 2016.

Infiniti LE’s Comfortable Interior, No LEAF Here

If ever a car fits the third category, it is the Infiniti LE.

And I can’t stand it any longer. There is just too many little bits of paper on my desk about this car. Besides that, this site needs to have Infiniti landing page with more than just clip art, and we believe readers should not only get to read official press releases, but should know what is happening with a vehicle behind the scenes beforehand.

So first lets run the timeline:

2nd Generation Battery Technology:

  • Back in late 2009, the Nikkei (sub) reported that AESC (which is Nissan’s JV supplier of lithium batteries for its cars) was already working on the next generation of packs. Specifically NMC packs, which is just a short way of saying a battery using a nickel manganese cobalt oxide cathode. Basically, this second generation of battery has nearly double the electric capacity of the cells currently found in the LEAF, for about the same cost. Nutshell: More range, less weight. They estimated at the time, that it should be ready by 2015

Infiniti to Have an All Electric EV:

  • March 23rd, 2010: Top Gear (of all people) is talking with the head of Infiniti, and the topic of EVs comes up. For some reason the executive deems this a pretty good opportunity to casually mention that an all-electric Infiniti is on its way, but not until at least after 2014….when the second generation of batteries is ready to go

Blurry sketches and Focus Groups:

  • For the next year and a half, Nissan/Infiniti kept pretty quiet about the whole thing. Following suit, AESC (battery supplier) decided ‘silent running’ was the way to go, but behind the scenes both companies are working hard. In the US, focus groups are organized to get a feel for what the luxury EV buyer potentially may want. The first ‘fuzzy’ sketch is released. Surveys about esthetics ensued.

Concept debut:

  • Early April 2012: Infiniti finally gets around to debuting the ‘concept’ electric vehicle, complete with a list of all the things the production version will have…and a list of what the concept has.

…now lets fill in the ‘gray’ blanks behind the scenes as we understand them:

Sometime in early 2010, AESC did complete work on the NMC cells, and then starting doing validation and testing. At the same time, Nissan starting make hard plans for the vehicle, and did studies to maximize this technology on the Infiniti version of the LEAF platform. It would seem that at some point Nissan decided that a real world range of about 120-130 miles would be the minimum sweet spot for the new Infiniti if it were to bow today, (while putting it inline with the entry level, 40 kWh version of the Tesla Model S), and then sought out validation from focus groups…which it mostly got, although people always want more.

However, when the concept car debuted at the New York auto show, what followed it was just about the most carefully worded press release ever seen. Nissan took great pains to express the things the production model would definitely have:

Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore said: “…most of what you see in the LE Concept will become a reality, including its zero emission powertrain, advanced telematics, cutting-edge design, advanced connected services and premium appointments,” while also taking the time to highlight the cars .25 cd aerodynamics, wireless charging technology, and Infiniti specific sedan appearance.

But what wasn’t included in the laundry list of “what you will see” was the battery pack or estimated range. Noted late in the press release and with a specific disclaimer was this:

“The Infiniti LE Concept’s battery system is a proven laminated 24 kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) design with a ChaDeMo DC50kW quick charger

Now letting people think at the time that the LE was going to have the LEAF’s 24 kWh pack, and likely less than its 73 miles (EPA) of range, borders on the obscene.  Who would want such a thing at probably $15,000-20,000 more?   However, we should note that this is the company that gave life to the ugliest, and worst selling vehicle  you can find on a new car dealer’s lot today.  The Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet (click here if you dare).

Not only batteries where on tap for non-disclosures.   While talking to Infiniti spokespeople at the NY auto show, none would confirm the production location of the car officially, but that would not hinder an off the record, friendly nudge-nudge and wink, pointing to Nissan’s upcoming electric vehicle assembly factory in Smyrna, TN.  Logically, considering the entire brand was, at one time, a USA-specific nameplate, and that most of Infiniti’s sales are still US based, this just makes a lot of sense.  Why they just can’t say that?  I don’t know.

I should note that before going to press with all these random bits of cobbled together pieces of information, I decided to contact Infiniti about the car…just in case I could get lucky with some kind of confirmation on any (or all) of the subject matter. Generally, this is done by email, as we then don’t interrupt each other’s busy day, and I had expected to receive a courteous ‘no comment’.

Instead, I got an invitation from Kyle Bazemore, Senior Manager at Infiniti Communications, to speak with him over the phone about the car. It was explained later that this was easier to just talk things through this way. It also avoids writing things down, and allows for some “well, we haven’t confirmed that yet, but you might be right” moments.

Long story short, Mr. Bazemore is a nice fellow, we had a pleasant chat, despite the piece we just wrote about his new boss.  He represents the brand very well, while still clearly following the mandate to not divulge anything too epic about the Infiniti LE.  However, over the course of the conversation he did say that given new technologies and processes, the Infiniti LE, while larger than the LEAF, will be somewhat lighter than that car’s 3,366lbs, and that he expected production on the Infinti LE to “begin in 15 to 18 month’s time.”  Update:  Plans changed – (late) 2016 is new debut year for the LE to be built alongside the 2nd gen LEAF

So, in the end, I guess we do have something official….and I get to clean off my desk.

Now here is a car I would get if it was priced in the low 40s, 120-130 miles of real range would be that little bit xtra I need

I think you are kidding yourself if you think it will be priced anywhere under the mid $50K range.

But only time will tell………….

MO…I don’t like the front grill. An EV’s front grill should slice through the air like the wing on a jet.


We tend to agree. The consensus around here is that it is too busy, has too much bling/chrome.

As a LEAF 3-year leaser, which is up in June 2014, I had been looking forward to the reveal of the Infiniti LE for a long time. I have to say I was very underwhelmed…

100 kW motor (80 kW for LEAF, 290 kW for Model S)
Same battery pack as the LEAF
Styling arguably worse than the LEAF (What was wrong with the Emerg-E styling cues?)
Front wheel drive? (maybe I am confused on this)

At this point, I think I would rather eat Ramen noodles for the next two years and buy a Model S. Hopefully they will make some improvements between now and production.

agree with you on your points, but this article is saying that one of your items has been fixed as the infiniti wont have the leafs pack, but a much larger one when it goes into production

From this article I see the range increase coming from cell improvement and weight savings. That implies not adding more cells than the 48 x 4 the LEAF carries. I have a hard time beleiving they will use a different cell chemistry between vehicle lines if they are tryinig to build economies of scale in their battery production.

I am struggling to find a link to the article, but I thought I remembered reading that the next gen LEAF would get a larger kWh pack and be due out sometime in 2014. That would conincide with being around the same time the Infiniti hits the market.

So the only thing that remains for extra range is the weight savings mentioned here, unless they design a new physical battery pack. The concept car used the same 48 module pack.

I was hoping they would differentiate the two vehicles more by gearing the Infiniti to performance i.e. rear wheel drive, 200+ kW motor, enhanced suspension, etc.

Naming contest: EVfinity

Statik, keep up the good work. I enjoy my Leaf that I have had for over 1 year now. Despite the fact that she enjoys the leaf as well,the wife tells me we will not get another one when our lease is up in 2014 unless it comes with a power driver seat and greater range. Hopefully the Infiniti model will have these features. I would rather stay with Nissan than go over to Tesla. Please Keep us posted on the development of the Infiniti.

On a separate matter, we are building a new home and I would like to prepare the garage floor so that we will be able to easily install wiring for induction charging by being able to run wiring under the floor rather than later installing it on top of the floor where one can trip over it. Is there any any information about preparing new home construction to build in piping under the floor for later wiring installation?

Thanks for the kind words Stan (and Shawn). Good timing on building. What you need as far as prep is pretty simple. Cord access to your inductive mat. You’ll of course need to run the wiring to operate a standard L2 charger when your building your garage. Then add a run of underlevel/concrete electrical tubing from the base of that wall, out onto your floor…and two cap plates (to make it pretty) The units run pretty much in three pieces. A wall status/operation kick plate (like a light switch), a main 240v wall mounted charging station, and the inductive charging mat…which is of course, connected via cord. (picture below). Unless you really enjoying backing into your driveway, or you already have determined the next car you are going to buy and hold onto forever, I suggest you run the tubing vertically down the length of your garage. Your going to need a run of at least 17 feet, with the first hole/cap beginning at least 5 feet (depending on the amount of sq. footage your have to work with) from obstacles/wall at the front area of where you project your car will sit, and then 12 feet of underground run,… Read more »

The EPA range has to be above 110 miles… Already the Leaf (73 miles) is being beaten in range by the Focus EV (76) and Honda Fit EV (80+)…. I think they have room for more battery pack units for the next Leaf too…
