Volvo says its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) found in the new T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain could contribute to eclipsing diesel production for the company in the future.

It is no secret that diesel emission standards are becoming ever more stringent, and the focus on the technology has been less than positive over the past year (to say the least).

The T5 set-up is to be used for the very first time in the new plug-in XC40 for 2017 (as well as two other future 40 series EVs in the future), and will offer better emission results than previous diesel offerings, while at the same time providing similar performance at a competitive price.

In short, the T5 uses Volvo’s new 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine and a new 7-speed dual clutch transmission, coupled to a 74 bhp electric motor for FWD.  An on-board battery stores some 9.7 kWh of energy.

Volvo expects that tougher diesel emissions standards, and the availability of new plug-in hybrids will lower the manufacturer’s diesel output significantly over time.

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said:

“It is a very attractive alternative to a diesel engine. It offers much lower CO2 levels but more or less the same performance in both horsepower and torque. On cost, I would say that within a couple of years, we will see a crossover, the diesel getting more expensive and the [hybrid system] going down.”

When asked if diesel cars will still be on sale in 10 years’ time, Samuelsson said: “Diesels will be more expensive. They will have much more advanced after-treatment, with additional fluids that have to be filled not once a year but probably every time you fill the car.

The writing is on the wall.
After so many improvement and still inadequate emission result, how come it does not appear loud and clear to everyone that diesel is a sinking ship.

Competitive price? How much more is the PHEV version going to be? Oh ya, a heck of a lot more!

It’s not the same. I’m currently diving a Prius, which is not very different from what Volvo is proposing. It is better than a diesel in town, and I love the CVT transmission, but in motorway driving it is still less efficient and much less powerful than a diesel car.

As for emissions, the only problem (which VW chose not to solve) is NOx. This is not limited to diesels, all efficient ICEs are affected. It’s just that diesel engines are still more efficient than petrol ones.

That is a problem with Prius, NOT a problem with the hybrid design.

Electric motor can match any diesels in terms of torque and instant response.

I’m sure BMW i8 or Tesla S would perform well but all hybrids or plugins I tried struggle at motorway speeds. They simply have not enough torque and power left for acceleration. In city driving (0-40mph) they all work much better. Even Prius is more than adequate.
