Back in mid-November, Motor Trend declared the 2015 Volkswagen Golf lineup as its “2015 Car of the Year.”

Should we care?  Well, for starters, that Golf lineup includes the  e-Golf, which Motor Trend commented on directly:

Weight reduction and improved engine efficiency have resulted in fuel economy gains for both the TSI and GTI models with their respective 1.8- and 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 gas engines. Even more impressive, Volkswagen has also included room in the lineup for diesel and electric versions of the Golf. The Golf TDI and its 2.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-four return an EPA combined rating of 36 mpg, while the e-Golf has an EPA-estimated range of 83 miles. The best part is that neither car is a penalty box to drive. What the TDI lacks in horsepower it mostly makes up for in torque. While it didn’t feel quite as quick as the TSI, it was no slouch for a C-segment car. No matter which Golf variant we jumped into, we emerged with smiles on our faces.

With several electric vehicles present at this year’s COTY event, the e-Golf was lauded for driving and feeling most like a “normal” car. Indeed, it’s tough to distinguish the e-Golf visually from its internal-combustion counterparts, inside or out. We also enjoyed the driving experience. The chassis feels as willing and playful as the other variants, while the electric motor provides an instantaneous 199 lb-ft of torque, rocketing the e-Golf forward. Best of all, interior and cargo room appear to suffer little thanks to clever battery packaging.

So, a lot of print was devoted specifically to the electric version of the Golf.

Though, as Motor Trend notes, several electric vehicle were present for the “Car of the Year” award, none but the e-Golf made the final cut to become an award contender finalist:

  • Ford Mustang
  • Honda Fit
  • Hyundai Genesis
  • Kia Sedona
  • Lexus RC
  • Maserati Ghibli
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I wonder if this was the last Car of the Year award for ICE car?

My predictions for the 2016 COTY is Tesla Model X, for 2017 Tesla Model 3, and for 2018 Nissan Infiniti LE.

Crossovers like the Model X compete in Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year.

Should have gone to the BMW i3.

No penalty box was a criteria

Uhh… And what penalty does the i3 have that the Golf EV doesn’t? The i3 is a much more capable EV, especially the Rex version. And considering the carbon fiber advancements, the i3 is much more technologically advanced.

It’s also $10,000 MSRP more expensive, has two midget rear doors, 40% less cargo space, no power seats, no leather like seats unless you want to pay 1400 for them, a stumpy car 10″ shorter where you can’t see the hood, only seats 4 etc

The carbon body is nice, but it can’t offset the many other drawbacks


I have not yet driven an e-Golf, but the i3 is certainly no penalty box. It is a blast to drive.

It does come with its own compromises, of course. With a higher price, seating for 4, less luggage space, and a quirky polarizing look, the i3 is less mainstream of a car than the e-Golf.

Not GTE PHEV Golf? Of all the versions of Golf, that one had potential to duke it out with Fusion and C-Max Energis and Volt.

eGolf is compliance, period. We won’t be discussing LEAF sales vs. eGolf. Like Focus Electric, it’s an iteration of an iteration of a popular top-selling ICE’d compact. I call these cars, “BFDEs” sarcastically, or Big Friggin’Deal Electrics”. This MT award is for Golf, not for eGolf.

I liken the e-Golf to the Civic Hybrid. Honda makes the Civic with multiple power trains (gas, hybrid and CNG). VW just took that a step farther.

10 years ago, Honda was certain that the reason hybrids weren’t selling well is because they weren’t enough like “normal” cars. So they tuned the Civic Hybrid (and later the Gen II Insight) to drive and behave like “normal” cars. We see how well that has worked out for them.

Through Nov, YTD sales:
Honda Civic Hybrid = 4,594
Honda Insight = 3,654
Toyota Prius = 113,977
Toyota Prius C = 37,731
Toyota Prius V = 28,478


I think even if VW/Ford pushed the e-Golf/Focus EV, they would never sell as well as the Leaf/Volt precisely BECAUSE they are tuned to look and feel like “normal” cars.

Group Quetion:

Why does this Brian guy keep promoting the 8-Track type technology while the Surging Global Electric Fueled Industry is pushing past Blue Ray Tech type vehicles?

The EGolf might be viewed by you as somewhat ‘humdrum’ but VW’s in general are popular with many.

The issue that haunts them is their reliability is horrible. Which is a shame, because the cars from the ’60’s were pretty good, and advertising at the time emphasizied:

1). What a great value the car was, and
2). What a substantial, well-built, serious product it was.

VW couldn’t run those ads today since many Americans would know they’re lieing.

Fortunately, they have FIAT (both the ones from decades ago, and the current models) to have such horrid reliability, that VW looks great by comparison.

I know Brian likes this car very much, but I wouldn’t touch it until its reliability is proven.
