Comparing Nissan LEAF and Volkswagen e-Golf sales in U.S. is risky, as the LEAF is the U.S.’ best-selling model (by volume), while the e-Golf entered the party late.

Even today, sales of the LEAF are over three times higher than e-Golf, despite the LEAF going backwards in sales volume this year.

But monthly sales are just one measure. When we take another look, we see that e-Golf, as a share of total sales for Volkswagen, actually has been closing in on the LEAF

The LEAF’s share out of all Nissan cars (excluding models categorized as trucks, which also includes SUVs) fell to 2% after peaking last year at 5.1%.

The e-Golf, on the other hand, hit a record of 1.3% among all Volkswagens (even including some SUVs) despite no being broadly available yet.

We suspect that the 2016 Nissan LEAF with a 107 mile option will once again widen this sales percentage gap, but VW is also just now introducing a new 2016 e-Golf model (the SE) priced under $30,000 and widening its distribution net.

e-Golf share in Golf family is expanding to already pretty nice 6.5%. That would be one per 15 Golfs.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the future e-Golf share, from October on, after the Diesel Gate scandal.

How many states and U.S. territories is each vehicle sold in? For many states eGolf is 0% of VW sales market volume, while LEAF has sales volume in all states, plus Guam, Puerto Rico, and other territories.

Production volume is a manufacturing metric, while sales tell a more clear story of customer driven traction and growth in the only marketplace the is pragmatic … on the local road(s).

VW could say we are selling EVs at a good price to make up for all those diesels.

I think this is just a factor of VW having relatively low sales volume before as a brand and how the e-Golf may match more with the product mix of the brand (I imagine VW sells drastically more hatchbacks as a percentage of its brand than Nissan does).

Well, the % will look even better now that VW can’t sell many diesels in US. Combined with Nissan’s SUV/crossover sales going up like crazy, the % will look even better for VW.

Only 22% of 2015 models were diesel. Currently effected 2015 VW models have a sales hold, and no 2016 model have been EPA approved.

It may take several months, depending on outcomes of multiple investigations.

So, this is all based on the assumption that VW is providing accurate information right?

I just leased an e-golf SEL in NJ. I love it, BUT let’s be honest. They are moving a few because they’ve priced them at why-the-heck-not numbers. The dealer/VW took 8k off the top of my $36,400 car and my total out of pocket costs are $9k for 3yr @ 7500mi/yr. Buyout is $13k or so.

My local(ish) 5 VW dealers appear to have moved 2 e-golfs between them in the past 2 months.

SWEET deal. The local Nissan dealers here in Northern Virginia are talking $20K total out of pocket (tax, tags, fees ect.) for a 3 year lease on a Leaf SV.

Well several commenters here at InsideEvs can rightly “Pat themselves on the Back”.

Things are transpiring almost exactly as many of you guys thought they would.

Just this morning, AutomotiveNews has stated re: VW

1). $1.1 Billion reduction in investment overall to pay for their Diesel ‘restitution’.

2). Introduction of an All Electric VW Phaeton, to be their FLAGSHIP product.

3). SCR (selective catalytic reduction) method to be emphasized on new New Diesel emission controls.

4). Emphasis on lower cost PHEV’s in general.

5). 300 km (186 mile) range of many lower cost all-electric models.

I’d say many of you preducted the future with this company pretty good! Congratulations.

I have a 2011 golf TDI, which is about paid off ( and has 100k miles on it).

Today, I leased an e golf, and kept the TDI for longer trips.

Vw have some unbelievable deals right now.
