Volkswagen re-energizes its push towards electrification in 2020 by debuting the I.D. Crozz II concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This high-style, compact crossover picks up on the cues from the earlier I.D. Crozz but gives it a more eye-catching two-tone color scheme of Hibiscus Red Metallic and a silver roof.

“Our task is to make modern technology available to many people. One thing is clear: The Golf of the future must once again be a people’s car,” Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess said.

Aesthetically, the Crozz II is largely a rehash of the original concept. VW fits new headlights that appear much cleaner because they no longer have the louver-like strips of LEDS. The two-tone paint really helps the design, particularly from the rear three-quarters perspective where the silver roof provides an attractive contrast over the red body to make things pop more.

The Crozz II continues to have a weird door layout with conventional hinges at the front and sliding ones at the rear. With no B-pillar in the way, this provides plenty of room to see into the cabin. VW even imagines that an owner could open them via voice commands.

VW imagines the I.D. Crozz II with a pair of electric motors – one at each axle – with a total of 302 horsepower (225 kilowatts). The layout allows for all-wheel-drive traction and a top speed of 112 miles per hour (180 kilometers per hour). The company estimates the compact CUV could go 311 miles (500 kilometers on a charge).

The automaker also claims that the concept could handle as sharply as the Golf GTI because of parts like electronically controlled dampers and a new multi-link rear suspension setup.

VW’s first production I.D. electric model will be a five-door hatchback in 2020. A road-ready interpretation of the I.D. Buzz van concept would join the lineup in 2022. The third vehicle in the range would be a crossover that would likely take inspiration from the Crozz II.

Wolfsburg/Frankfurt (D) – The countdown has begun for a breakthrough in electric mobility, and 2020 could represent the turning point. That is because the Volkswagen brand is accelerating into this new era by developing a new generation of innovative electric vehicles – the I.D.2, I.D. BUZZ3 and I.D.CROZZ4. Dr Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management, had this to say at the Volkswagen Group Night: “Our task is to make modern technology available to many people. This is especially important in times of technological transformation. One thing is clear: The Golf of the future must once again be a people’s car!”

Traditionally, Volkswagen hosts a Group Night event on the evening before the International Motor Show (IAA) opens in Frankfurt, at which it presents its innovative new products. On this occasion, the Volkswagen brand is presenting the I.D. CROZZ II in a world premiere. The further developed electric concept vehicle is part of the electric campaign in which Volkswagen will be expanding its electric car model range – initially with three models from 2020. I.D. CROZZ II is a crossover of an SUV and a four-door coupé, which has been further improved towards a production implementation. This can be seen, for instance, in various design changes to the front and rear ends of the concept car that is painted in ‘Hibiscus Red Metallic’. The I.D. CROZZ II makes a powerful and masculine impression with its wide bonnet, cleanly contoured wings and roof with a high-gloss black exterior finish. The striking design of the LEDs of the headlights also point the way towards production and generate an unmistakable light graphic.

The interior has also been re-equipped and further developed – as an Open Space – with a superior amount of space and highly versatile seating concept. B-pillars were omitted in the I.D. CROZZ II, so that the large swinging and sliding doors can be opened wide, and it is even possible to transport a crossbike without any trouble.

Always ensuring a supply of clean air in the interior, regardless of ambient conditions, is the CleanAir system that has been newly developed by Volkswagen. The menu provides information on the quality of the air in the car and on the system’s current activity. In addition, the I.D. CROZZ II is equipped with a new voice assistant, which enables opening and closing of the doors via voice command. It is also possible to activate or deactivate the fully automated driving mode ‘I.D. Pilot’ by voice instruction.

The I.D. CROZZ II is a sporty, zero-emission all-round vehicle that is designed to be interactive, and whose electric 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is as impressive on unpaved trails as it is in adverse weather conditions. One electric motor works at the front axle and one at the rear, and torque distribution is controlled via an ‘electric propshaft’. The driving range of the SUV that outputs 225 kW (system power) and boasts a top speed of 180 km/h is up to 500 kilometres (NEDC) on one battery charge. The high-performance battery can be charged to 80% of its energy capacity in 30 minutes using a fast-charging system.

An ideal weight distribution between the two axles is achieved by centrally integrating the battery within the I.D. CROZZ II and having the two drive system units at the front and rear. This enables the I.D. CROZZ II to demonstrate handling characteristics on a par with those of a Golf GTI. Playing a significant role here are the running gear with electronically controlled dampers, a new multi-link rear suspension design and also newly developed MacPherson struts.

The future generation of the I.D. family will extend the Volkswagen model range. In 2020, Volkswagen will already launch the compact, all-electric, four-door I.D. in the Golf segment, while launching the modern I.D. CROZZ in the SUV segment. In addition, the I.D. BUZZ – a re-interpretation of the legendary Volkswagen Bulli – will enter the market in 2022. All three I.D. concept cars share the new ‘all-electric architecture’ that was developed as a common platform and a completely new and avant-garde design. Other characteristics are zero-emission driving ranges up to 600 kilometres, a large amount of space, compact exterior dimensions and digitalisation of all displays and controls. In addition, the new and innovative ‘vw.OS’ operating system, which enables fast software updates and upgrades, will support each member of the I.D. family – in a way similar to the usual updating methods for smartphones.

      True to that. I want to see production models of EV. VW need to get it together

        VW aim for a high volume production of EVs.

        Teslas yearly output would take VW less then 3 days to produce..

        VW is so huge, that if they replaced their ICE modeles with pure EVs, and suppose they could use Teslas Superchargers to charge. . then after 3 years of production people would have to wait 6-12 month to charge!
        Just google the numbers here.
        That is one of the reasons things take time.
        They have to be able to make money in the process. So they need a car they can sell at a competitive price, with a quality that is competitive.
        They also have to wait for regulations and rules to be changed, and the infrastructure investments will be huge. Not just for VW, but for the electricity suppliers and the country in general.
        EU are working on a lot, regarding EVs – and they have to be finished with this, before massive production can begin.
        Close to one of the houses I have in Norway, there is a new apartment complex, where everybody has at least one EV. They have a semi fast charger for every parking spor. That was more then the local transformer station could handle. Pair that with ultra rapid electric water heaters in every appartment – you’ve got trouble.
        Who’s going to pay for that transformer station? The electric company expected the existing station to last almost 15-20 years before a larger maintenence. The housing company just wanted to make a few millions, without paying extra for infrastructure. The city that allowed this building complex did not know the limmit on the transformer station.
        VW have around 100 factories world wide, and produce 10-11 million vehicles a year.
        Imagine 30 million EVs, thats about 4600 cars for every supercharger. That gives 1/3 of a minute charging time a day for every car.

        Of course many will charge at home, and almost never ever need fast charging. It was just to give an extreme example.
        Still the volume of EVs from all the producers will cause problems somebody have to pay for.

        Fuel cell technology must also be developed. Electrifying ships is a huge task society must handle. One single container ship pollute the same as 50 000 – 250 000 ICE cars!

    Looks like they all came to Frankfurt Motor Show with dozens of empty shells.
    The real life EVs dont go there anymore – Leaf 2, Model 3, etc.
