Video: UK Taxi Firm’s Purchase Of Nissan LEAFs Examined By Science Journalist

NOV 20 2013 BY JAY COLE 4

Green taxi operator Phoenix recently bought 6 Nissan LEAFs in Northumberland to add to their 150 vehicle fleet, and science journalist Jheni Osman was there to breakdown the plug-in purchase and how well it can be integrated into normal use.

Amongst other facts according to Phoenix Taxi is that the LEAFs use about £9 ($15 USD) per week in fuel costs, while the LPG cars use about £100 ($162 USD).

Given those financial numbers alone, it is no wonder why any taxi fleet who believes the range of Nissan’s EV is sufficient to cover their needs is a runaway hit.

Couple of things to know:

  1. This video was promoted by Nissan UK – so you can imagine what the end conclusion will be
  2. This video was shot in the UK, which means it is required by law to include the phrase “ticks all the boxes” at least once during the segment

A minivan would be a lot more practical for a taxicab, I’d rather take the e-NV than try to cram myself into a Leaf. Give it 40kWh worth of battery too, to avoid expensive downtime..

“…try to cram myself into a Leaf…” Insert large American joke here?

I had a very large, tall man squeeze himself into my i-MiEV on National Plug-In Day. At around 400 lbs. and at least 6’5″ tall, he fit — barely. I doubt anyone smaller than him would have difficulty getting into a LEAF.

It does look like it ticks all the boxes though.

How do I turn on the subtitles?
