Sure, there’s a lot of positives this reviewer finds to discuss with the Model S, but it’s the negative pointed out that we don’t often hear.

Here’s an overview, via Carscoops, of what you’re in for by watching this video review:

“The Tesla Model S has captured the interest of nearly everyone and become the most-lauded alternative vehicle available. The guys climb into a loaded P85+ model to see if the S lives up to all the hype, and where it excels.”

“The reviewers (there are two of them) first begin to comment on the Model S’ interior, which they say is “all about the big screen,” and because it’s meant to draw your attention to it, the fledgling manufacturer has put less emphasis on material quality – its overall finish does not reflect is high price tag, according to the video.”

“As for handling, the reviewer says yes, the car is competent, but no it’s not an agile little sports car dressed up as a big family car.”

It’s not all words of praise for the Model S this time ’round.  Check out the video and you’ll see what we mean.

Too bad there are no commercial reviews of this car in a cold weather state such as NY or Minnesota. Its a beautiful car for southern California. But, I have heard no information that its cold weather performance has improved at all. In very cold weather is dreadful (65 miles lost overnight/ per night!).

The Consumer Reports review was an embarrassment that they didn’t even mention it, being in NY State. Of course, it was in warm weather when the review was done. But it shows the sloppiness and shallowness of these reviewers that they are all apparently not even aware of the problem..

As far as this video goes, it was mostly gushing. But the interior photos showing this car is basically a souped up Impala were educational. I’ve driven the P85, and it does have power, more than I need. But the interior of an Impala is more finished, even if there is not quite as much room.

You would think that with Norwegian sales, they would have to address the cold weather issue soon.


I’ve been chatting with a gentleman from Rochester about his Model S. He has a child at Colgate (about 130 miles away), so he makes that trip occasionally. So far the car hasn’t lost a terrible amount of range, even below freezing, although it will get much colder soon. The plus is he worked with the university to install a 20kW charger he could use for destination charging. It’s starting to seem like it’s more of a problem leaving the car unplugged overnight (so that it really cools off) rather than significant lose of driving range in the cold. But I guess we’ll learn more this winter.

Yeah that’s precisely my point. The gas tank has a leak in it in cold weather. If you drive fast its not a problem at all.

Yeah entertaining, but he didn’t say what the temperature was ( Note to southern californians: 30 degrees is HOT around here in the winter time.), and I’ve seen no actual test of the Model S’ vampire drain in 0-10 degree fahrenheit weather. Its only incidental to customer’s own reviews (as mentioned, in a commercial review I have not seen one word mentioned about it) that one finds out about the problem, and I have seen nothing indicating this special “Cold Weather Spec” addresses anything about this issue.

Living where I do, that’s the deal killer for the moment. My current Volt, and Tesla Roadster perhaps somewhat surprisingly, have very little vampire drain at cold temperatures.

The rear looks like Infinity? are you kidding me….It looks like a Jaguar XF rear.

Seriously? You call that review “negative”. It was full of glowing praise….

“Wish everything else work as well as the Model S” wasn’t enough a praise?

I would have to say all the negative part are true. (Of course, the Tesla fan club would disagree).

The weight is a downside. Comparing to a lighter sports car, it won’t corner as well. But we are talking about top 1% here. It is probably better than 99% of the cars on the road.

Interior quality can be better at $110K. The problem is that car is $70K and @ $120K, the interior is still the same.

But if that is the ONLY two issues, I would have said the Model is still the BEST car with combined driving experience and the reviewer agreed on that.

I don’t know where you get your information, but in early MN winter (down to 12*F) I have seen no overnight loss of mileage, nor have I heard of any from other Telsa owners. I do find poorer mileage while driving in the cold weather, but nearly the same as you see in gas powered cars.

Yeah actually the NY Times driver lost 65 miles when he stayed in a motel overnight during his test drive, using Tesla’s own charts…

I had theorized the loss to be 1840 watts and theorized that plugging in at 120 volts (ideally 1400 watts, in practice less) would actually decrease range.

Then a lady in Minnesota proved my theorem. Let me see if I can dig up some links.

I agree with other commenters. This isn’t a “spotless” review, but every criticism was perfectly valid. The reviewers hardly fit into the seemingly implied “EV hater” category. They said things like “I was every car was like this”. It’s hard to get more glowing in a review.

Oh, and their statement about sticking to the main roads says nothing about the car, but about the infrastructure. That will likely change rather quickly. Once Tesla installs their coast-to-coast superchargers, it’s not going to be a once-and-done deal. The network will grow as EV sales grow.
