Video: Tesla Roadster Laps the Top Gear Test Track

Back in the day, BBC’s Top Gear took a Tesla Roadster out on its test track.  In typical Top Gear fashion, the electric broke down.

We suppose it would be enlightening to post on the antics put on by Top Gear, so let’s get that out of the way now:

  • The Roadster ran out of charge and had to be pushed into the Top Gear hangar by 4 men.
  • The Roadster’s true range is only 55 miles per charge (not 211).
  • One Roadster’s motor overheated and was completely immobilized as a result.
  • The other Roadster’s brakes were broken, rendering the car undriveable.
  • That neither of the two Roadsters provided to Top Gear was available for test driving due to these problems.

While each of these statements hold a grain of truth, that’s all that’s there…a grain.

Roadster was purposely run out of charge.

Range of 55 miles was achieved when driven continuously flat out on a race track.

Motor overheated after repeated laps of the track.

Brakes overheated after several laps.

Both vehicles were available for test driving, had Top Gear not overdriven them and overheated the vital components.

You get the picture, right?

Well, finally the Tesla Roadster returns to the Top Gear test track for a second crack at setting a decent time.  Unfortunately, it’s a virtual Roadster on a virtual Top Gear track.

Tesla has since shunned Top Gear, so it’s unlikely we’ll see the automaker send them a real Roadster or Model S for testing, especially not for on-track testing.

In the virtual world, the Roadster seems to fare absolutely fine.

In related news, Top Gear USA recently tested out a Tesla Model S.  The verdict?  It’s the best thing since sliced bread.  Wonder if BBC’s Top Gear crew is jealous that its US offshoot got a crack at the Model S first?

For those a few who were wondering…

Top Gear UK can still get their paws on a privately owned Model S and do a “review”. In reality I don’t think they care much, especially if they would find it hard to make a mockery out of it.

On the show they have not reviewed the Volt/Ampera yet either. I suppose they will have a “comparo” once the German EVs, the i3, the B-class ED, and the e-Golf are all out.

Knuckle dragging douche bags.

When they did a piece on the LEAF the only point was to run out of power and then struggle to find anywhere to charge it up.

The only ‘positive’ thing they did was not mention anything about the way it drives, if they had I think they would have had to say it drives better than a similar type of ICE car. I don’t think they would have liked that so they just said nothing.

Actually I don’t believe the Roadster ran out of power. They just pretended it did.

I thought Musk had the data showing it didn’t actually run out of power and it was for theatrics?
