Video: Normal, Illinois is Not Normal – It’s EV Town USA

The town of Normal, Illinois is not normal.

EV Town USA

EV Town USA

It’s EV Town USA and for good reason, one of which is the city’s 300-plus plug-in vehicles.

Normal, Illinois (along with nearby Bloomington, Illinois) set out on a mission years ago to become the most EV-friendly place in the United States.

The two cities offer all sorts of incentives for EV purchasers, including a sales tax rebate and charging stations everywhere (the current count is at 48 Level 2 sites, one CHadeMO unit and one Tesla Supercharger location).

All of the area’s charging stations are free.

There are additional incentives in EV Town, USA, which you’ll hear of in this moving 13-plus minute video shared with us via Brad Horton through the Chevy Volt owners on Facebook.  Brad, a resident of Montrose, Illinois, says this video of Normal, Illinois makes him “so proud.”  We’re right there with you on this one Brad.

Hat tip to Brad Horton and Joe Mikulecky via Facebook!!!

48 Charging Stations? Chargepoint and Recargo.com maps only shows 12 for Normal, IL.
Maybe the 48 are a total of public and private?

Some of the charging stations are located on private property, but all are free to the public. The EVTown website has a full listing of all charging stations in Bloomington-Normal:

I think the EV’s are going to come poring into this place once the first batch of cheap Mitsubishi electric cars cars arrive.

I hope so. That is a good little car. I re calculated last night and I drive mine 1093 miles per month! Never charged with anything but 110 here at home too.

I got see a used one at a local car dealership for $18,500 I found the inside of it surprisingly roomy. What’s funny is that now do to the price drop the new one is now a few thousand cheaper new then used which is wild in the world of cars. I think I might consider getting one if it had a 80 mile an hour range though unless I saw a used one dirt cheap.

What a great story. Every small-mid town manger should read this.

Took my own advice and forwarded this to our town manager. He called back to discuss the possibilities of an EV being the next fleet vehicle. Word of mouth is still #1.

EVs are amazing fleet vehicles at around $230/mo for lease+fuel. No ICE can beat that. The only question is how predictable your range needs are, and a lot of companies and gov’ts can find good fits.

Just from the video, it looks like Federal Grant money was wisely spent. They have Eaton 30 amp chargers on cheap single phase overhead services ( a cheap 200 amp service will run 5 or 6 of them ). The Imiev being inexpensive, gives mitsu the incentive to do a discounted ‘fleet’ deal with the towns. So its a win win all the way around.

Very impressive when the entire town understands the concept and ability of electric vehicles. I wish my city was NORMAL!
