With the launch of the third-generation Smart Fortwo Electric Drive in the US now successfully underway, we thought potential buyers (or lessees) out there would want to know what to expect of Smart’s first mass-produced and soon-to-be available nationwide electric vehicle.
This is not one of those so-called compliance vehicles (read our interview with Smart USA boss Mark Webster for proof of that).
What it is though is the cheapest electric vehicle available in the US, the only one offered in convertible version (cabriolet as Smart calls it) and the US’ only EV offered in a way that you can lease the battery pack separately of the vehicle.
There’s a lot of uniqueness here, that’s for sure. But if it’s not a joy to drive, then why should we care?
Yes, it is the cheapest EV in the States and that’s a bonus, but if cheap equates to bad, then we certainly wouldn’t be interested in owning one. However, here cheap only relates to its price tag, as the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive can hold its own against any other EV in its segment.
