BMW has released the second video in a multi-video series showing the i3’s on-track prowess.

BMW i3 Takes Its First “Hot Lap”

The video builds upon the first-ever i3 hot lap by teasing us even more, but this time there’s a fair amount of conversation between Erin Crocker and Chris Neff, who both get formally introduced to us by BMW.

As BMW states:

“Watch a champion race-car driver put the BMW i3 to the test, as she demonstrates techniques to meet everyday driving challenges. Her passenger, an EV Owner, is in for the ride of his life.”

Soon, the entire video series will be released and, as you might expect, InsideEVs expects to have the exclusive stories from both the driver (Erin Crocker – NASCAR racer, sprint driver and stunt driver) and the passenger (InsideEVs’ own Chris Neff).

“The trick for street driving..”… “This vehicle is legitimate!”… “it does drive like an ultimate driving machine.” “…yeah, around town it’s perfect!”. “…great for avoiding potholes…” ….”Have you ever driven an electric car before?” “No, I haven’t”. All of this about regen braking and instant torque can be said for nearly every electric car ever produced. Interesting aspects of an ad like this – using rock music to add excitement, and observations from someone new to driving an electric car. It’s not showing i3 is a track monster or even more agile than say, a LEAF or Volt. It is saying it’s deceptively quick and perhaps agile at street/city speeds. With the effects of this ad, BMW is conveying that i3 is a little Mini Cooper John Cooper Edition, or some kind of barnstorming little rocket. IT AINT. I always come on here with a little reality when we post these articles waving the BMW flag, because I feel folks just give BMW a big performance nod just because they are BMW. With my limited videographer abilities ( I was really into making videos
in the nineties ), and my outdated semi-pro Canon video camera, I could
whip up a video with a 1960s VW Beetle tin can, with overdubbed rock
music and quick takes of the car sliding around corners, and if you didn’t
know exactly what a VW Beetle was, and how lame it’s driving dynamics
were, you might think – “Gee, this VW Bug is really sporty!”….

Give me a day and a Beetle, and some YouTube space, and I might leave
young folks who never knew the Beetle, thinking – ” Wow, that Bug was
a sporty little tart!”…HA HA!

Realities of physics mean that a relatively heavy, tall city car with
very skinny tires does not a performance car make. So why all
the hype pre-introduction here – of these images to convey the
car is more than what it really is?

Could it be that it’s gonna set people back $50,000+?

Only a couple years back, I had to laugh when a major American auto magazine tested the latest M5 and noted that it strangely had a very large flaw with what I believe was a cooling hose. They noted it was highly “un-BMW-like” to let the car out the door with a major cooling problem. Funny was that the notation was buried under paragraph after paragraph of flattery and gushing over how fast and exciting the car was! Many have noted auto publications, “BMW Rule” in which they even place the BMW competitor in a shootout above cars that outperformed it in several key areas because – well – “IT’S A BMW”. Sometimes the 3 Series is idolized and placed on some pedestal as if it were an automotive god that has to be constantly heralded. Meanwhile, BMW owners, seemingly also caught in the trance ( an expensive trance, albeit ) drive like numnuts on public roads without professional racing experience, endangering our families. James, I think the point of the video is to show that this city car can be fun too and it has some sportiness to it. Brand aside, It handles better than you would expect, it is not top heavy nor is it heavy. The reviews that are out already are impressive.

I’ve driven many EVs, I have an ActiveE which I love but this i3 is worlds ahead.. Regardless of the badge on the hood (or frunk) this is an impressive EV and kudos to BMW for filming it on a track with a race car driver….Erin never drove an EV before that day and she was impressed as well, regardless of the brand.

Did you disregard all my comments? Remember the first time you drove an EV? You’re probably not a race car driver, and yet you were impressed by the instant torque and silent, smooth ride weren’t you? You disregard the clever cuts, and hyped pace of this video suggesting this car is somehow sporty. I’ve owned cars ( Honda Prelude, First Gen comes to mind ) that had sporty looks but really were a soft econobox underneath. NHTSA and the insurance institute used to quote such cars as the most deadly on our roads. Why? Well, like in the case of the much-hated but big-selling Mustang II back in the days before you were born, it was one of those cars that people drove aggressively because IT WAS A MUSTANG, AFTER ALL, but underneath was closer to a Pinto! Many died in that car. My Prelude was also such a car. Add that i8 is not SPORTY looking in any stretch of the word. It’s tall, boxy and a bit weirdo…Not many say it’s attractive…but there’s no excuse for taste. Watch closely. The car is not going that fast. I was truly skeptical before that day, but afterwards I came away really liking it, if it can do that on the track then on the streets it will be fantastic.

No one is claiming it is a race car, the message is it still has BMW DNA. Like it or not, it is one of the better driving (all around) EVs.

I love cars, all kinds, especially EVs, I’ve driven the LEAF, Model S 85+, Roadster, eBox, SmartED, ActiveE, Fit EV to name some so I have many to compare it to. A LEAF is an excellent choice and the i3 is not for everyone, price, brand or style wise, but don’t take away from what it can do until you drive it. If you like the way your LEAF drives you will really like the i3…just try one if you get the chance.

James, I think you might not be up to date in your facts here. I have a 2013 Mini Cooper S. I drove the i3 two days in a row at the Los Angeles event. I accidentally made a wrong turn, and had to make a U-turn. Boy was I surprised at how quick and agile the thing was in instantly making a U-turn. It felt like a go kart! And no, the Mini simply can’t replicate the same kind of feeling.

Also, most of the popular car publications such as Car And Driver have been pretty much pro-Audi in all the comparison tests. The BMW may be quicker, have better fuel economy, etc…but they seem to lose all the comparison shoot outs. The M5, and 335i, are just some of the examples of great performing BMWs losing their comparison tests. It’s almost as though these publications are actually anti-BMW lately.

Again, Elroy, you speak of automobiles and tall X-wagons that average
about 20 miles per gallon of gas.

Since this is an EV website, and that kind of efficiency really isn’t considered
efficient here…I’d save my comments for possibly a EURO ICE car fansite?
