UQM Technologies Teams With Kinetics Drive Solutions On Multi-Speed Electric Commercial Vehicles

APR 24 2014 BY MARK KANE 2

UQM Technologies and Kinetics Drive Solutions announced collaboration on electric drive systems for all-electric commercial vehicles such as trucks or buses.

UQM Technologies, as a motor manufacturer, will supply its PowerPhase HD family of electric motors and controllers, while Kinetics Drive Solutions will supply its three-speed transmission EV3-850.

“Key advantages for customers will be a fully integrated and calibrated system that allows quicker speed to market and reduced development time and cost, as well as fewer engineering variables. Systems will feature UQM PowerPhase HD® electric motors and controllers combined with Kinetics NexDrive™ transmissions.”

The PowerPhase HD family of motors includes HD 220 with 700 Nm of peak torque and 220 kW of peak power, HD 950T with 950 Nm of torque and 140 kW of peak power and the HD 250 which is a high-voltage variant with 250 kW of peak power and 900 Nm of torque.

On the NexDrive EV3-850 transmission side we see:

“The NexDrive EV3-850 transmission is a 3-speed dual-clutch transmission that efficiently works with the electric motor to minimize torque interruption during gear shifting. It also enables the electric motor to operate at peak or near peak efficiency for superior battery performance and vehicle range. The EV3-850 has been designed and developed by Kinetics specifically for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicle applications.”

Eric R. Ridenour, President and Chief Executive Officer of UQM Technologies Inc., stated:

“As we work with multiple partners in China and other regions of the world, it has become clear that for some the ability to offer a complete system will be a competitive advantage. By collaborating with Kinetics we are able to offer those customers a proven powertrain system. The combined strengths of our systems, our combined marketing power and our recent ISO/TS 16949 registration will expand our reach in these important markets.”

well, that going to cost a pretty penny.

Thus, I believe the commercial marketing angle makes the most sense, indeed.

The 3 speed tranny surely needs a proving ground for reliability and what better one than this?

Remember when Tesla struggled mightily with big name transmission supplier after big name transmission supplier and none could provide a gearchanger that would stand the massive torque.

My fantasy is a Sprinter van or that new, interesting large Ford Transit with a rack of Tesla batteries underneath. This combo in there would be perfect to maximize range.
