U.S. Federal Transit Administration Offers Up $55 Million To Get More Zero Emission Buses On The Road

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced a set of 10 electric bus projects, which will get grants of almost $55 million total for implementation.

Those 10 projects were selected from 50 propositions (total $200 million):

“Funding is provided through FTA’s Low or No Emission Vehicle Deployment Program (LoNo). “

“Priority was given to proposals that funded the incremental difference between a standard bus and a LoNo vehicle as a way to stretch procurement dollars farther; incorporated the highest level of U.S.-made content; and demonstrated a long-term commitment to expanding green energy bus fleets.”

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx stated:

“The Obama Administration is committed to investing in 21st century transportation solutions like these zero emission buses. These innovative, energy-efficient buses will help increase efficiency, improve air quality and reduce our nation’s dependence on oil.”

FTA Senior Advisor Carolyn Flowers commented:

“As the nation’s population and transit ridership continue to rise, we must invest in innovative technologies that will help transit agencies like TARC expand their bus fleets and bring a new generation of energy-efficient buses to Louisville and cities and towns nationwide. These grant awards will also help create new jobs and support a growing industry of domestic manufacturers who are developing advanced technologies to power public transportation for the future.”

Here is the table with 10 projects. 5 of them are for a total of 28 Proterra electric buses, one for five 60-foot articulated New Flyer battery-electric buses, two projects are for a total of 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses, one project is for 17 hybrid buses and one for building one additional fast charging station for an existing fleet of electric buses.

Striking to us is that the average value of grants for fuel cell buses is almost two times higher than in the case of battery-electric buses – nearly $1.9 million per vehicle compared to about $1 million (including fast charging stations). So, literally you could buy twice the amount of BEVs than FCVs for the same amount of cash.

KYLexingtonLextran, Transit Authority of the Lexington Fayette Urban County GovernmentLextran, the transit authority in Lexington, Kentucky, will receive funding to purchase five Proterra battery-electric buses, one charging station and one maintenance area charging system. The zero-emission buses will replace five diesel buses that are at the end of their useful life. Lextran plans to develop a centrally charged and operated system of electric buses running out of the downtown transit center, which serves the majority of city bus routes.$ 6,003,534.00
KYLouisvilleTransit Authority of River City (TARC)The Transit Authority of River City (TARC), the transit agency for Louisville, Kentucky, and southern Indiana, will receive funding to deploy five Proterra battery-electric buses and a fast charging station. The zero-emission buses will increase TARC’s fleet of battery-electric buses, and the charger will work with TARC’s existing chargers to expand the area that the battery-electric buses serve.$ 3,321,250.00
MAWorcesterWorcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA)The Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA), the transit provider in Central Massachusetts, will receive funding to purchase and install a Proterra charging station for its existing fleet of zero-emission battery-electric buses. The charging station has emergency power generation capability, providing power to the electric bus fleet during power outages.$ 1,002,600.00
MABostonMassachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA)The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in Boston will receive funding to develop and deploy five 60-foot articulated New Flyer battery-electric buses on the MBTA Silver Line Bus Rapid Transit System. The new zero-emission buses will have improved performance on ice and snow-covered roads.$ 4,139,188.00
MNDuluthThe Duluth Transit Authority (DTA)The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) will receive funding to purchase and deploy six Proterra Fast Charge Electric buses, two charging stations and a maintenance facility charger. DTA will use these new, zero-emission electric buses to replace some of the oldest diesel buses in its fleet. DTA provides approximately 3 million rides per year throughout St. Louis County in northeast Minnesota.$ 6,343,890.00
OHCantonStark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA)The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) will receive funding to purchase and deploy five hydrogen fuel cell buses from the Integrated Product Team of Ballard Power Systems, BAE Systems, and ElDorado National. The agency will use the new zero-emission buses in a variety of operating conditions, including congested downtown streets, major urban roads and rural highways. SARTA provides more than 2.7 million rides per year throughout Stark County, Ohio.$ 8,877,405.00
PALancasterRed Rose Transit Authority (RRTA)The Red Rose Transit Authority (RRTA) in Lancaster, PA, will receive funding to purchase 17 electric hybrid buses to replace current diesel buses that are at the end of their useful life. The new, low emission buses will be manufactured by BAE Systems and Gillig. Fourteen buses will go to RRTA, and three will go to the Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority, which is being managed by RRTA. The two agencies serve Berks and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania.$ 2,638,400.00
TXDallasDallas Area Rapid Transit Authority (DART)The Dallas Area Rapid Transit Authority (DART) will receive funding to purchase and operate seven all-electric Proterra buses. DART will operate the fast charge, zero-emission buses on its downtown circulator service, D-Link. The circulator serves the city’s central business district, the Uptown area and historic Oak Cliff neighborhoods.$ 7,637,111.00
TOTAL$54,469,249.00

Awesome news… the less soot belching, asthma causing, diesels on our roads the better. Now if someone could make an electric hybrid semi truck that could recharge while waiting at ports, docks and truck stops. Maybe even with an overhead wire for going down the road on batteries and electric motors.

I wounder would this be good for streetcars to and not only buses?

I’m not a terribly big fan of buses. My exception of this would be Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) where the buses have their own right of way. In that particular scenario, an electric bus would be perfect, particularly where it might be difficult to install overhead catenary.

Streetcars are awesome. They should bring them back. And airships.

That’s funny, SJRTDs electric buses have been AWOL for awhile now. I’m surprised they’re still pursuing this.

I’m planning to promote the LA area made BYD buses that Stanford will soon have twenty three of..

..especially their new BRT articulated model is the way to go!
