Demand Is Said To Be High For The Tesla Model S Convertible By NCE

It is about time to check in with Newport Convertible Engineering and their Tesla Model S convertible conversion product.

Three months ago, the company announced they would be taking a consumers ‘standard’ Model S and turning it into a 4-door convertible – well, for a price anyway.

  • Ragtop conversion priced at $29,000
  • Hard tonneau cover conversion priced at $49,000

At the time the company said work on the convertibles would begin in July, and true to their word the videos here prove that is true.

The above video is the initial status report from the company from about 5 weeks ago, with the second and third video (below) the latest updates.

In addition to the 4-door convertible Model S, NCE has announced they will also convert the Tesla into both a 2-door coupe and 2-door coupe convertible.

  • Tesla Model S Coupe, Price for conversion is set for $35,000
  • Tesla Model S 2 door convertible (soft boot), additional Price for conversion is set for $25,000
  • Tesla Model S 2 door convertible (hard boot), additional Price for conversion is set for $45,000

According to the company, they have a large China-based order in hand for each type of conversion up first to be delivered; 100 of the 4-door convertible, 100 of the 2-door convertible and 100 of the coupe.

At one point the company was in negotiations to purchase 5,000 donor Model S sedans directly from Tesla, but that didn’t go so well.

“Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) was told that due to the present strain in production of Tesla Model S, Tesla Motors will not be able to provide 5000 units exclusively to NCE. NCE is encouraging its clients to order Tesla Model S directly from Tesla Motors as soon as possible and have their vehicles shipped to NCE’s headquarters in Huntington Beach, CA; or any of NCE’s branches in Barcelona, Spain and Dubai, UAE.”

As well as filling demand for the standard 4-door convertible, NCE plans on building 600 of both the 2-door coupe and convertible.

I will be curious to see what the trunk space looks like w/the top down.

4 door convertible? I’ll bet the chassis wobbles like jello. As an owner of several convertibles, I’ll stick with the sunroof…,

Taser54

Engineering-wise, I’d certainly trust a factory-built convertible over a retrofit.

Anon

Who is providing updated graphics to represent the new physical configuration of the vehicle, within the Tesla GUI???

Chris O

Nasty….that future 2 door conversion looks pretty good though even though it would most likely handle like an early Saab convertible.

Maybe they can base it on a factory coupe some day?

Despite the one recent fatality, Tesla has a wonderful story to tell about safety and accident survival rates.

I am curious if they are happy about these conversions and what it might do to their reputation.

Chris O

There was no fatality, just a thief who got critically injured after being ejected from the vehicle (buckle up…)but yes, cutting the car up like that is not going to help the odds. Since its no factory vehicle any safety consequences don’t count for Tesla’s record though.

Rob Stark

Tesla thief was only mostly dead.

He was revived by paramedics.

Still no permanent deaths while driving in a Model S. Despite not wearing seat belt.

Steven

Yeah, mostly dead is still slightly alive… With all dead all you can do is go through their pockets for loose change…

Electric Ray

I’m still waiting for someone to convert a Tesla to an ICE vehicle.

So the owner of this one paid extra for the Panoramic Sunroof than a lot more to have it cut out and turned into a convertible.
Doh!

Otherwise known as having “more money than sense”.
