Hino Motor, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, hit the stage in Tokyo with what’s sure to be Toyota’s largest, heaviest plug-in hybrid and a whole slew of other electrified offerings (as well as some other unique stuff).

At the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese company showed off its Melpha Plug-In Hybrid bus, equipped with external power supply function. For purposes of demonstration, Hino built a “mobile health clinic” version.

As with most PHEVs, the Melpha Plug-In Hybrid has lithium-ion battery pack that enables short-distance city travel in EV mode (we believe 40 km or so) and then the diesel engine starts if needed. But the coolest thing is that it can serve as an emergency power source via CHAdeMO – providing up to 30 hours of light to a gymnasium using a full tank of diesel 100L or until the end of the world if used just to light a home.

“We have combined a high capacity lithium-ion battery with the hybrid systems we have cultivated over the years to create a plug-in hybrid bus that can be charged externally. It can run on EV drive mode in urban areas and for short-distance travel and on hybrid drive mode for long-distance travel and climbing. The external power supply function also allows the vehicle to supply power to shelters, etc. in the event of a disaster. The exhibition vehicle is a “mobile health clinic” which, under normal circumstances, functions as a clinic contributing to community medical care. It can also serve as an emergency power source, particularly during times of disaster. The vehicle can be refueled to provide continuous power for long periods of time – with a full tank of diesel (100L), this vehicle can supply enough power to light a gymnasium for around 30 hours.”

At the Tokyo Motor Show, we also saw the world premier of a concept fully-electric bus – HINO Poncho Mini. This small sized EV also has a CHAdeMO inlet, just behind the logo like in the Nissan LEAF.

“This vehicle’s compact body gives it the agility to maneuver through the city. It runs silently on an electric motor, producing zero emissions. Its front-wheel drive system is powered by a compact powertrain unique to EVs and a flat, ultra-low floor has been realized by housing the battery under the floor. Boarding is easy, even with a wheelchair or stroller, and the vehicle can easily store a large volume of luggage.”

There where some Hino hybrids on display and a 1:1 scale model called “Light-duty commercial EV platform:”

“This is the full-size model built on the light-duty commercial EV platform which is also the base for the HINO Poncho Mini.
You can experience the front-wheel drive system powered by a compact powertrain and the ultra-low-floor layout which has been realized by housing the battery under the floor.”

As I wrote elsewhere… the flaming anti-EV rhetoric from its CEO is but a distraction.

On the ground where things get built, Toyota is EV-hedging, not EV-hostile.

I’d like to know more about the transmission in this hybrid bus. You can’t just scale up a Prius HSD and make it work for big apps like this.

If Hino uses the same hybrid system on its bus that it uses on its hybrid truck, then it’s not HSD.

Thx for the link. That’s a pretty simple system, Just pancake the motor between the engine and tranny.

Oh and PS. I heard on the GM-Volt blog yesterday from Charlie H that Ford and Toyota are no longer jointly developing a Hybrid F150 type truck.

Just googled it. It’s old news from last summer. Ford is doing it on their own expects a hybrid truck by 2019….why does it take so long?

I wonder how much of this is a reaction to the tsunamis.
