Toyota today reported it has achieved an impressive milestone. So far this year through the end of April, the company has sold 4 million hybrid vehicles worldwide.
Toyota currently sells 18 hybrid passenger vehicles in 80 countries and regions around the world. Their first hybrid, the Prius originally went on sale in Japan in 1997 and in the US in 2000. They note the Prius accounts for half of all hybrids on US roads, and so far the company has sold 1.5 million of them here.
This year the brand has been expanded to include the smaller lower cost Prius-c the utility sized Prius-v, and the plug-in Prius. The plug-in Prius is so far this year the best selling plug-in vehicle in the US.
“All of us at Toyota would like to sincerely thank our customers, who have made Prius the best-selling hybrid in the industry,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “While we’re proud of this accomplishment, we are not stopping here as hybrids will continue to be a core technology for Toyota.”
Toyota calculates that the total number of its hybrid vehicles sold globally since 1997 have produced to approximately 26 million fewer tons of C02 emissions than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance.
