Tesla’s Newest Referral Prize Includes Semi Race Competition

Tesla Semi

APR 20 2018 BY DOMENICK YONEY 9

Ladies and gentlemen, start your referral engines!

Would you like to race the Tesla Semi? Of course you would. You have a pulse, right? Well, if you happen to be a Tesla owner, you may be able to earn that opportunity via the automaker’s referral program.

****UPDATE – April 20 – Though Tesla’s current referral program is still active through the end of this month, the automaker has already released details on the next referral round. Here are those details:

Race an Electric Semi Truck

One winner each week will get to race a giant electric semi truck around our test track. There will be additional prizes and trophies for the best track times. Each friend who signs up for our newsletter through your referral link gets each of you an entry. Owners can track their entries and the leaderboard in the Tesla App.

Tesla owners get a referral code when they purchase their vehicle, and when another person uses that code while buying a Tesla for themselves, good things happen. For instance, the referral program, as it is now formulated, rewards the first five buyers for using the existing owner’s code by giving them free, unlimited Supercharging. The very first user of an existing owner’s referral code additionally gets a “$500 credit toward service or accessories.”

There are some owners who can convince a number of others to use their particular referral code when buying a Tesla, and when they do, even better things happen (we’ll get to the racing-the-Semi part soon, we promise). One or two referrals, and you get to choose between a Signature Black Wall Connector or a Tesla Model S for Kids. From there, the rewards just pile up.

A third referral lands you a choice of custom 21- or 22-inch custom wheels, or a week-long loan of a new Model S or X for yourself or a friend. Four qualifying referrals allows you to add a Powerwall2 to your growing heap of prizes. Five, and you get an invitation to the next big Tesla unveiling event — suspected to be the Model Y reveal — or a Solar Roof “token,” which gives you (or someone you gift it to) “priority scheduling” for a solar installation.

Ok, now the electric Semi truck-racing part: If you, a Tesla owner, get people to use your referral code to sign up for Tesla’s newsletter, then you get an entry into a weekly drawing to race the recently-revealed big electric rig around the test track at the company’s Fremont facilities. Five friends sign up? That’s five chances to win. And your fiends also get a chance each. Sweet, yes? (Yes!)

If you do manage to get yourself in that coveted position behind that heavy hauler’s steering wheel, make sure to give ‘er (as they say in the Canadian Maritime provinces). According to the automaker, “There will be additional prizes and trophies for the best track times.

While we mull the best way to also get ourselves some Semi track time (purely for the purposes of journalism, of course), feel free to peruse all the referral program details below. There are also rewards for Solar Roof referrers.

Too bad they won’t let you take it to your local drag strip to see how it would do against some muscle cars. I am sure it would be a pretty big blow to the ego to have your early 70s big block smoked by an electric semi

HVACman

re: racing semis at the drag strip

Peterbilt used to have their main assembly plant in Newark, CA, just a few miles from Tesla’s Fremont plant. There also used to be a drag strip right across the freeway from the Tesla plant. A classmate of mine who worked at Peterbilt said they did their truck testing at the drag strip. That had to be fun! Too bad that drag strip is gone now…along with the drive in movie theater, the glider port, the farms and ranches….

HVACman

The problem would be making it to the finish with your dignity intact. The semi would smoke anyone off the line and for the first 1/8th mile, but the electric motors red-line at about 80 mph and the speed limiter would shut you down way before you got to the quarter.

Robert Weekley

Dang! ??

OK! 1/8th mile races it is then! ?

Jacked Beanstalk

Speed limiter? Pfffft! Any moderately capable hacker could crack the firmware and patch it with a speed BOOSTA!

David

Why not a free flamethrower? Makes about as much sense as racing a semi!

Bill Howland

I think the only finalists allowed are:

1). Those who have purchased ‘flamethrowers’,

2). The soon to be announced ‘Nail Shooters’ (the next toy Tesla will introduce. Of course Shooting a nail into a (former) friend’s Head may be looked upon by Prudish people as dangerous – but more and more people are suicidal anyway so you’d be doing them a favor).

3). Put an entry into the former “Rust-O-Loop” trial.

(Tesla only wants Innovative customers that will further the Technology of high speed, long distance (e.g. 55 mph for 50 meters prior to stalling by the WINNING entry).

(We won’t call it CLEAN Technology at this point since the entrants were all smothered in dust. Since this FINE 1 km long test tube (Painted ‘O’-rings et al) is rusting inside and out at an accelerated rate, Tesla wants applications sooner rather than later).

Robert Weekley

What? It’s not an Inconel Tube? It’s gotta handle Flame Throwers, and Flaming Posts, like Bills, so it’s gotta handle the heat! ?

“Would you like to race the Tesla Semi? Of course you would.” I would just as soon drive a go-kart. they’d have about the same maneuverability.

I’d much, much rather race an electrified version of my own vehicle. I have a better chance at that to boot.
