Tesla To Make Charging Connectors For China’s Charging Standard

Tesla says that it’s working on a connector to make both the Model S and X compatible with the charging standards in China.

Tom Zhu, Tesla’s China country manager, stated:

“The converters will help our sales by reducing preliminary concerns in China. It marks an important milestone in Tesla’s development in China.”

The connectors will allow Tesla to charge at the nation’s various state-owned charging points. Currently, Teslas are limited to in-home charging, Supercharging and some destination charging points in China, but this new adapter will allow the cars to hook up to public charging points.

China’s charging standards are different than the U.S. and Europe. China uses what’s known as the GB/T DC standard (more details here).

For Tesla, this move to make sue of China’s standard is some two years behind the automaker’s initial promised date.

As a Tesla Inc. fan, I’m shocked that Tesla hasn’t already started making and selling these in China. Is something more than a simple adapter needed? Does it need to have a two-way connection with the charger?

If not, then what’s the reason for the delay? China announced their non-standard charging “standard” several months ago, as I recall.

The overall process could simply be more involved than it appears on the surface. Especially if validation bureaucracies are involved!

The comments on the link given seem to have several people insulted that China would come up with a third standard.

In view of the being both the largest EV market and vehicle market in general in the world, it seems that China will be setting the most popular standards by now, just by default.

Profitability will cause every other company to fall into alignment with China.

No room for China’s Johnny come lately standard I’m afraid.

China does not consider main advantage: CSS/Tesla has the single charging protocol and shared hardware between J1772 and SAE connectors. Tesla even has the same single connector for DC and AC! vs China/Japan 2 different protocols and hardware.
