China to Get Tesla Superchargers Too

According to Tesla, a free Supercharger network is planned for China, though specific details are lacking at this time.

Tesla does say that it’s in the process of ensuring that it can install the Superchargers in China, but the automaker is not yet sure when the first ones will be in the ground.

Diarmuid O’Connell, Tesla’s vice president of corporate and business development, stated:

“We’re beginning to speak with the folks [property owners and electricity providers] that we need to speak with.”

“Every market has its peculiarities…We have a lot of experience with the heterogeneity of the problem.”

Tesla currently has a showroom and service center in Beijing.  Next in the plans is for Shanghai to get a showroom and service center.  Beyond that, Tesla hopes to “get broad distribution” in China, says O’Connell.

As to China’s desire to have a strong home market manufacturing and selling EVs,  Mr. O’Connell says Tesla is no threat to that deam.

“I completely respect the desire of the national, provincial and city governments to support local manufacturers and to get a domestic industry going and if that’s in EVs then all the better.”

Finally, O’Connell says there’s been “tremendous” response in China from a “progressive cadre of folks who are making reservations sight unseen, pricing unknown.”

Paris to bejing would be a cool roadtripp 😉

I’ll prefer the hyperloop for that…

On google street view it is possible to drive from Germany to the middle of Asia on paved roads but I think that would become a possibility when Tesla builds a Russian super charger network. But as of now I think it would be cool to drive between Bejing to Paris expect the only thing blocking it would be politically in terms of counties being at war with one another or a county being to dangerous.

On google street view… 😉 Haha… Well, you can go on that road trip but I would recommend buying an old used car in Russia instead of bringing a Tesla 😛

Most russians live in western russia and if they really build a super charger network in russia you might get to mid russia when it’s well expanded.

Them building a network all the way through eastern russia to China is as likely (or even less likely) that they will build a super charger network in northern Canada where the populations density is comparable. 😛

And if you take the rout over Mongolia, then skip the car and buy a horse instead…that will take you further 😉 (not kidding…)

With the size of China and how the population is distributed it should be easy enough to build a network covering most of the population with less superchargers than in Europe or the US and then letting sales and demand decide where to expand.

But it will be interesting to see how they manage the local culture, permits and keeping stability in their super chargers with the infrastructure avaliable. A whole lot of other problems than in Europe/US.

China maybe the perfect site to install Tesla’s electricity storage/smart grid units.

It most definitely will be.
