Tesla To Expand Solar Production At Gigafactory 2 Regardless Of Tariff

MAR 14 2018 BY MARK KANE 13

The recently announced new 30% tax tariff on imported solar systems in U.S. shook the solar market a little bit as there are a lot of imported solar cells.

Tesla, who began local production of its solar products at the Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, New York (in partnership with Panasonic) shouldn’t be affected much by the tax. Even if there’s a need to import part of the cells (for panels or Solar Roof), the first 2.5 GW imported is tax-free anyways.

This should give U.S. solar system manufacturers some advantage over competitors, though it’s unclear how much of an advantage will be realized.

Regardless, Tesla reaffirmed it intentions to expand the production facility.

“Tesla is committed to expanding its domestic manufacturing, including Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, New York, regardless of the solar tariff decision.”

Why would Tesla be penalized by the tariffs when the panels are made in Buffalo?

Micke Larsson

When they import the cells for the solar panels it’s affected by tariffs.

Just like for the cars where the battery cells are almost all imported.

They announced 3 months ago they would be making cells there too:

“Tesla Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, New York has been engaged in production of solar modules since this past summer, but just now we’re learning that production of solar cells for the modules, as well as for the Solar Roofs, is set to commence soon (in the coming months).”

The cells used in the panels are not made at the factory yet, as far as I know.
Hopefully cell production starts soon

The prices have dropped so much over the years this is just a slip and like moves the needle only back several months. ie. nothing. See graphic URL. “2017, All Over Again: The Impact of Trump’s Solar Tariff” via WC blog.

would be good a tax to the imported oil like a 30% like to solar cells.
but the oil lobby is so strong ,control the congres
dont pass for the mind of the goverment
but to tax clean energy seems is not problem

That tax will, in the end, be a tax on many things you buy not just gas. Be careful what you wish for!

more expensive is a cancer due to polluted air and die
be careful what you wish for !

More expensive is the food you won’t be able to afford and die before the cancer…be careful what you wish for!

I too thought they were manufacturing solar cells there, but apparently not. Just assembling cells provided by Panasonic. I still think they are planning on manufacturing cells there, unless someone knows different?

Nix

It looks like they plan on finishing their plans to build cells in Buffalo before they hit 2.5 GW worth of imports.
