Tesla Supercharging Milestone For June: More Than 1 GWh Delivered To Model S EVs

More than 1 GWh of energy is the new bold number for the Tesla Supercharging network in June. This is what the fleet of Tesla Model S EVs around the world used in June alone.

This is enough to move Tesla Model S for 3.7 million miles.

From the start, we now know that Superchargers delivered energy for 24.7 million miles!

“In June, Tesla’s Supercharger network passed a charging milestone, delivering more than 1 GWh of energy to Model S vehicles in a single month. That energy accounts for a collective 3.7 million miles driven, 168,000 gallons of gas saved, and 4.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide offset. That’s like driving to the moon and back seven and a half times, and nixing a day’s worth of CO2 from 73,684 Americans.”

In Tesla’s opinion, Supercharging network is now the largest fast-charging network with over 100 stations in the US, 32 in Europe and 3 in China. Of course, there are still much more CHAdeMOs (near 4,000), but they are not a uniform network.

Moreover, Tesla stated that Superchargers are growing faster than other networks, and that 8 units were delivered last week alone in Europe (some of them were temporary units however, so in fact installation is still ahead for Tesla).

“Tesla’s Supercharger network is now the largest fast-charging network on the planet. It’s also the world’s fastest-growing charging network.”

“At a Supercharger, Model S customers can get half a charge in as little as 20 minutes, and it’s totally free. Supercharger routes now span the entire width of the United States, from Los Angeles to New York, as well as up and down the East Coast and the West Coast. By the end of next year, 98 percent of the U.S. population will be within 100 miles of a Supercharger. We are also aggressively expanding the network in Europe and Asia. Last week alone, we opened eight new Supercharging sites in Europe, bringing the total number of stations on the continent to 32. We unveiled China’s first Superchargers in June and more are coming soon.”

“You can find a Model S charging at a Supercharger any given second of the day, and to date Superchargers have powered a total of 24.7 million miles of driving – which means the world has been spared the burning of 1.1 million gallons of gasoline.”

1GWh is one month’s consumption, it should be about 1 in 330,000. Point taken though.

The nerd in you should know that it’s 1,21 GW not 1.21 GWh. 😉

So for 1,21 GW there would need to be at least 3000 supercharger stations. And that is for installed effect, so it would take a lot more to actually get the superchargers to use 1.21 GW at a given moment (for example 20 167 cars charging at the same time at 60 kW on average).

At maybe 12c/kWh, they paid $120,000 for that energy, or about $3 per car for June.

Even if it rises to $50/yr per car, they’ll be fine providing free supercharger miles for life.

And they probably don’t even pay such retail rates. They probably get cheaper rates.

They get cheaper rates in some states if they go as a Industrial customer.

I’ve seen set up were power will be $0.10 cents a kilowatt but if you are a Industrial customer you get $0.05 cents a kilowatt.

Glad Tesla put full effort into the global SC buildout, and didn’t get distracted by battery swap stations.

+1. Battery Swapping is 100% unnecessary when a 20 minute charge can get you 100+ miles driving range.

Battery Swap is only needed for a little press attention and persuasion of the hold out naysayers on EV charging due to the lack of their understanding and single track mind that compares everything to gasoline.

They could still build a battery swap station or two in the most bushy areas and see how it works. In that it won’t sink them like it did to better place which put all eggs into one basket. Also Tesla has produced far more cars then better place’s supporters were able to build.

They should offer battery swap for fleet. Make more sense than for final users.

Don’t worry. Battery swap stations will be available on the west and east coasts by the end of 2013.

It’s a Herculean task electrifying transportation worldwide. Tesla is certainly leading the charge so to speak.

Well, I guess that answers my question as to whether the SCs are actually being used regularly…wow…that’s a lot of juice.

The Super Chargers are good for the power grid in that they create new demand for power in a world were power demand is declining due to solar power.

I think though Tesla might start putting in supplemental solar panels and battery systems when they get their Giga solar panel factory running and Giga battery factory up. In that right now Tesla and Solar City need every battery and solar panel they get a hold of to sell for their customers.
